I don't understand what use you could possibly have for the IME plugin in the first place. It's there for people who actually have some basic understanding of the Japanese language ... not people who want to pretend and play.
At any rate, in order to get the IME plugin to work, you would have had to have changed your default non-Unicode language to Japanese. In some applications, this can sometimes replace some of your ascii codes with other characters. My backslash, for example is fine in most applications ("\"), but it is replaced by the yen symbol in Windows Explorer paths, AND in FFXI ... anything that doesn't use Unicode.
Is this the problem you're describing? The first order of business to remedy that is to stop screwing around with Japanese input, and go into your "Regional and Language Options" under the Windows Control Panel. Click on the Advanced tab, and set the non-Unicode language back to English.
The actual Windows IME itself is fine to stay, but once again, it's not going to work for you in FFXI without switching your non-Unicode language, and there's really no good reason for you ... BLAZN ... to want toy with Japanese input in game at all ... aside from trickery.
