I'm looking for your thoughts here. This really seems like a gray area to me. Yes, it's wrong to give your kid potentially lethal weapons to try and defend himself against bullies. But suspending the kid (it's being considered) for the mother's actions seems over the top.

There was no mention in the article about what the bullies were doing to him, which I find interesting. Perhaps she gave him the weapons just in case there were bullies? Maybe fox is omitting the details on purpose?

Frankly I'm tired of hearing all this crap about bullying... but this article seemed interesting enough.

I'd agree that there are definitely some missing pieces here. Sending the kid to school with a gun, even if it's just a BB gun, is a bit much so the suspension doesn't really surprise me. I'd also imagine a BB gun is pretty damn hard to pull out on a moment's notice and isn't exactly the most practical weapon with which to defend yourself. Kinda makes you wonder what the Mom was thinking. The knife makes more sense, easy to use and conceal, quick to pull out.

Just looking at her the mom is probably an ex-junky. That being said, the article is written in such a way that it makes it sound like there were no bullies, and that she gave it to him "just in case he ever gets bullied". Whichever way is true, sending your child to school with weapons to protect himself is stupid, and only supports my initial statement of her being an ex-junky and as such probably not the brightest. It does, however, show that she cares about her child, so at least there's no neglect.

First off, the mother looks like Mick Jagger. Or a mongoloid version of David Bowie. I can't decide.

Secondly, I agree that there isn't enough info to give an accurate opinion. How big was the folding knife? What are the laws in CT regarding the appropriate, legal length of a blade? If it is within legal limits, is there a school policy against carrying one? What does the BB gun look like? Safety Orange tip, or authentic looking? CO2 or pump powered? I'd imagine it's a handgun version, otherwise it would have been spotted before he could enter the school.

Arming your 12 year old for school is just plain stupid.

I agree. Instead arm him with the knowledge to never throw the first punch, and aim for the nose if you ever have to throw one.

Most bullies are flat out cowards. They prey on the weak who they believe either won't or can't fight back. Sucker punch them in the face, breaking their nose and 99/100 times they'll never bother you again.

Exactly. It's not too often I agree with you but every once in a while.

Cowards yes most of the time, that's also why so many 'gangs' jump people instead of fight one on one, also why so many 'gangsters' carry weapons. They'd most likely meet their match too often and wouldn't want to hurt their badass image getting their faces served to them.
