Ok here is an email i got from my mother today. I did look up this bill and it is real. As for the start date I do not know. If its some kind of hoax i'm sorry, but thought i would just post it FYI.

--------------

Mandatory draft for boys and girls (ages 18-26) starting June 15, 2005 is something that everyone should know about. This literally effects everyone since we all have or know children that will have to go if this bill passes.

There is pending legislation in the house and senate (companion bills: S89 and HR 163), which will time the program’s initiation so the draft can begin as early as spring, 2005, just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public’s attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately. Details and links follow:

This plan, among other things, eliminates higher education as a shelter and includes women in the draft. Also, crossing into Canada has already been made very difficult.

Action:

Please send this on to all parents and teachers you know, and all the aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents . . . And let your children know - - - it’s their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change!!

This legislation is called HR 163 and can be found in detail at this website: http://thomas.loc.gov/

Just enter in “HR 163” and click search and will bring up the bill for you to read. It is less than two pages long.

If this bill passes, it will include all men and ALL WOMEN from ages 18-26 in a draft for military action. In addition, college will no longer be an option for avoiding the draft and they will be signing an agreement with Canada which will no longer permit anyone attempting to dodge the draft to stay within it’s borders. This bill also includes the extension of military service for all those that are currently active. If you go to the select service web site and read their 2004 FYI Goals you will see that the reasoning for this is to increase the size of the military in case of terrorism. This is a critical piece of legislation; this will effect our undergraduates, our children and our grandchildren. Please t ake the time to writ your congressman and let them know how you feel about this legislation.

www.house.gov ; or www.senate.gov ; or http://www.senate.gov.

Please also write to your representatives and ask them why they aren’t telling their constituents about these bills and write to newspapers and other media outlets to ask them why they are not covering this important story. The draft $28 million has been added to the 2004 selective service system budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective service must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which is lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation.

Please see www.sss.gov/perplan_fy2004.html to view the Selective Service System annual performance plan, fiscal year 2004.

The pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide. Thought this is an unpopular election year topic, military experts and influential members of congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld’s prediction of a “long, hard slog” in Iraq and Afghanistan (and permanent state of war on terrorism) proves accurate, the U.S. may have no choice but to draft.

www.hsldra.or/legislation/national/2003/s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National service Act of 2003, “to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons (age 18-26) in the United States, including women perform, a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.” These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services. Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era. College and Canada will not be options. In December, 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a “smart border declaration,” which could be used to keep would-be dra ft dodgers in. Signed by Canada’s minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, in the declarative involves a 30 point plan which implements, among other things, a “pre-clearance agreement” of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

WHAT TO DO: Tell your friends, contact your legislators and ask them to oppose these bills. Just type “congress” into the aol search engine and imput your zip code. A list of reps will pop up with a way to email them directly. We can’t just sit and pretend that by ignoring it, it will go away. We must voice our concerns and create the world we want to live in for our children and grandchildren.

Yes, being prior military, I can appreciate this myself.

For a long time the women of the military have been whining, we want full rights, we want to be on the front lines, Women can do anything men can do in the military.

Well......YOU GOT IT!!

Welcome to equal rights.

All of that complaining finally landed you women a spot in the draft.

I personally hated working with women in the military because 99% of them couldn't handle their own.

They complained too much and they physical requirements were never on an equal field yet they still wanted equal treatment.

I think there is nothing wrong with the draft.

I volunteered for service and did my time and since then my in-active reserve has expired. I may still get recalled like my brother just did. But hey as much as I disagree with the president, (which was the reason I didn't re-enlist) I would go back and fight some more.

This draft is being enacted for a possible worst case scenario.

I think you all may be worrying too much but hey concern yourselves regardless.

WAR is not fun but when it comes to defending my own country I don't mind but to go fight this pointless war is absolutely rediculous.

Thats my rant, ramble, and opinion.

Thank You,

Mohoso

June 12 2005 I will be 27... Just past the age limit.

This plan, among other things, eliminates higher education as a shelter and includes women in the draft. Also, crossing into Canada has already been made very difficult.

Does it still allow pussing out and going (possibly? maybe not?) into the national guard to let my family connections keep me out of the war?

