As a bard puller I've become very aware of the casting range of monsters - and I'm wondering if anyone else is running into this problem too...

Well most annoying, the monsters can cast a few feet outside your range, so if you do an elegy and make a dash for it, then wait at camp, they may approach you and start casting outside of your range to respond with a spell. This isn't a big deal, because you can just step a few feet back and reel them in.

But what happened tonight was different. I was playing around with a pudding, sleeping it and stuff trying to move it somewhere when I slept and ran out of range and waited. Well it woke up and stood there. So I thought I lost hate like usual with pudding. Walked in to reestablish hate before it depopped and then BAM, Thundaga 3 and I'm dead.

I searched my chat log and there was no warning of Thundaga 3. Anyone else run into the mob being out of range of you being able to see what they're doing, but still casting on you?

Their cast range is less than engage range, and you can see anything they start casting while in engage range, and a little beyond that.

It could have been your filters, with the mob turning yellow and no longer being a "Foe" or could have been him casting on a party member while you were out of range to see the spell start casting, or could have just been a bug.

I have noticed, also when I play BRD, that you must be out of range when the spell also goes off, not only once during the duration. If you run away out of range while it is still casting, but come back into range right at the end, the spell will still go off and you will still be hit. I noticed this a lot in KRT with the skeleton mages.

As far as the chat log, I have no idea.

Don't they have a move called Xenoglossia or something, where it gives them one spell with instantcast? Perhaps it had perviously used that move or something?

1. My filters were fine, because I was watching things cast all night.

2. I was out of range when it woke up and stayed out of range until I ran in range for a second and got blasted.

3. There were no party members, I was solo. I was just pulling the puddings to screw with the melees at the pudding camp.

I've had it happen to me. I come back after they're casting some ridiculously long spell (probably something I'm weak to due to Blue Cape, like Flare or Burst). Once the Boreal Tiger kept drawing me in while casting Flare, that was annoying.

I've also had mobs cast on me while they were moving after I've pulled them.

I have seen mobs cast long spells and a few seconds later see "The monster is no longer silenced." And this isn't even a lagged casting, this is maybe 10-15 seconds after he started casting.

Well unless the mob is stunned then if it's awoken from sleep or unsilenced, the spell will finish casting. The issue is if it shouldn't have been able to cast in the first place, cause the player targeted was out of range.

Some monsters get cast range so big that they can cast out of even your chat log's range. Vivian, for example, has the unique feature in which her weaponskill covers virtually an entire grid on the map; you hafto be a good 10s in running distance away from her to not be hit by her AOEs...that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Puddings are just able to start casting from a ridiculous distance away as well.

And yeah, mobs do get some other stupid advantages, i.e. the running cast as Blue's already mentioned. One thing I always hated was that Summoner mobs can summon elementals even when silenced. =/
