Jeffery Goodin faces 101 years in prison for spam

A report on the Mercury News revealed that a man from Los Angeles has been criminally convicted of spam e-mailing and is the first person to be convicted of such a crime in the U.S. Forty-five year old Jeffery Goodin was found guilty of running a running scam that fooled users into giving out personal information. E-mails that Goodin sent out made users believe that they were cooperating with a legitimate business when in fact they were not.

Goodin is convicted under the 2003 CAN-SPAM Act, which makes it illegal for marketers to send out false or misleading information to users. Not only is this illegal, Goodin also sent millions of these e-mails over the course of his spam career. The CAN-SPAM Act also dictates that legitimate e-mails such as newsletters and advertisements must feature a way for recipients to remove themselves from the mailing list.

Prosecutors provided evidence to a jury that Goodin also compromised AOL accounts to send out e-mail to users. Goodin's spam made it appear like his e-mails were being sent from AOL's billing department and told users that if they did not update their information via a website, their accounts would be closed.

Goodin is being convicted of spam, and ten other counts that include wire fraud and unauthorized access to AOL accounts and company trademarks for illegal purposes. He is to be sentenced on June 11th of 2007 and faces up to 101 years in prison.
...and yet, you can walk out with 6 years for murder.

Justice, a crazy yet wonderful thing.

The US Justice department must get a lot of spam...

good riddance, spam emailing is the the second worst offence ever. the worst is creating popup adds.

Not just creating popups, but creating malicious popups.

I'd guess it's because judges are retarded. If you murder one person, then that's 1 serious crime.

If you send out millions of emails, that's several small crimes. Thus, the "total" is much higher then that of murder ~.~

Murder is in degrees, mind you. If you're out for murder in six years, it was either a questionable self-defense case or an accidental "manslaughter" case.

Friend of mine got out on felony parole after 1year in county for shooting a guy dead in the face.

Oakland, the friendship capital of America.

It was actually in Richmond, CA in Point Richmond, which is the nice neighborhood in Richmond.

I lived in Richmond when I was in CA. It's a pretty nice little area.

Oh, and we all know this guys isn't going to serve 101 years so it's kind of a moot point. He'll be out in 2 years tops.

Ya, if you stay around the edges, like Point, Marina Bay and the hills you are ok, but don't go in the middle lol. I lived in central on 6th and nevin for like 2 years, and I fled back to oakland lol, richmond makes oakland look like disneyland sometimes.

Lol, I wish they'd send down the fuckers that are spamming the boards with buycialis links.

They're all cock smokers :D

Leaking infomation > Murder

off-topic a bit :P
you know, if a country throw a EMP bomb over the USA, the USA is fucked because we rely on computer and infomation too much,

Most of the weapon in the US used some kind of computer control and guided system, and they usually gather infomation using computer and GPS stuff and satellite (what ever it spell :P)

a lot of new weapon now also use computer related stuff, like a spec that able to see map digitally, and stuff like that

US Marine, need to be trained how to combat in war without using techology or else we may end up dead :P

Richmond... can't imagine why they'd name an area that xD

The military is smarter than that. They know electronics is a weak point. I would not be surprised if any LRMs have internal guidance backups in case their originating silo/rack loses power, and satellite-guided missiles wouldn't be affected since the satellites are self-powered.

Modern soldiers may have the technology to see heat signatures imprinted on a birds-eye map, but they're still soldiers underneath all that silicon. Basic (i.e. unassisted by technology) combat training is still very mandatory to proceed above the potato peeler ranks... I should hope.

Ok first all the goverment systems and shielded from EMP by one the building they are in and two the ssytem itself and made diffrent from computer that you and me can buy down at the local computer store aka the price or say 20k for a computer that costs 2k at the store or called militiry grade and harded systems. A EMP bomb would not really have that big of a affect on the militiry but out side the militiry ya it be fucked up going to safeway and there system lost all the prices of items in the store making the price check guy work really hard lol.

thows* computers* ect*

The only weapons capable of causing such extensive EMP fields are nuclear weapons. don't worry, the internet being down will be the least of your worries. Lots of military technology and emp sensitive stuff is built with or stored in emp shielding. one way or another, an m16 is still an m16 and those dudes in the marines know how to use one.

no matter how many times people are told never to give certain info away to anyone ever some people still do it. i'm overcome with tears for their plight.
