Minimum wage increase passes House

Are you people for real? First off living wage is a joke. How many of you people that are against a raise in minimum wage are still on mommy and daddys healthcare? How many of you pay rent/morgage, car loan/insurance. How many of you buy your own food? What about student loans? That right there is enough to keep you in debt until you're 35 if you don't get a job in the feild that you selected in college.

Or are you in a union that strikes when they feel they aren't getting payed enough?

Outsourcing? What are they going to do? Fax the groceries onto the shelfs at you local supermarket? Maybe they will beam over your starbucks when you order it at a MAC machine type counter. Get real people. The raise in minimum wage is a good thing, because in regards to inflation it is 10 years behind. Or should people be made to work a whole hour just so they can buy a gallon of milk and something to eat that day?

QFT. Can;t outsource the service industry, and that is what the country runs on.

I'm paying for my own college education and will welcome this raise in my pay any day.

That's one dimensional thinking. People don't outsource grocery clerks, they hire illegal immigrants who are paid under the table - these people don't get health benefits, minimum wage or pay income tax.

People get replaced by vending machines. Look at Japan. Their labor is so expensive that anyone who can be replaced by a machine, is replaced by a machine.

Whenever you forcibly raise the cost of doing business, here's what happens.

Scenario 1
-The end cost to the consumer rises.

Scenario 2
-The business finds a way to get around the raised cost.

Scenario 3
-The affected business shuts down.

Businesses are out there to make money, unforuntately, just because your tuition bills are high, they aren't going to continue to function while being unprofitable. Simply saying that we should increase wages by making it a low tends to backfire and hurt the people it's intended to help.

Things like this are the result of people thinking emotionally not logically, in other words: S-T-U-P-I-D-I-T-Y.

I have a question for you Fire. How old are you? Here is a second question, what minimum wage job gives you heath care benefits?

I'm 22 and when I was 19 I spent about a year working for radioshack where I got base pay of minimum wage and there was a health plan. Radioshack offers some commission based on a certain amount of sales. They also never hire illegal immigrants and of course we were getting ruined by the walmart next door that had much lower prices by having all illegal immigrants.

The point is, people have to buy food but they don't have to buy food at the place that follows the rules most strictly. If you want to make things better for those people on minimum wage, then go in and fuck over the stores that sell people products cheaper by ignoring basic laws of our country. Instead the government tries to fix the problem by throwing down stricter laws instead of enforcing the ones already on the books. Realistically if we had better enforcement than people would be able to find jobs above minimum wage easily without employers needing to be forced to. They'd simply want to get the enmployees because only the legal ones would be allowed to work.

Please save us from the preaching politics in Democrats vs. Republicans in this bill. I don't care if it is a poltical stunt, or to actually help the people. It's going to help alot of low income families that live off of minimum wage.

And to Acutie's statement :

Personal income affects the economy. The more money people have and recieve through income, the more they will be able to spend, which then cycles the money. It's going to affect tax dollars, but it may hopefully take unfortunate people off of the street and help them start new lives.

Then, with more people applying for jobs, the business is able to produce more of its product. And then, it is able to gain more money, for it is able to pump out more of its product for a profit.

However, economically, $300,000,000,000 is a large sum of money for this. Needless to say, taxes are going to go up. So, it has its pros and cons.

From a personal standpoint, I find this to be positive for the most part. There is always need for improvement, and a $2.00 increase may be much.

No offense, but if you're talking tax increases, you can't ignore that congress wants to make a serious reduction on inheritance of multi-million dollar estates...that will REALLY make taxes go through the roof.

One more thing to throw out there, Radioshack is more recently being completely devastated financially. Every store needs minimum 8 employees(bigger ones have more like 15), but internet stores replace people with software. Anything that's not perishable can be more cheaply and easily bought on the internet for the most part, from the minimum wage workers at book stores, DVD stores, computer stores, ext; with the exception of grocery stores we need a surpringly small amount of people. compared to the structure we currently have because those people are cheaper to hire than the technological equivalent.

In a long term way, it is better for our society that we change over, less people to do more work. In the short term there will be many displaced people by unnaturally speeding up the process by increasing the cost of having people.

As the old saying goes: If you don't like your job, quit. Well that's a nice ideal but some people need their jobs even if they're not great. By increasing minimum wage you actually take jobs away.

