Michael Phelps...My Hero :O

If parents have to rely on other adults as role models for their children, then they have already failed as parents.

You can't always choose who your child admires although I agree that parents should try to be the best example for their children. In the past it was easier for parents to hide character flaws of some children's heroes but even then kids would grow up and find out later. The 24/7 media coverage that we have today makes that impossible. I agree with alanon that the term role model really bothers me. Not the fact that children look up to these people but the fact that some parents demand that they be perfect. It's like some parents that I know that bring their daughters to a Britney Spears concert then get mad because she's dancing provocatively and stripping. Children need to know that if they make a mistake that it's not the end of the world but they will face consequences. Parents need to be the one to teach them that no one's perfect but admit your faults and deal with it.

OT: I think that it's good that he isn't denying it. It seems that some of his sponsors are supporting him too.

I dunno, think he shoulda just ignored it. There is no 100% proof that it was pot he was smoking. Its legal to sell bongs for a reason, because they are actually called "water pipes" and can be used to smoke anything, namely tobacco. I think the whole thing is fucking stupid, but see no reason he should have even acknowledged it.

lol @ Rainerx...I swear half the time those commercials come on I'm either drunk or high and can't stop laughing at them.

Well I think him being stripped of millions in endorsements for doing a drug that wasn't a performance enhancing drug (yea yea we know, drugs are bad) is silly. If he was in the Netherlands and it was done legally, would he have gotten the same treatment?

All I could think about was this old ass commercial:

So he did something that AT LEAST 100,000,000 Americans have done before. Why does anyone care? If he had a few beers at his house, would he get the same press? This is dumb.

So what's worse. Smoking pot outside of the run of the competition, or illegally entering underaged athletes?

I would say underage athletes because of the way these poor little girls are treated and abused for the "good" of their country. Plus it actually has to do with the sport while Phelps's actions have nothing at all to do with his sport, not to mention I would say at least half of all americans over the age of 14 have smoked pot at some point. Maybe cut out the 75+ as well and the % would really increase.

Pot is not a performance enhancing drug.

Unless there's a BIG hershey bar at the end... then... YOU WILL BE THERE!
i love Robin Williams. oh and another thing. was that a pick out of one of those stupid supermarket tabloid magazines? if it was, why the hell would anyone even think its real?

Well he did apologize for it so I'm guessing its real. All I know is that I'd like to smoke a bowl with that man, maybe he'd discuss how he is really a fish in disguise or something lol.

How dare he enjoy the fruits this earth has to offer. I mean, he should have gone to a Doctor who takes pride in 'pen to the paper' and got the chemical Valium, natures Valium (as my mother calls it) is a down right SIN! Not-to-mention very hard to control.

good, now maybe I won't have to see his ugly face on my TV so much

I'm sorry but he's butt ugly. The type where I'd have to put a paper bag over his head. His body is nice but thats about it. Anything above the neck has to go.

It wasn't a serious question dude. I was just telling it as it is - a lot worse shit went down that deserves punishment in regards to the Olympics than taking away Phelps' medals because he got caught smoking pot months later.

He has a freak body though, it's why he's such a good swimmer, but he's still a freak.

The only people who truly care are those with tight-knit "morals" and their spawn.

And his sponsors, and the sheriff who has to file paperwork and maybe charge Phelps with a misdemeanor offense, and the children who respected Phelps, and his family, and perhaps the olympic committee who decides if he will or won't be attending the next olympics, ... you get the idea.

Because doing pot clearly gives you an edge in sports.

Illegal is illegal. He broke the rules and is paying the consequences with the media blitz. He should've known better than to be caught photographed with a bong pressed to his lips but that's a moot point now. Don't get me wrong, I think this thing was blown way out of proportion.. but that's kind of to be expected because of his ridiculous popularity. Either way, I hope it doesn't affect his future~ he's what 22 years old? Would suck if this stayed with him for the rest of his career.. only time will tell.

Don't have time to read the whole thread but here's my opinion, whether you want it or not.

The only reason people are upset over this is that it's shattering the myth that the ultra-conservatives have spent the last 40+ years building up that pot will turn you into some sort of low-life loser degenerate. Seriously, if you got the (lung)strength to win 14 olympic gold medals and smoke pot at the same time(not exactly the same time, he tested clean during the olympics), more power to ya.

That's a fucking good quote. I'll have to remember that.

It's hardly a good quote. You can't ultimately choose who your children look up to, especially for families that are in unfortunant situations. Sure, it's nice for a child to look up to their parents working McJobs 60 hours a week to make ends meet, but it isn't something I, were I to be a parent in that situation, would want my child to aspire to do with their life.

Perhaps not aspire to as far as the "pride" you can have with such a job. But I'll tell you what, there's no shame in a parent working 60 + hours a week at some fast food restaurant to support their families. It's false pride to think otherwise. That's something to be proud of, hardworking in a shitty "teenage" position to support your family. Perhaps their choices earlier in life lead to such an outcome but their children would see the dedication they have to providing the best life possible to them.

The quote was great, one word made it great .. "rely". If parents DO need to depend on other people whether they're in the media or otherwise then they have failed. Parents need to instill in their children the importance of hard work and pride in a job well done, not athletes.

=) Not to harp on you Skaw.

That would be the hope, but unfortunately isn't the reality most of the time. A lot of people (especially children, cause wtf do they know about responsibilities) have a deep-seeded sense of self-entitlement. Until they're old enough to understand how the world really works (and it does happen sooner than later for some), many kids will feel embarrassed about what their McJob having parent(s) do for them.
