Surfing around today, I discovered MST3K head writer Mike Nelson has a site called Rifftrax with MP3 movie commentary track downloads. Nelson is on all of them, with Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (Brain Guy) on some. They cost $3.

I bought Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace and Night of the Living Dead. They also have Road House, Point Break, X-Men, The Matrix and several others. Streaming preview clips are available under the "more info" button for each movie.

As a longtime MST3K fan, I couldn't resist passing this along to anyone else with warm memories of the show.

damn they did star wars 1 too!? oh well i was first...i did that whole movie like many years ago on a vhs system...ill be restoring it this month.
Id like to see their version tho.

Holy crap, this could be the next best thing to an actual MST3K ^^

How did you like it Hal? I saw the site linked from Wired (I think), but wasn't sure how funny it'd be. Do they have Tom Servo and Crow? I would love to hear the three in action again, but for some reason I think that the copyrights (or whatever) are held by someone else...

They're not in character or anything; they're just riffing on the movie as themselves. Of the two I bought, The Phantom Menace was the best. I'm not sure if it's because Mike was solo for Night of the Living Dead or because the Star Wars one came along later after he'd worked out the kinks and he had a riffing partner. I plan to buy the others later.

The Phantom Menace was worth it for two things: making fun of the the constant Chinese stereotyping every time the Trade Federation idiots were on the screen -- "You get General Tsao's chicken now!" -- and Kevin yelling at Liam Neeson to sell all his Star Wars crap on eBay so he could afford to fix their ship on Tatooine.

Holy damn, thanks so much for this! Been a huge MST3K fan since my friend showed me his VHS tapes, and then my former boss was a huge fan, he would bring over his DVD's and we would play it in front of customers.

Mitchell, Overdrawn at the Memory, Cave Dwellers, Final Sacrifice, etc.

We had so many running gags thanks to that show, I'll fully support anything that these guys are doing, it was one of the funniest programs ever.

"Someone forgot to turn off the rotating fat ass!"

There's an electronic voice called "Disembaudio" who says a line with the movie every ten minutes or so to make sure your CD/MP3 player is still in sync with the movie.

I plan to buy the rest, although that's going to mean picking up copies of those movies. This is probably the only way I'll ever sit through Top Gun, which bored me so much I walked out of the theater when it was first released. The volleyball scene wasn't enough to sustain my interest.

I miss that show so much.. they need to bring it back :\

Welp, I put the movie list into my Tivo and I got 4 set to record this week. Star Wars Phantom Menace, The Grudge, Point Break, and Roadhouse. I think my Tivo ask me "Are you sure?" when I told it to record Roadhouse...

I can't wait to try them out this weekend!!! :D

just a heads up, if you go to their forums and click on upcoming, they're doing a Lord of the Rings riff, they have a preview clip streaming there, sounds hilarious, check it out, comes out November 22.

Thread necro, but for a worthy cause.

I don't know if anyone's been following the RiffTrax site and partaking of its wonders since I first posted about it, but they're preparing to riff on "the manliest movie ever made" next week. Yes, that's right... 300 is on the menu.

Let the hilarity ensue. This is SPARTAAAAAAAAAA!

Cmdrfly: Jesus Christ Monkey Balls.

I loved the Rifftrax for Eragon.
