I work at a group home, with boys ages 8-13. I need a reasonably short anime series (8-14 episodes) That is both apropriate and not-crappy.

Plan to run it august 1st, so have time to throw up ideas.

Unfortunately I don't think there are series for 8-13 year olds that short. The shortest series in that demographic would be around 26-50 episodes. This is what I will suggest though.

King of Braves GaoGaiGar. It is 49 episodes of win. No swearing, small bit of nudity right at the very end, not for very long, epic plot, likeable characters, fantastic robots, and more robots, which leads to robots beating the ever loving crap out of each other. Oh and the good guys robots are powered by COURAGE! The animation is great, the music is epic win and the voice actors are believable.

Bearing in mind though, only the first half of the series is dubbed/subbed hybrid box sets, the 2nd half of the series is subbed only, but really, subs all the way for this one as it is win. And it is a VERY flashy series, so watch in a well lit room.

Also, this is the opening!

Should show them Higurashi. It's totally a kids show and it's short.

Have you thought about maybe showing them some anime movies? There's a ton of those out there that that age group could watch and hopefully enjoy.

I would suggest just about any of Miyazaki's works. Also pretty much any Inuyasha or Tenchi movie would work. However, they might not understand the characters as well. If this is a problem, I'd stick to Miyazaki's movies. Another movie suggestion would be Origin: Spirits of the Past. It's a good movie and there's nothing inappropriate about it.

As far as anime series, maybe Ah! My Goddess. would work, but it is 20+ episodes and has some semi mature themes at times, and by mature I mean relationship stuff and occasional alcohol usage. Jyu-Oh-Sei: Planet of the Beast King might also be another good series, it is short at 11 episodes, but I can't remember if there's swearing or not, nor can I remember if there is nudity.. however, I really don't remember there being anything like that. It is a very good series, action and a good story.

That's really nice! Is it community work?

Fine, don't trust me on Higurashi but you can trust me on Elfen Lied. It's got good life lessons and is okay for kids.

That'd work better if I haddn't seen it. And you KNOW I've seen it. At the "You watched it with me" level.

Hey, I'm just trying to help. Not my fault you're rejecting all my suggestions.

Higurashi is also lengthy.

Here are some suggestions on my end, I'll try to make only appropriate ones content wise but I haven't seen any of these for a long, long time.

Amatsuki

Black Blood Brothers

Ayakashi (not the old school one) : This one is battle heavy but I don't remember it bein' that violent.

Asu no Yoichi! : Has a decent amount of fan service, nothin' to bizzare for a teenager though. It's also really funny and has a decent message.

Rideback: Very, very good anime about fightin' against corrupt politics but may be to serious. It's not violent but it's also not funny or anything at all, ever.

Viper's Creed: Pretty much like the above but battle heavy. It's mostly mech type fightin' though. I don't remember it bein' gory at all and I figure if a teenager can grasp the story they'd find it very enjoyable.

Sengoku Basara: Very teen appropriate. Has a lot of good in it but due to the period it may teach kiddos that fightin' is actually a good thing.

These are all 12-14 episodes long. You'd also have to stream them though, except for Black Blood Brothers which has been licensed here and complete. I'm not sure if parents of pre-teens would enjoy their kids watchin' these though, but I'd show them all to my Nephew if he was in that age range. You just never know these days. Then again, due to the circumstances, they may not have parents for all I know and have been through far worse already in which they could stand to learn a few things from all of these.
