I'm pretty sure it can't just be local to where I live, but in your areas, do the radio stations you listen to have the tendancy to also ruin good music through repetition?

I swear to god the same damn songs are played 20 times a day AT LEAST. And to top it out, we have ONE english radio station here. =/ And what's even funnier is we have like 3 local DJ's on that one radio station. So they must be getting sick of the same damn songs as well.... Either that or their just absolutely braindead.

Just wondering what the situation is like in other places.

It's been going on forever. I guess the delay is just natural given Japans adaptation of western music traditions extremely late.

All I know is I liked a song a week ago and now I cringe everytime it comes on.

And these are American DJs living in Japan. Well, not real DJs. Military DJs. lol.

I want to punch avril lavigne in the face right now.

I haven't laughed that hard in a while..

Unfortunately it's just about the same down here. If i want to hear something i'm SOL unless i'm near home where i pick up a radio station in chattanooga that's super decent and has a real good library..

I say burn the top 40. Charts dictate airplay, sales dictate charts, everyone downloads music now. Hence the charts are full of shit. :P

I mostly try to stick to my ipod, but I'm in dire need of new music. I really need to find some new tunes. Maybe I'll get some better speakers for my work computer and stick to pandora for a while or something.

Its not so bad with rock and oldie stations, but with pop/hiphop stations it is abismal. I swear they have 11 songs they play an hour, that just repeat in a different order every hour.

I love radio because it introduces me to new music, but sometimes it gets on my nerves how little they play.

When I used to work in a warehouse we had a stereo in there that was usually set to rock or classic rock stations. By the end of my first month working there I would start to get so pissed off at their playlists because they would play the same songs over again like every two hours. One station would play the same stupid Metallica songs at least every hour. I like Metallica, but they have better songs than the shit they would play over and over and over...

8-12 hour work days of songs I am tired of hearing really starts to get to me lol

Commercials on the radio piss me off too (same with TV) but I guess thats what you get when you aren't paying for the service.

Radio was cool when I thought I could get 101 dollars for being the 101st caller back when I was 8 years old.

Wait, they still do that....

It's not just the playlists that get old.

Radio is NOT for music.

It's all about XM Satellite Radio.

No commercials. No censorship. No talking in between songs.

I don't understand that at all.

I agree with you that it is better for oldies and classic rock. Stations no longer have as much of an agenda (reads: label dollars and bribes) to play and replay the same regurgitated SHIT over and over. The problem, though, is that they still play the same things over and over. Why don't stations play the B-sides often, and still just repeatedly spin the singles and major releases?

Saying radio is NOT for music is an overstatement, but not by much. If you want music and don't want to complain about it, spin it yourself. The only radio I have seen that does a better job at playing a wider selection of music is some genre-specific satellite and cable stations. The latter, being restricted to the vicinity of the source.

Radio is great if what you want is the top 40 per genre spun all day long. The best music is seldom in that category though. Masses of people just don't know what the best music is.

In radio's defense, they are assuming that because a song is topping the charts, people want to hear it. While this logic is not necessarily wrong, their delivery is. Instead of having a massive song library and showcasing select top-rated songs every once in a while, they pick all the 'hits' and just hit 'repeat' This practice blows.

Another problem is the people requesting these songs. They get hundreds of calls a day asking for the same songs over and over. They are just trying to appease the majority of their listeners, while alienating those of us who like variety.

Radio is awesome in small doses, like when you are driving to and from places. Anything longer than an hour and a half is usually the breaking point for songs being repeated.

The station's limited playlist is a road mostly pre-paved by dollars. The station's own "format" and agenda take a back seat. It's not necessarily what people want to hear, but rather, people hear whoever has the dollars to trade for air time.

The second paragraph is interesting. Much like any media, what is portrayed is specifically chosen. They get many many more requests than they play. When they air a request with a little girl saying, "OMG can you play my song!!!???", they chose to air that request and chose not to air other requests.

Radio is ok, if I literally have 0 tapes, CDs, MP3s, etc. on me atm. Even then, the best radio stations fall short. I'd rather drive in silence than listen to the radio more often than not. Silence is golden, and > what someone else wants to listen to.

xm is overrated

do what i do

become a music pirate and hookup your car stereo to play your ipod

that way you arent dissapointed with the music selection and you dont have to listen to these sweet talkin djs who say the same thing over and over everyday

Yeah, I play my ipod in my car as well. I trust my taste in music a lot better than theirs. They have a cool dance station here in Seattle, but it repeats stuff a lot. Probably not as bad as commercial radio (its a non-profit), but still.

The most avant-garde station I've heard was my college radio station where I DJ'd. The only problem is a good bit of the stuff you would "Never hear otherwise"... is shitty, that's why you'd never hear it. =P

But my biggest beef are the constant commercials ("over 41 minutes of music an hour!" ... really? That's... a lot?) and the #$^&#&ing DJs who aren't on talk radio shows who don't STFU. Play the songs, back-sell and pre-sell the songs, and STFU STFU STFU and play the damn songs!

If they get 400 requests for one song, and a handful for another, they are going to play the 400 song, which, more often than not, has already been on the air four times that day. I don't think its so much as them choosing only certain requests, as much as its them choosing the ones with the higher numbers.

I can't stand to drive in silence. I need music or I think too much and my driving and my sanity suffers.

Tru dat.

The requests they get are already in the repetative playlists anyway. lol
