My Account was Hacked :(

Tre, this isn't rape, its a fucking video game. Its not Jussy's fault he got hacked, but its a preventable offense. You don't go downtown big city and leave your car unlocked and unattended, you're asking for it to get ripped off. Same precedent here.

I never stated it was as serious as a rape or the other crimes I mentioned. Was just making a correlation to how a majority of this board is quick to damn the person for not building a web fortress. Don't get me wrong I'm about as far from a carebear as you can get, but I think we would be better off blaming the sorry asses stealing then the few that had some lapse in judgement. But then again, I mean exactly How "leery" is somepage or AH? Would everyone be singing a different tune if it was an official SE site or worse yet POL?

But then again the only way a majority this board thrives is off arguing, so continue on.

Trelution is bringing this to a matter of principle. No it's not rape, but what individual is to judge what crime is more serious than another? The fact is that it WAS a crime, and should be rectified. Rapists go to jail... which is not what we're pushing for with these hackers. We are pushing for a policy that will return our characters to the rightful owner..

Glad someone got what I was going for, I hope something comes from your efforts Jussy :(

I too am appalled at the folks who point the finger of blame back at the folks who were compromised. New vulnerabilities are discovered daily, and patches are released to mitigate them. If you get hit with a zero-day attack that leverages an unpatched vulnerability, you're pretty well fucked. You can have your firewall installed, use 'best security practices' or not goto 'leery' websites. But when it comes to having all your defenses up and your computer gets hit with an attack it (or you) can't defend itself against there's very little you can do. You just take the attack up the ass and, assuming you ever know you've been compromised, suck it up because you lose. Some of you idiots posting here sound computer smart; security stupid.

I'd comment to the community to be sure that if you've been compromised, do your best to change the passwords to the accounts you access from your PC. E-mail, financial, work/school, or locally used passwords (Zip files, Self decrypting archives, locked spreadsheets, etc) are all first things to hit. If it's important to you, re-secure it.

Lastly, if you love to surf teh pr0n but don't want to risk you poor little computer, download a boot disk that will load an operating system (ususally some favor of Linux) and surf your 'leery' sites that way. Your hard disk is left untouched, and if you need to save data, use an old USB drive that never goes into a computer you care about. I use Knoppix, but you may find one that works better for you.

Knoppix can be found at: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Expecting everyone who plays this game via PC to know all this is like expecting everyone who drives to know how to change their brake pads and rotors. Totally ridiculous.

I think it's more like expecting veryone to know how to wash their car. Slightly less rediculous. Everyone knows what a virus can do. Everyone also knows that they entered Credit Card information into a computer. When I look at these two things together, I see common sense pointing in the direction of learning how to protect yourself on the internet.

That being said, in no way do I think that it's anyones own fault they got hacked. If I had to place blame, I would place it on the hacker.

Yes there are things you can do to prevent things like that from happening. If you do not take the time to learn about security on your computer, then you should know that your machine is not secure, and you should be particularly careful if there is anything on your computer that others may find valuable and you don't want to lose.

The thing about it this situation is that these accounts are very important and valuable to the people who have had them stolen, but mean little to anyone else in the world. SE has told people to file a report with the police, but that would be like going to tell the police that someone broke into your car and stole your teddy bear from when you were a child, and you want them to do something about it.

Lol i love the irony of this statement "Its your fault you got hacked"

Plz tell me im not the only one who sees how contradicting that is?

This reminded me of when my truck got broken into in college. All my cd's, stereo, speakers, amps, subs, oakley sunglasses were all stolen.. I was devastated. Go to the cop shop, and all they said was "well it would probably be best to check around campus and see if anyone knows anything. Hope you get your stuff back sir, but it's highly unlikely".

You're right trippy. The cops don't give a shit about petty crimes like this.

Which only makes SE look even more stupid when they try to pass blame and tell you to file a police report. We all know the cops won't do shit.

Going to disagree with you here. Most computers come with built in security features (these exact same features that end up being targeted). Your average computer user thinks norton, not downloading porn and having a registered windows will save them. They know not to download bad emails from people they don't know and to renew their Norton subscription every year. This would be the same (within the car example) as knowing how to do basic maintenance on your vehicle. Stuff like washing it and airing up your tires. Knowing how to protect yourself from real player being exploited via visiting legitimate websites which install keyloggers on your hard drive and losing your FFXI character however I don't think would fit in the above "washing car" category. Other than that, I agree with you.

