Simple enough question.

Say I do an attack while meleeing and follow it up by a ranged attack. How does that affect the delay on my next swing??

Same thing for spells? Is that any different from ranged attack??

I always wondered this. I always found it weird that you could do a Melee then a WS right after. I don't know though. An answer would be awesome.

As I understand it, spells stop your delay, and as soon as you're done casting your delay will start again.

Ranged Attacks stop your melee delay as well. A majority of Ranged Attack delay occurs during the "aiming" animation. Abilities and Skills pause delay a set amount of time, thats pretty short as well.

Im not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure its the same as a spell. Just stops the delay while using the ranged attack, then starts back up after you fire.

There is a noticable glitch in the melee system where, for example, when I'm on Corsair, I'm able to deal melee strikes (dual wielding) and fire off my ranged attack. But that happens every now and then. It seems like if you use your RA macro like one the millisecond before your melee delay is up you swing and aim for the RA at the same time. I know it sounds weird but it happens.

The same thing has happened to me while casting spells PLD or a mage job. Its like I'll see the spell type animation but complete the melee swing animation then cast the spell.

If I do it again I'll make a picture of what I"m talking about.

Yeah I know. Thats actually what made me ask this. Cuz it seems to not account for extra delay during that xD

Yeah but everyone else is right about the delay thing though. My glitch post is the only exception to the delay reset condition.

I don't have any hard data on it, but my experience is that the delay after a ranged attack is proportional to the delay of the ranged weapon. I've noticed while xping on THF that I'll start swinging daggers again or am able to use SA and TA sooner with a 250 delay crossbow as opposed to a 400 delay recurve bow. This is in addition to the delay before the shot is fired from a ranged weapon. This is one of several reasons I look for short delay ranged weapons as THF, those being mainly crossbows.

Finally, yes if you time it right you can fire your crossbow while still swinging daggers. However, the programmers were smarter than that, and the total delay of your combined attacks is roughly the same. It might shave off a fraction of a second, but not enough to even notice with a nit-picking parser.

I have cast utsu and hit with my axes when dual weilding before, you just have to time it right and you will swing while casting, its pretty coo

My guess would be that it's more likely than anything simply latency; If you hit a spell then RA or JA within [perhaps 10-20?] delay of your weapon, it'll likely show you attacking mid-cast or mid-RA.

There's also another relatively easy alternative to pull off - if you're using weapons that hit multiple times or play a job that can attack multiple times: NIN/WAR, WAR/NIN, Fortitude WAR, THFs and Soboro SAM will very often see such a thing happen - it's also incredibly easy to see if using a KClub.

There's a difference between when the animation for swinging weapons begins and when the hits are actually registered. You can see it fairly easily by watching your TP meter just as you're about to start a melee round. Your TP will go up when the hits are registered, and then the animation will begin. If you start casting just after the hit is registered, but before the animation begins, you'll get the glitched cast/swing.

You can see the effect of the same thing while using Utsusemi; if you watch your shadow icon as you lose your last shadow, it'll disappear just before the monster's attack animation begins. The shadow -1 text suffers from the same delay.
