Yes folks it was definetly Mardi Gras time in full swing when we stepped off that train. and what we saw, and in some cases didnt see, remined me clearly that NOLA still has a ways to go to get back on its feet like it was pre-Katrina. im not quite sure how elph felt when we got there but for me, DAMN IT FELT GOOD TO BE HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!! we got to see the signature parades we wanted and my family got to see what they wanted, us.
my mother picked us up from the station and first thing she ask was where we wanted to go for dinner. made the opening family rounds and off to Five Happiness (excelent chineese place). then it was Shoguns the next day(favoite japaneese resturant). Nasya brought me there when we took a break from setting up my problematic account
. nice to know many of my old favorites were still there. also Katrina has given the local shops insperation. in the form of hilarious shirts that have themes such as "Girls Gone Wild" with drawn hurricanes named Rita and Katrina, and the real meaning of F.E.M.A.(Fix Everything My Ass) or the "FEMA Evacuation Plan-'Run Bitch Run". on of my personal favorites says "i sayed in New Orleans durring Katrina and all i got was this shirt, a new truck and a plasma screen TV". i even found a new store Shyrra would sell his soul to work at. durring Margi Gras face painting is quite populer. well this shop takes a more "revealing" angle. its called "Paint your Tits". i'll give you 2 guesses what they do there
. you can never keep NOLA down for long.
i finally got to see my house. my dad long since gutted the place and treated the wood and all that. but the took pictures of what it looked like when they first returned. lived in that house for 20 years, about, and those images were totally unfamilier to me. my old neigborhood took some getting used to as well. elph and i walked around it and i was amazed at what i saw. apparently its a new city ordinance that the houses around the lake & Levee areas have to be raised in some form. but some people went WAY overboard. and many others got ripped off. my mom told us about a house that was torn down after it was raised. they put cement pillers only around it's outer rims and the house started to bend like a "V". others are so high they look like they will blow over before they have to worry about rising water. i finally got to see the 9th ward with my own eyes. well whats left of it anyway. its almost an open plain with a street network in it. but despite everything i saw its clear that the city is slowly recovering. and gives me reason to smile inspite of all the negative reports i hear.
now that we're back in the dull town of jamestown, ND i'll be back to my old gaming self. C'ya round people.
