So I have heard many people say how long a playstation 2 lasts, well mine just took a turn for the worse. I have had it since december of 2001. I am hoping someone would have a great idea to fix the problem so I can continue my happy gaming... so here are my symptoms....

I left my ps2 on for somewhere around 10 hours straight, which isnt out of the norm. I was crafting on a mule, checking ah on main char, doing normal day to day game stuff, when my screen started to get distorted. It started off with color changing then progressed to screen bouncing and finially to the point where I can faintly make out where my char is on the screen. Color is still visiable, but I can not make out much more. This morning I turned it on and it worked fine for about 5 mins then went right back to total distortion.

So if anyone has some great ideas on how to fix this unit without sending it to Sony for 45 bucks plus shipping(and not being able to play for at least a week) let me know!!!

If I were you I'd just take out the HD and buy a new PS2. They're pretty cheap now.

My PS2 is out of service as well, mostly because I'm missing the power cord, but it had stopped recognizing the HDD, but would play other games. I know it's not the HDD because it recognized it in another PS2, but wouldn't start up POL.

But most likely I'd say it's a problem with the AV Cable, check that. It might have been damaged, or shorted out and need to be replaced. My PS2 was on almost constantly, so I don't think the time on for yours would have effected it too much.

Oh, and Acutie, can't play FFXI on the new PS2s :/

Can you install the hard drive on one of those new slim ps2's? I looked into that option and have only seen slim ps2's for sale!

No the slim ones cant take the Hd :9, You'd have to find a older model.

Nope, they don't make the old PS2's anymore, and there's no space for it in the new Slim PS2's, so basically you're shit out of luck. That's why I bought a laptop since I don't know if my PS2 can be fixed or not. I haven't gotten a power cord, so I can't test it. But yeah, like I said, check the AV Cord.

Before you go and buy a new PS2, check to see that the HDD will even RUN in a different PS2. I've had my HDD in two different PS2 and no luck on getting POL to startup. I mean, it'll start showing the beginning screen with the music, but never to the actual "Login" part.

Umm, there are game stores that sell used systems. They are far from uncommon so I wouldn't say "shit out of luck".

I haven't come across any in my area, plus I'm just making a generalization, no need to critisise my wording.

Before you go through all that.. first things first.. get a new AV cord and try it. Your cord may have a short or wiring problem. It may or may not fix it.. but it'd be the cheapest thing to try first.

Failing that.. you can always find an older PS2 model on Ebay or probably even Amazon.

took the av cord from my roomates slim ps2, seems to work like a charm!! omg thank you guys so much, that just saved me all kinds of troubles!

I shipped my PS2 to Sony for exchange. When I got the new one I had the same problem. I found out you have to reformat the hard drive using the utility disk before it will work in the new box, otherwise it fails the DNAS check. After reformatting and reinstalling FFXI everything works fine.

I'm desperately trying to AVOID reformatting, because I have some important things in my POL mail that I need. I got a new power cord tonight and it works, now I can't find the HDD Utility disk X_X;