I can vouch that porn does not give you keyloggers... YOU are wrong.

Typical GM Jussy, you have to report it yourself, he said he will keep an eye on the character for suspicious activities. Oh and when asked if there was a way you can get your account back, any specific info you can give he just changed subject.

I got off the phone with a supervisor named Richard, and i was expecting to talk to a more professional person other than the regular representatives. Basically the manager is just a rep with an attitude. He offered no help and just argued with me and pointed to the same damn line about the security being the account holds job.

I'm pretty sure I'm done with fighting with them, even if i got matchuu back i wouldn't want to put my CC back on him and support them again. Fighting for this, is like fighting for a right to shop at Wal-Mart there both bull shit business and have poor customer service and really no actual benefit from giving them money. Wal-mart sells crappy products that will break in a short period of time and have no actual value, and SE takes your money and treats you like crap and will end in like a year more.

How many times has the fun been completely riped from you due to GM's lack of support? I'm actually kinda shocked ive played this long, with the RMT in sky that warp hack claim ullikummi, the constant stalling in HNM's, the bots claiming. Seems the only ppl that get banned in this game are ppl that use profanity in /sh... imo who the hell cares.

With the amount of cheating going on this game, its like trying to play one on one basketball with someone who can fly, whats the point.

Pretty much met a lot of ppl in this game, and brought already irl friendships closer but i don't need FFXI to do that. All of this is just reminding me why i try my best not to support any chain/corporate business, they lose all sense of humanity and just become robots who want money.

Not at any point in either of those posts does it say TO UZOR or UZOR:

I'm not going back and looking for when it was said that it's the hack-ee's fault for not having a secure enough computer but I've read it a few times and Jussy has gone through and done so all ready. Besides most peoples computers have basic protection via built-in firewalls and Norton, someone exploiting a security flaw in Real Player isn't really something you could see happening. Your example fails. It'd be more like if you had sex with a condom and the condom failed and you got pregnant.
It doesn't in any way fail. My comparison was that its better to be prepared, rather than sit around saying "With 9 billion people in the world, what's the odds it will happen to ME of everyone?".

My point is Uzor, that there are some things you just don't see coming. Marajade by no means seems like a computer moron and had his account hacked - the people losing their accounts aren't total idiots and had taken precautions to protect themselves against malware, viruses and yes, even keyloggers. SE is in the wrong for treating a very dedicated and loyal fanbase like shit. Legally they may be allowed to get away with it but they're tossing money down the drain. I'm thinking most people burned by this complete lack of support from SE along with the fact that they suggest that you're a cheater because your Real Player was exploited via a legitimate SE supported website, won't be picking up any new Square products anytime soon.

This kind of stuff would of never happened in WOW, blaming the person who's account was compromised and not acknowledging that there are security flaws being exploited loses you customers and respect. If you weren't saying that it's the account owner's fault then most of my posts aren't directed at you - I'm just a little disgusted by the lack of community support on this issue from some of the QCDN user base.

No. Its your fault if you get rear ended by a drunk driver, you should have seen it coming.

I mentioned this idea to the PoL rep and how if that's the case, then they should freeze my account and investigate it, because buying/selling/trading accounts is also against their policy. She said I was right, but that policy didn't allow her to freeze it, that I needed to file a report with the STF etc. Her nor a different advisor were able to connect me to a superadvisor. Go figure.

Here's the thing if you actually look on Ebay you're basically selling a note card with a bunch of letters and numbers on it not the account itself. Just because your info is on the card for your PoL etc is just a coincidence as it is not illegal to sell a note card.

If you'd have followed the thread at least a bit, you'd see it was a response to the WoTG pic stating you need to deactivate your anti-virus software during installation, and people that lack common sense forgetting to turn it on again. And those people lacking common sense, and thus anti-virus softwares.

Unless we suddenly changed topic and suddenly talk about the people in this thread that got hacked lacking common sense? Which, mind you, neither me or Jamal stated.

Realplayer

.rm was a horrible format 10 years ago when music was in .mp2s, why would anyone have Realplayer on their computers nowadays? It's just a horrible product excluding all of the security problems apparently associated with it.

Oh, and we wouldn't have rmt hacking accounts if they weren't still making good money selling gil. So you're all blaming the wrong people anyway.

In all fairness, though, some computers come with Realplayer pre-installed =/ Why I don't know.

And yes. If we didn't have people buying relic weapons with RL money, this wouldn't be a problem...