I hate illegal immigrants and job outsourcing.. I hate how business higher ups can't sacrifice some of their income for people lower down.. capitalism might have brought a nice lifestyle for people but it's also something that's destroying our country now. Our country getting more indebt, unemployment seems to be on the rise for legal citizens, jobs being shipped over to india or china cause business people want more money so they can have bigger houses and useless shit they'll prolly never use.. I swear.. this world is turning into a world of whores and no honor or care about anyone else in the world if that person doesn't bring them any happiness. Granted, I'm not a much better person but I don't have much to offer to help others anyways *shrugs* volunteer when I can and help around my neighborhood.. donate money when I have money to spare (but being in debt from colleges that want more money even though they get millions upon millions from alumini and other things.. and then spending it on things not needed..cause no college seems to care about education for education's sake or about actually helping.. they all think of it as a business...) bleh.. I just really hate how shallow and bad things seem in this world. Not saying it's all bad.. but more and more seems to be getting worse.

Hence why these games we're playing seem so appealing :P

I know :P that's why I like reading books, watching movies/TV (when it's fantasy or sci-fi usually.. Star Trek ftw), or playing games in general. Escape from such harsh reality weeeeee

If my fries go up in price, someone dies...

I haven't been paid minimum wage since my first job, when I was 15 on a worker's permit. Haven't graduated from collage yet, and every job I get pays a few more $/hour than the last. Good paying jobs are easy to find, as long as you're not a prude about it. I cant tell you how many times I've wanted to work at some place like McDonalds once or twice a week just to have fun. I wanna man the fuzz box and take people's orders, and I certainly wouldn't need more than minimum wage to do it. Its a stupid easy job. Good paying, in demand, jobs already existed, but people felt they were too good for it. PGE workers make 20+/hour and they dont require high school deplommas to get paid that much. Garbage men get $30+/hour cuz you are always getting hazard pay. Janitor's can make decent cash too. Supermarkets have been 8/hour(starting) for bag boys in my area for years now. Starbucks has a 401k and full benefits available to it's employees that start @ over $9/hour, with the ability to transfer between stores and retain wage rates.

There are so many stupid easy jobs that dont require anything beyond the bare minimum of education, and pay rediculously well. Those minimum wage jobs exist for the minors in my eyes. If you are making minimum wage past 18 and not pulling in some extra from commisions/tips, you phail.

Because "your" taxes will go through the roof, not to mention everything else will be more expensive.

Score one for the super-rich.

Just to note on jobs... Illegal immigrants don't take all of our jobs. There are plenty of jobs out here, but us "Americans" don't want to take them because they are "too dirty" or what not. <. <

And Hell, everything raises taxes Darkdante.

Illegal immigrants aren't the problem rather the employers who use them to run other businesses who follow the rules out of business. It's impossible to expect a company that follows the rules to compete against a company who uses immigrants who don't require any of the things that our government imposes that makes employers so expensive to have. Increasing the requirements before actually going out there and enforcing the first rules simply creates a larger rift forcing honest people out of business.

I know many people who graduated college. You know what they're doing now? Mopping floors and flipping burgers. Because you don't just need a degree to get a job, you need several years of experience too MOST of the time. And on top of that they're in huge debt cause of tuition fees.

The standards of the job market have changed since several years ago. What used to be "go to school = get a good job" now just is "go to school = pay off debts for your life working the same job as the douches who didn't go to school". If you're LUCKY however...you may get a decent job. But even then you still end up paying off debts till you're 60. Is that such a great lifestyle?

because statistics show that 80% of the people who go to college to work for a degree for a job that they want often don't make the job=/

Question to Neophytal, if it were possible to ban hiring foreigners from other countries or at least tax heavily would that help? Your point is a very good one.

I know around here our minimum wage is 5.15 an hour, which is really horrid. But then you have to look at cost of living vs the pay. In bigger city areas my 2 story house would cost 2-3 times more than it does in this little backwoods town. When I was working at Wal-mart, however, they raised everyone's base pay by .60 cents as well as thier hiring starting pay, because they realized the cost of living/gas was not adequate to the pay. The two dollar adjustment, in my opinion, is a welcome change. Although I won't benefit from it as I'm now working a salaried job, I am still happy to see it going through and hopefully it will counter the horrific gas prices. Perhaps anyway, though I know very little when it comes to economy lol. I see more money, I get happy. I'm sure thats the same for many people.

And all the comments about people who have mommy and daddy pay for everything, QFT. As someone who has supported herself without family help since 17, I can deffinatly understand why anyone who knows the value of a dollar will welcome this.

if you want to blame anyone, blame congress. since the last nationwide minimum wage increase (10 years ago approx) the congrass has given themselves 7 raises totalling more than $30,000.
