You know, I may not agree with some of the points you were trying to make, but I was thinking on the lines of something similar to this. I was online last night, and I got to talk to Kateverlasting about the attitudes, and complete lack of courtesy a lot of the people have at times. Of course, me saying attitudes, and lack of courtesy are the nicest things I could think of, because I could use some really "colorful" language to describe some peoples behavior's.

The thing is, you have no idea who the person is on the other end of that keyboard, could be a kid, a teen, a middle aged person, a young adult, whatever, you don't know. They could also be one of the nicest people IRL, but because the have this manufactured environment, and manufactured character, they change. Sometimes, just being on forums, in virtual realities, etc, and not debating or discussing things face to face, gives the person a sense of protection, a cover, a way not to be tracked down. They act all super bad ass, or reall nasty, what ever you want, and there is no punishment, no reciprocation.

You know, they can't get yelled at, grounded, suspended from school, fired from work, or get their asses kicked because they are behind a shield, that shield being there computer and the internet. Makes me think of how a lot of the people that are complete jerks would if they had been confronted face to face by the person they were ripping on. It is too bad that some people only get a spine when they know they are safe.

LMAO.. anyone who has ever played a mmo knows that little warning is there only as a safeguard for SquareEnix. They of all people want you to spend all your time playing this game.. hell or at very least subsribe to the game. They want your money, and once they have it, they could give a rats ass whether you spend 10 minutes a day in the game or spend your entire life there, as long as they're getting your money they dont mind.

This little warning is there so that if you do happen to lose all your friends, get fired from your job.. ect ect.. and whatever.. you can't sue SE because of it.. they after all have a nice little warning, that is perfectly visable to anyone each and every time you start up FFXI.

There are warnings like this on every MMO, cept maybe the first.. and I can garentee someone somewhere got sued and lost.. and then these were put in games as a minor but working failsafe agianst those cases.. which I will simple call "Loser Cases". Because anyone that does actually lose their job and alienates themselves from their friends and family because they spend every waking hour on a mmorpg and do nothing else.. is quite frankly, a loser.

This is true, we discussed some things on Teamspeak for a quite awhile last nite. Guess mebbe that is another difference with our LS vs. some of the others. We actually do speak to each other pretty much on a daily basis. It's hard to explain, but imho I think it makes us a tad more human to each other. To actually hear the persons voice, joke and laugh with them, discuss issues, yada yada really does make it a bit more real vs. just virtual.

I don't know, maybe that's why we're more courteous to each other also.

i try not to be rude in game, and my personality from irl doesnt change much in the game.. however, i am an extremely sarcastic and rowdy individual, and i have offended people from time to time without intending to.. BUT, when i see that they are offended I try my hardest to let them know that i wasnt trying to offend them, that its just my nature to be dry and sarcastic. some people understand, some people dont. most people shoot back at me, and we have fun flaming each other in that i dont really mean it way. its hard to convey emotions through type and text and emoticons. some people can take a little dry humor, some cant. most of the ones who cant i noticed are younger than me.

i treat most people in the game as i would treat my friends, brutally honest when i think someone is an idiot or screwing up, and try to help them as much as i can so long as i am not busy myself. if someone cant take me how i am in the game its their problem and not mine, and im sorry that our personalities dont clash, but no one in real l ife is going to get along with everyone else in real life either.

i just dont bend over backwards to get along with everyone in the game, just as much as i dont like to bend over backwards in real life. im sure theres people out there who think im a jerk or have me blacklisted.. but w/e. i dont let it bother me.

no one in my linkshell really has a problem with me because im in there all the time and they know how i am. if i get too rude no one hesitates to tell me to shut the fuck up, and i do have enough respect for all of them to do just that. i noticed that in party a lot of people can take me wrong, but then again, thats why i have a static of people that im used to playing with now and who know me..

i think my oonly problem is when i drink and play the game, lol.. then even i have to step back and put the game down for a bit because of the way i get. so if ive offended anyone in the game, im sorry, cause id idnt mean it, unless you're a tool, then i did.

as far as this board goes, i dont really care. its a messageboard. i never take anyone seriously on one of these things just because its simply that - a messageboard. i can write what ever the fuck i feel like it for five minutes, go back and read and be like, oh, i didnt really mean to say that, but people are already on your ass so who cares. you cant win in these situations. its just kind of entertaining at times and a good way to kill time at work and to find out whats goign o nwtih other people

I knew Johnathan (Fatal1ty) in real life, and met him several times at tournaments around the world.

I used to play CS Professionally and went o Texas, Korea etc etc to win money with a well known CAL-Invite team. I know Johnathan hasn't won that much money for a fact... I dont think he has even broken 500k yet... maybe if you include merchandice.

the reason people argue over the internet is because while it is "just a game", the players you are interacting with are people. If someone is a jerk to you online it is the same as them being a jerk to you irl... which is why i don't really like it when people say it is "only a game, i don't need to take it seriously".

The fact is it is a community of people, just because we are represented by pixels and numbers does not mean that we do not expect to be treated well. Furthermore if someone is unkind or inconsiderate, the emotions that evokes are real. Perhaps you are able to remove yourself from the real aspects of the game, but i am not. If some jerk tries to cope a feel while i walk past them irl i get pissed. If some jerk in game does something stupid and wastes my time, i get pissed. When a friend moves away irl i get sad, if a friend in game goes away without leaving contact info, i get sad. Why? because these are REAL people we are playing with everyday. I talk to many of them online when we are not ingame, i call some of them, i know many of their real names. Like kat sad, at least among my friends everyone is very human, very real, and that makes the jerks online who I interact very real too.

You can confront the person in game, but that does little... and you can confront them on forums like this, which does a lot more. They cannot blist you for talking about them and not see what you write here. Also, you let the rest of the community, who are all people, know about someone who was at least cruel to you in a the game. So i disagree, it does accomplish something. It helps people feel better about the pixilated event that effected their real emotions, and it warns others of a possible bad apple in the server. This isn't a flame Black, its just a reply.
