I have heard that:
-MP's are time based (how long a MP lasts is on a time set)

i have also heard that:
-MP's are hit based (how many hits u possible on the point)

soo....which is right?

hmm, good question, from my observation i have noticed:
They Spawn randomly and stay for a Random Time, and once the get hit a certain number of times, they Vanish ... so i don't know exactly how that works, but it seems to be a Combo of Both.

In all my mining, I've never seen a mine point just vanish in front of me, so I'm going to say hit based. Keits could probably tell you more, I've only mined for like 3 weeks, and 95% of the time in one place only.

I have full Workers Gear, and I've seen numerous Mining Points despawn right in front of me (without ever touching them).

I could theorize for hours about how exactly Mining Points spawn, despawn, and how loot from them is actually decided... but even with solid info on those topics, it wouldnt change your 'mining strategy' one bit.

If you want lots of theory and stuff, i can type up what i've seen and think later; but right now my finger really hurts for some reason. :(

well when ur finger gets better, i'd appreciate if you could tell me your theory.

I've done lots and lots of mining, and only ever seen one vanish once, but once is enough to imply that they do have a set time limit.. 99% of the time they disappear after a couple hits, and a very important thing to remember is that they respawn somewhere else the second one disappears.. As soon as you take that 3rd or 4th or 9th swing, and it's no longer there, one has popped up at one of the other spawn points..
This means that there really is no competition when it comes to mining, since the more people are in a mine, the more frequently MPs are respawning.. I've actually had some of my best luck with Gusgen being ridiculously crowded..

Just had to add that little bit cause all too often I see people yelling at other people to leave so they arent taking 'their' mining points, and it's upsetting :(

If that's true or not I can't really say. I've never had someone stand at every mining point in Gusgen to check, but it's alway been my belief that there's a set number during a certain time period. That said, I also believe that it is possible to 'mine a place out,' meaning that too many people for too long will only result in copper, tin and broken axes, when the best you'll be able to do is zinc or iron (like last night ><).

I have seen point disappear while targeted, and while on my comp, I have come across points that I cannot mine (doesn't happen on PS2. A few friends in my LS have comlpained of the same thing, so I know it's not just me).

I've been mining since around lvl 45 (and with full equip upgrade, dark and ice staves, whm spells for 25-37, and ancient magic, that's quite a bit of gil), and I've spent a lot of time running around Gusgen like a chicken with my head cut off.

If there's any one bit of advice I can offer, it's to check ahead and see how many people are there before you set out. Too many people means lots of competition, and whether the points auto-respawn or not, if you're running with two or three people right next to you, it doesn't make much difference.
In those instances, /cheer Escape ^^

Just some things that I have noticed after logging around 60 hours of mining in Ifrit's Cauldron

- MPs are time based. They can despawn in front of you.
- The moon cycle affects rare ores (don't ask me when - I have said too much!!)
- The day affects MPs and how often they spawn
- The day affects mining results

What I have noticed was:
Firesday = more breaks
Watersday and Iceday = less points
Lightsday = More and deeper points
Darksday and Earthsday = improved rare ore chance
Windsday and Lightningsday = normal?

- MPs have a warm up period to deter campers.
- MPs also seem to have a cool down period associated to active time

I will be the first to admit that this is all speculation, and it may well vary from person to person. Just thought I would add my 2 cents ^^

Mining is definately dependant on the day.. I actually started heading out only when I know I'll hit it on Darksday, and others who have taken up mining have noted the same. I hadn't considered the possibility of a 'warm up' time for newly spawned points, but that is an interesting concept, and would make sense. Camping a spot is such an inefficient way of mining anyway..
