During its GamesCom press conference today, EA slid a big reveal between its premiere trailers and game demos. Mass Effect 2, previously an exclusive to the Xbox 360, is coming to the PlayStation 3 in January of 2011. The company didn't share details on how it would handle other aspects of the title, like the stream of Cerberus Network downloadable content, or continuity from the first game.

With this in mind, Mass Effect 3 is almost certainly destined to be a dual-platform release. EA may even be working on parity, so that the third installment can come out on both systems simultaneously. In the meantime, PS3 owners who missed out on the highly regarded action RPG don't have to wait much longer.

Looking forward to it, never picked it up for the 360.

While it'd be nice to have ME3 include the PS3, I'm not overly excited either way, since I'll be playing it, like ME & ME2, on the PC.

What Raes said. I already have my save files on PC ready to be transferred to ME3. Speaking of which, without ME1 coming out along with tit, this is kind of a lame endeavor since you won't be able to do the whole transfer your choices from the first game over thing.

Meh, there is that whole sequence where they ask you what happened in the last game, and there's not much actual influence from your previous choices aside from those options that I noticed.

You're right, but I still like having my own files transferred over D:

Was largely inevitable once the PS3 got a certain install base.

I'm curious as to what they'll do considering there is a lack of ME1. Perhaps they might do what Level 5 did and package the original in with this one? Or perhaps they will release it separately around the same time?

I'd absolutely love to have the original on PS3 in any case.

I don't hate this.

What of Mass Effect 1? o.o

Pretty sure microsoft published 1 and they own the right to it. I wouldn't really be expecting that one to be coming for ps3.

That makes sense, then.

That is true, however, EA bought the rights from them if I'm not mistaken. In any case many people are asking BioWare on their forums about this due to the save game transfer.

I don't see how they'll do this without ME1. There are a lot of small choices in ME1, whether to kill or not kill people, and other things that are small choices in ME1 but put together in ME2 make the game feel A LOT more personalized. Some of these people give quests that aren't there without them, and others replace generic NPCs that give quests. Plus I think some of the decisions in ME1 carry all the way to ME3.

If you start a fresh ME2 game without importing the game just assumes you killed everyone across the board whenever you had a choice. I doubt any intro will cover all of these.

How about your love interest, will they just default you the love interest human of the opposite sex that you made Shepard, which is what they do now if you don't import a game.

I think PS3 players are going to get the game you get on PC and XBOX360 if you don't import along with some back story of the key plot points in ME1. The intro can't possibly cover some of this other stuff or it would be hours long.

Also how do you make these choices in the intro without knowing the elements that lead up to the decision in the first game? You're almost just picking stuff at random.

ME1 was that good a game, people are really missing out. But I guess if you never played the first game you won't know what is there and what is not so it won't stop ME2 from being a great game for players, but they're doing people a disservice by not giving them both games.

That sequence doesn't set past events, but drops previous story bombs on you. There is a set default string of events for non-imported Sheps. And it's pretty much all the renegade/space racist options.

Basically the big ones that are definitely going to have a major impact on 3 are Wrex living, Rachni Queen living, Council living, and who you chose as Ambassador.

Spoiler:
Some of these decisions affect which space bros are going to help you in the fight against the "Reapers." With Wrex dead, his brother takes over the Urdnot clan and instead of uniting the other clans under a single Krogan banner, seeks to exterminate them. Krogan influence in the final battle will either be extremely minimal, or non-existant. The same goes for the Rachni, letting the Queen go means she's indebted to Sheperd, and her brood will assist him.

Also you miss out on why Cerberus is hated by the Alliance, other than Miranda, Jacob, and TIM telling you the Alliance thinks they're a little fringe. Which is tremendously understating it. Let's not forget the whole Garrus/Tali/Liara/Kaiden/Ashley reunite scenes. Without playing the first game, people are essentially going to think "Who are these schmucks?"
