Hello everyone ^_^. Now before we go jumpin' on ol' Reya's back about how much the job sucks or what in the world PUP is suppost to do, or my favorite, You lvl'd DRG and now PUP?! What's wrong with you girl?!
The story:
I'm trying to finish off my blm to add a little bit more choices in my end game activies. BLM is currently 72 (yay) I love WHM it will still be my number one job but I wanted to give myself a few more choices end game incase for some unknown reason we had a lot of healers at something. My third 70+ job is DRG which has been retired for almost 5 months now so I can finish maging it up. Well... anyways back on topic! Last night, the night before thanksgiving everyone who could be online was online. It was crazy. All 70+ camps were packed even sky. With only getting 4k EXP in about 2 hours I decided to call the party off. I was playing in the same room as my boyfriend, Raes and noticed a PUP in his party (Curse you Rappa!) and thought, well I still have my lvl 30 PUP gear I might pick that up again for fun. I flag up and less than 5 min later invite! We were the only party in GC, 34-37 party. Party make up was: RDM/BRD/BST/NIN/PUP/THF. Needless to say we got chain 4 no prob. It was fun getting back into the job. About an hour into the party our NIN D/Cs and does not come back. There are no tanks lfp, so I think, what about me tanking? Sure my gear sucks def wise, but, I bring two sets of gear with me on PUP. The first is mage set incase I need to sub WHM which including my merits and mid-30 gear gives me 157 MP base w/o food. The second is evasion gear. PUP also gets an awesome Job Trait called Evasion Bonus.
I swap out my frame, Stormwalker Body and Valoredge head pop on mana converter, dmg. gauge and a few other mage parts and I'm ready to go.
I tell our RDM not to heal me unless I hit critical orange or red HP since Pama (my automation) is a free source of MP.
Why PUP rocked as tank: (Bats were IT btw on PUP/WAR)
1) Voking for the pull and voking again when the mob got back to camp ensured that I could hold hate and with THF support, it was gravy.
2) Guard. Another nice thing about us is our ability to guard DMG unlike most tanking jobs.
3) Puppet curing does not pull hate. Every 20-30 seconds I'm given a cure III by Pama. Alternating between Flashbulb + Cure III I am able to dodge most attacks when cure is on cool down. With Pamama as main healer our RDM's MP never dropped below 170 which is awesome for that lvl with only a bard for our second support job.
We continued our chain 4 streak with no prob and I think only one close call in the last hour the party stayed together. I also got lvl 37! yay!!
Some thoughts of PUP:
I think the job is a jack-of-all trades sort of thing. We're pretty avarage in most things and we might not fit that slot perfectly but we make one hell of a sub-in.
PUP tanking in merit parties? Chaining Ts is quick at 75, especially in merit parties. Imagine a tank with practically an unlimited mana pull and a DD mowing through Tough mobs.
Maybe I'm getting a bit over my head on this because this was my first time tanking with this job. I had a blast and I want to continue to look into the specifics of this job and continue to find little tweaks to help people see past the "PUP sux" thing.
