More E-Peen Dots?

Black is basically the new Red. Which sucks for people who use it and didn't have red to begin with.

Ah well, sucks to be them

While I think it is an absolutely terrible idea to give in to the handful of people the community thinks so little of that they have branded their opinions sub-par, it will just mean this:
Black is basically the new Red.
So... Eh. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Doesn't seem pointless to me, there will always be a few people who bitch about something so let them and their tender ego be. If they get so butt hurt when they get rated down give them an option to shut up. People will still know regardless who the idiots are. A red dot never made a big diff, neither will a black dot.

A lot of people still find it fun so instead of scraping the whole thing just let the babies have their disable shit. Why remove it just because a select few can't take a rate down? seems pointless.

uh, why even HAVE a reputation system if you can disable it? seems pointless.
We weren't (and honestly, didn't need to be) consulted before it was implemented. Some people didn't want it beforehand, we don't want to force-feed them. A prime network leaves aesthetic options up to the users so they can customize their experience to be comfortable and suitable, based on their individual needs/wants.

I don't know why everyone who was red or gray is now black. Doesn't seem like that should've happened... I didn't override any group's default rep value or anything. All I did was change the "allow users to disable rep" option in a few usergroups.

I'll gander over the groups and see if I can reset stuff.

The option isn't for disabling reputation across the board, it's for hiding your own reputation.

They're all black because everyone who was red checked the box, hiding their reputation from view and replacing it with a black box. It does nothing for aesthetics, it just lets them hide their reputation value from everyone else.

My bad, I used the wrong-ass word there. The option actually says "allow users to hide their reputation", so you're right in that I didn't enable them to disable it. Pollypickedapackofpickledpeppers

It's not just previously red users; it seems to be anyone with a rep value of less than 10. So if you see a black dot now, that person is either below val10 (by default, everyone starts with 10) or has it disabled.

Still odd that there are people with red dots whose last visit was before that change, and just a question: since your rep value is alot less than 10, did yours turn to a black dot and you had to manually re-enable it for yourself?

One last random question, if you "disable" it, does it just hide it, or delete all reputation?

Despite saying disabled, I'm inclined to think it just hides it since you can 'enable' it and your bar comes back. You can still rate up/down people who have disabled it, and presumably be rated up/down as well. I would say you're just pretending it doesn't exist to you and you only.

Yeah, it's so those with bad reputations can try to hide from them like wimps. If you don't care about the system, then don't use it and don't pay attention to other people's rep. Disabling it shouldn't even be an option, really; or if it's there, it should hide everyone's rep from you, not hide your rep from everyone. It's just a way for people with shitty reps to puss out of having to display them. Everyone who has a black dot might as well have a red one at this point.

The dots aren't much more than a minigame, really. No need tossing them. I haven't recieved or given all that many- not incredibly interested in the number of dots I have. I do like checking for comments in my User CP though. Good or bad, it's nice to have a post that struck a chord one way or another. I also agree that at this point, we might as well disable the feature to disable reputation. Black really is the new red. Really though, as far as I'm concerned, there are only two levels of reputation: green and not green. Number of dots doesn't matter much. A lot of the largest bars do come from group silliness, which is fine. Less than green squares usually do have some cause to give the corresponding post more scrutiny, though even that's exaggerated. Most red squares here are just as exaggerated as the huge green bars. For all its pros, one of QCDN's cons has always been a sort of lynch mob mentality in running out the unpopular members - beat them down till they screw up and get banned.

This is true to an extant. People who have the red dot probably put themselves in the position of having the red dot. But for people with the one green dot like me, usually never get any rates wether its up or down. That's why i'm just going to keep mine off since like you said if you're not interested in it, not to use it.

Besides, if someone has a red dot, most people know already that they have it or they're a douche. If they have alot of green dots, they're probably popular, funny, or just post alot of useful stuff and most people already know that.

Good for the people who have the big green line of dots, but I just see everyone here as pretty equal...... unless you have a red dot.

Yeah, but we do have new people to the boards who don't know who has a bad rep around here. I've been on the boards a long time, and I don't remember everyone who has a red dot, so I wouldn't expect everyone to remember who has a red dot and who doesn't when their dots are black.

If you never got rate ups/downs, why even bother disabling it?

Black dot means their value is between 0 and 10, or disabled. Anyone with a red dot is below 0.

Also my rep is a horribly inaccurate display of the system. I technically have about 2100 rep and that's what the system believes, even though I've forced it to -1million. So yes I'm technically above 10 and thus outside the window of blackdotness.

meh the main rep I get is kage and garvin who like to spam -rep all the other rep is good shit ^^

It never crossed my mind about the new people to the board, I guess you're right. And there is nothing wrong with having one green dot. I put mine back on.

It wasn't the fact that I bothered disabling it, it was the fact that I didnt go looking for where to enable it again, because when I signed on it was automaticly turned off for me.
I took the 10 seconds to turn it on.

I also think that when people post useful info, they should get a rate up and not just for when someones funny. I never use the rate up system for a joke.

But then again, its all fun and games. I go back and fourth to much I guess.

Actually I have 394 Rep and I was black dot when I logged in this morning. I had no idea these changes were made so was kinda wondering what I did wrong.
