So I log off this morning, close all open windows, and leave my computer sitting. Screen saver comes on, I walk away and go to bed.

I wake up tonight and my comp says:

Can not start windows. Kernal file blah blah missing.

Am I fucked? Must I reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows?

It really sucks that it happened now, too. I just worked 9 days in a row, and now I have 2 off. Oh well  plenty of time to fix my comp and reinstall fucking EVERYTHING

Do you have Windows XP? Did you try doin' a System Restore? Don't know if this will help but mebbe if you restore it to a few days ago it'll fix itself.

I was getting this problem a lot on another machine. You will need a windows cd so you can enter the recovery console and copy over the corrupted file from the cd. Do a search in google with that exact file name and a word or two from the error, you will get hundreds of detailed walkthroughs. If the problem persists, you will have to reformat. If it never happens again, lucky you .

Hopefully its not a hardware problem cuz if it is your in for some fun.

Othewise just do a repair install and you should be fine.

ok, when I actually had more than 30 seconds to look at the message, I saw that it said "There are no .dll files present that are required to run Kernal." or something close to that.

Truthfully I have no Idea about how either of those types of files work or where they are located on my computer.

I do know this though: If anything happens to them you are in a world of shit.

So, 3 hours after I started working on it, I have most of my programs back. I have downloaded and installed all the windows updates, which there are a TON of. I bought this computer like a year before SP2 came out. Found a copy of Norton got it updated. Did a full scan because norton wouldn't shut up about it. POL is updating.

Now all I need is the 30+ hours of music, all the venture brothers episodes, all my screen shots, all my macros, and windower and I'm set.

/sigh

Moral of the story: Back up yer shit. If you do nothing else ever to your computer, back up your data.
