Well, since playing on FFXI and generally not having much of a life outside of FFXI because my interests in sports means I heavily rely on nice weather, which frankly doesn't happen much up here in manchester...

So anyways, I started notice slightly blurred edges on things close up (1ft~3ft) and on stuff far away (12ft and above, but it goes back to normal after that). So I had my eyes checked and it appears I have a stigmatism and I have to wear glasses for PC work, and also reading in school.

Now, step back 10~12 months ago (I think) I had near perfect vision, although even then I had a slight stigmatism, and this was about the time I started playing FFXI.

I was just wondering if others have had any problems with prolonged computer use and problems with eyes. I always used to think my grandad was joking when he'd say "You'll end up with square eyes" but I'm seriously starting to worry that this might come true (not litterally obviously).

PS: Also, when I started, I would get migraines from the brightness of West Sarutabaruta, but this has slowly died down, and I no longer get migraines unless I'm stressed and I haven't been off my computer for a very long time.

depends on what type of screen you use. Regular ones flicker imperceptibly and can cause problems with your eyes for long periods of use. If you're having problems, concider investing in an LCD monitor. Also, never play for long in the dark. Yeah it makes stuff look better, but the light/dark contrast hurts after a while.

Yeah, I remember having a "debate" with my father on why I should invest in an LCD screen, I told him I'd rather not have Radiation & cancer in my face, but really I've only started wearing my glasses since I got my LCD screen :shok: (I have it set to 1280x1024 @ 75hz).

I make sure to have the main light in the room on, and also a small desk lamp aswell... It's very strange, hehe. I guess I'm just gonna have to wear glasses

hmmm I started developing Stigmatism @ around the age of 12... I started doing everything computer related for my teachers and parents around 10... didn't ever actually get glasses until about 3 years ago thought (and I've noticed that I see the same without my glasses as before but now I can't figure stuff out as well >.<) I think it's cause I've always spent to much time on the computer/Video Games. Eh I've been told I can get the eye surgery to fix it... but I figure it will just go bad again so Eh.

I've also heard that just staring at something so close to you for extended periods of time can cause your eyes to become near-sighted. There are exercises you can use to remedy this.

I've found that if your nearsighted and don't wear your glasses unless you really need too, i.e. while driving, then you will start to focus on things farther away more quickly. now I only wear them when I'm going through the guide on my cable or driving and I can see much better than I could when I wore my glasses all the time.

I learned of my stigmatism at the age of 16, when I tried to get contacts. It's a natural degredation that occurs in the eyes, Blabj. Don't let anyone tell you that video games cause your eyes to go bad. Sports can kill you. You could get tackled, smash a bone, and walk with a limp for the rest of your life.

I've been playing video games since I was four years old. I developed the need for glasses around fifth grade. This was the exact same time my father needed glasses in his life. It's genetics, not outside influences. (Though, I know you like to stare at the sun for extended periods of time. Seriously toots, quit that)

I get Eye Strain a lot recently, now also. I noticed this about 8 months ago, but I hate Doctors, so I'll just stay in my dark room.

Heh.. Try spending 18 consecutive ACTIVE hours in Valkurm. After all this time a friend /telled me.. I looked down at my keyboard (I was typoing and it bugs me) and.... I couldnt make out half the keyboard.. it was like a "blind spot" but... the WHOLE right side was just.. gone.
Stigmatism is natural.. snow blind still sucks @.@

lol I remember the first time I went into valkurm...I had to turn away it was so damn bright. I first started on a reg. monitor and later switched to LCD, which has made a huge difference. When I used to go hardcore playing for a few days though, I could feel my eyes hurting from the screen....lol definitely a bad thing.

I've been very lucky so far in my lifetime. I've been blind as a bat since 3rd grade. Started wearing contacts at age 17. Now these were the old school kind (hard lenses, they didn't have soft lenses back then). Anyway, fast forward to a few years later, and they came out with soft. I'm nearsighted and have been wearing soft since about age 22 or 23.

So now you fast forward another 20 years. That's another 20 years of being on a computer. I'm 44 now and have been very very worried about whether I was gonna finally have to have bifocals the next time I had my eyes checked. So I went to the eye doctor about a month ago. Miracle of miracles I not only do not have to wear bifocals but my eyes got better. My prescription is less than it was 2 years ago. Needless to say it's a big relief that I've gotten at least a 2 year reprieve. I'm not supposed to go the eye doctor any less than 2 years.

I do believe part of the reason I've been so lucky is because I never ever play, read the forums, whatever in the dark. I always have had good lighting.

Good lighting ftw! still say nothing can prepare you for fire weather in the dunes ><
But always keep a light infront AND behind you if you can, makes it bearable.

No lcd here ;;so its not cool.. plus contacts.. my eyes hate me

Well my eyes are horrible and continue to get worse. I am 21 now and have being wearing glasses since i was 4. When i turned 8 i started wearing contacts and i have been wearing them ever since. It seems like everytime i go in my eyes have gotten worse. My current problem is that i am starting to have trobule reading w/o glasses also so i think i am going to have to go to monovision contacts soon. One for nearsighted one for farsighted for those of you that dont know. My current perscription is -8.00 on my contacts. I just hope my eyes stop changing before i am no longer a canidate for lasiks.

But thats y i play on my PS2 bigger screen and i can sit a reasonable distance away. I can sit at my computer for like 1hr normally but i can sit at my TV for days.

Yah, that's even worse than me Deja. Mine was -6.50 (right eye) and -6.75 (left eye).

I also want Lasiks so bad. I would love to be able to wake up in the morning just one more time before I die and be able to see without grabbing for my glasses. I haven't been able to do that since 3rd grade.

Thanks for all the posts guys, I think it's really interesting some of the different theorys on eye strain and such, and it's really great to read all your posts and know that I'm not on my own (per sé, a hell of alot of people wear glasses)

I was also pondering if traits in eye sight could be inherited from your parents, both my parents wear glasses, my father all the time. My grandfather also wears glasses, but this could also be due to the fact that he's considerably older than most people I'm refering to. I guess next time I have biology at school I'll ask my teacher, I'm sure she'd love to tell me more about ageing and stresses placed upon the eyes from prolonged computer use, etc.

Thanks for the replys ^^
