Dell dimension 8300.Came with a 9800 xt graphic card flat panel monitor 1 gb ram and 80 GiG hardrive. Now it was quiet at first n then i added 1 gb more ram. After a while it slowly started becoming louder. Now its so loud that its almost like a car in your room... anyone know how to fix it? like is it the wires or the fan or maybe the ram added thats making its fan / system to go crazy n cause so much noise?

my computer is super loud too
but cause i have a fairly warm room without airconditioning so i am loaded down with fans to keep my computer at room temperature(cant get it lower than that of course)
your problems could be as simple as a ball bearing in one of your fans has gone bad and simply has grown louder
best way to test your fans id say is stop the fan somehow(good luck) and see if one specific fan is causing the noise

Probably a bad fan yes. Check them, especially the less-important ones as those are the most likely to be cheap ass pieces of crap. ><

Amusingly enough, I actually had a fan lose blades while operating once... Little bits of plastic everywhere, and I had to take the PC down until I could get it replaced because of the severe vibration. :O

MY alienware go rawring when my room is hot and heat is on XD

but overall if my room is warm-cold, my computer is like slience :P

Normally I wouldn't give a shit about you WSM but I just want to give you a eneral warning about Dell computers so that you don't end up blowing out your wallet on a 'fix' to find you have voided your warenty and destroyed your comuter.

Dell Computer Fan and Power Headers/Pin arrays, are NOT standard.

In each computer there are what we call 'rails' each rail is responsable for a ground or voltage, in Dells, the power supply is made by Dell, and used only on Dells If you plug in a standard Power Supply into a Dell computer you end up grounding some of the rails on your Power Supply, and injecting 12v into your 3.3v rail asn your 5v rail...

Fan Headers are not standard Fans in Del computers swap the Ground and the monitor wires, so that if you use a normal fan in a Dell you will send 12v to your motherboard periferal control and monitorign chip frying it.

Those are my warnings, I use to be a tech, and Dells were a nightmare cause they pulled this shit all the time. They may have since changed thier policies, however I highly doubt it....

In general if you want to quiet your PC, use headphones or build your own computer. My old AutoCAD rig use to ring in at a Whopping ~85dB(heavy Freeway traffic) under peak load. I designed a custom cooling kit for it and it now operates at the same temp, @ a mere ~15-20dB (A Human Whisper).

Dells are Nice, but the company preys on the less knowledgable customer base...

if you have a bad fan, just take it off, keep the case off, and when the computer is on check the heat sink and make sure it doesn't get too hot. If it's cool you are fine without a new fan. But if not you should keep the computer off until you get a new fan. Having a bad fan will be HORRIBLE for power and such.

Yeah I run an SLI system and the only way to tell that it is on is by the lights in my keyboard. If it is loud it is because your fans are fucked up or you have a really shitty HDD.

you must be running 6800's or a water rig because 7800 -7900 and all the versions inbetween are loud as fuck

If it's the fan, best thing to do is open the PC up again and observe it. See if it got loose and see if there is a way to adjust it. If the sound has anything to do with the motor then the best thing to do is seek professional help.

I'd also mention with my PC i notice the fans speed up when ever i have it perform dynamic tasks or render out scenes with my 3D software. I figure it responds like that when there is alot of activity happening in the system. I cannot claim to be a hardware expert. But Maybe the extra 1 GB Ram you installed makes your cooling system push harder. Removing the Ram Chip and testing it out "may" give you an answer to this reason.

If it was a new Dell ( can't remember if you had mentioned it or not) Your warrenty has been voided from the time you opened it.

Nope all fans, and 2 Evga 7800 GTXs. They are quiet as hell. I can hear my brothers PC across the room, yet the light up keyboard is the only way I can tell my PC is on.

I have this PC for a while n i think the warranty / service thing has expired. The dell representative told me to check where the sound was coming from... but it freakin seems to come from the fan at top back of the PC.I ordered a replacement to this thing through dell too but i have it here for liek 3 months now cuz everytime i try to connect it my self i end up cutting my fingers n the fan (Thats already in there) is almost impossible to take out.Might just call a tech guy (Now idea where to find one) n see if he can figure out if he can put in the fan.. and then i can tell if its the fan that's causing it.Also going to try and see if cleaning up the PC might help.

you can also fix that problem with a hammer, few whacks and ur good to go^^