It just amuses me that this email is presenting as "bad things" the closing of loopholes in the law. :P

As for the draft, I tried to fucking enlist twice. Medically unfit, for a variety of reasons. Hey, maybe they'll let me in this time. :P

My understanding of the Bill is it is not the Draft, but Mandatory Service. That basicly between the ages of 18-26, you must do at least 2 years (But can be extended by the president, with out congressional approval, i.e. the Draft with out the Draft) in a Military Service or a National Service (i.e. So basically the children of public officials, only have to have there kids intern for them for 2 years, rather than go to war). Does also require women to register with Selective Service.

I tried to join too after 9/11. I made the mistake of letting them know i was on anti-depressants. They contacted my doctor to see if it was ok to get me off of them and he told them no it was not a good/safe idea. :?

Well, Selective Service presents its terms in the same fashion. I think it means "Mandatory if we need you" which is basically what the draft is.

Ok, let's think about this before elevating blood pressure.

This bill was introduced into Congress, a total of 15 Congress delegates are in support, please note that they are all Representatives, not Senators.

So, the bill status reads:

1/7/2003:
Referred to the House Committee on Armed Services.
2/3/2003:
Executive Comment Requested from DOD.
2/3/2003:
Referred to the Subcommittee on Total Force.

The Subcommittee will pass a recommendation to the House Committee, which in turn will pass a recommendation to the House, then the House may or may not vote on it to pass it to the Senate. There are 435 Representatives in the House, what are the chances that they will vote yes on something like this?

There are 100 Senators in the Senate, what are the chances they vote yes on it?

That's not even talking about the President vetoing it.

Of 535 members of Congress, only two have children in the Armed Services, none of which are in Combat Units.

This bill is never gonna make it past the House, even if the committee's should approve it. Done and done, what's next?

Old news. There would be tremendous public outrage at such a move, if it ever came to pass. There has also been talk of Cheney and Ashcroft going around and pushing membership for draft boards, to try to achieve this same thing. I wouldn't really have a problem with it if this was World War III and the martians were slaughtering every organism with more than three cells, and even those weren't all that safe. But we aren't. They aren't. The protists are safe. If they want more troops in Iraq, however, I have a big problem with that. Iraq isn't a war, officialy. They're probably calling it "an interruptive/precautionary police action." or something suitably stupid. All it is a political manuever. Votes, oil, cocaine, hookers. That's what he wants. In that order.

This kind of relates to this post, kind of not. :( Sorry, But I was thinking of joining one of the armed forces once I turn 18. What are the things they will deny you over? All i've heard were anti-depressants.

If this every passes,(And I know it probably won't...)Its would be the biggest mistake he ever made, Just kind of like Bush going into Iraq to find "Weapons of Mass Destruction" they never had....
But I know how to avoid it if it does pass
Move to canada!

Any kind of back problems, any kind of prior surgery you may have had other than the appendix, any visits to Cuba, any relation to Communists, that's about it.

wow....this is a big mistake.....W/o kids in college we will sink to the stupidest country in the world. It's also sorta scary like i know i'd never want to fight in the war it's too scary and too sad
if this ever was to pass it would be a dictatorship
what if you are against violence or your religion didn't allow it?
Isn't that also breaking the constitution?
Our right of opinion?
i dunno but it seems odd.

and think about the pledge of allegiance
"one nation under god"
now in the commandments it says thou shalt not kill, does it not?
"with liberty and justice for all"
What about justice for those who believe in peace?

It feels as if there is something missing

Personally. I believe every Citizen should do some sort of Community service. Be it Military or other Voluntary Community Action. It is your DUTY as a Citizen to Return your Effort and Talents to the Country that provides for you. I'd vote for the Bill. European Countries have been drafting since ages. Why can't Americans wrap their Brains around it ?

I Serve Proudly. And when or rather, should I move back to Germany, I'll proudly serve there, because they will draft me. Why ? Because I BELIEVE IN CITIZENSHIP.

I also believe in Ethics, Morals, Values and all of those Ancient and Old Fashioned Things, so I guess I'm a dying breed.

(edited for Clarity.)

Tip for the Joiners. If you have any "A" Conditions such as "Anti Depressants" "Aot standing Tickets", Stuff like that some Branches may reject you for.
But unless you have a Permanent Condition that renders you "Combat Uncapable" or Legal Trouble you should be Fine. Oh and on a more Personal note. GO AIR FORCE !!
