I need to buy a birthday gift for a going-to-be 14 year old boy. Now I'm pretty hip, but teenage boys are strange creatures and I was hoping someone here with a younger and more masculine point of view could help me out.

In the past it's always been like this:

Me: What do you want for your birthday?
Rugrat: I want game ________ for my PS2
Me: okay (goes out and buys game _______, puts into a care package with a can of ranch style beans, teriyaki beef jerky and dr pepper, and sends it off to PA) lol don't ask about the beans.

Anyway I was really hoping to surprise him this year, he already has an IPOD, he doesn't have a WII yet, but aunt Shannie isn't going to buy him one of those, I'm leaving that to his dad. He likes RPG games, he has a DS and a Ps2.

I was looking at these:

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=27514&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=259&iSubCat=286&iProductID=27514&cm_mmc=PMD-_-Gifts.com-_-Product_Terms-_-Adidas_Customizable_Adi_Color

But I'm just not sure if those are cool or geeky. I was thinking about spending $100 to $150. Please help me be an uber cool aunty, I have no clue what young guys are into these days.

I'd have a great idea if he wasn't family....

The shoes look fine to me though, they come with spray paint that includes green, black, and red, I could work with that

You can spray paint those? Whoa. That's pretty cool.

Though, I probably wouldn't get him something like that if he's only 14. Not to say he isn't artistic, but I'm just seeing those getting spraypainted a very ugly color in glee & then never worn again. I think they're cool, but probably a bit out of a 14 year olds range.

Personally, if he likes RPGs nab him Rogue Galaxy for the PS2, or maybe Pheonix Wright: Ace Attourny for the DS. Those are pretty fun.

If your set on getting him some cool clothes, Old Navy is having some nice sales right now.

Well I'm not that young and definatly not masculine but I do have two step bros around that age. They tend to ask for.. video games, trading cards (yugioh or something, I wouldn't recommend those) or gaming consoles. When in doubt of what to buy my younger siblings I tend to go the gift card route.

Those shoes do look pretty cool though. Hmm..only other thing I would recommend is browse a gaming store site and find a game or two you think he'd like or shoes and a gift card to say.. gamestop or something so he could pick himself out a video game. Or since you mentioned he has an ipod, there are gift cards for the itunes store you could also grab up. Think they start at $10. He could buy himself some songs for his ipod.

About all I can think of. If I come up with anything else I'll post it.. hope it helps a little. :/ I hate buying gifts for people so I always tend to just buy gift cards.

*Edit* I also use gifts.com to browse around for stuff for people. You can pick categories, such as teen, then sub categories, video gamer and it'll bring up different things a person that fits them might like. Might be an option to check out.

Rogue Galaxy could be a winner, it's a great RPG, action-ish battle system, not a real complicated storyline so a 14YO can appreciate it, probably. That'd get my vote.

Does he have a PC? C&C3 all the way! If he likes baseball, get great seats to a game.

Hey now, I was playing and understanding RPG storylines when I was like 7 or however old I was when I played my first FF, couldn't have been older than 10. However old I was when IX came out.

Anyways, get him a quarter of happy grass, although that's difficult to ship. Or get him a CD, any of these bands work: Metallica, Tool, Disturbed, System of a Down, Pantera, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Korn, White/Rob Zombie, Godsmack, Mushroomhead, Rammstein, Static-X, Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, ACDC, Slayer, Testament, Ra, My Dying Bride, Lamb of God, Apocalyptica, Arch Enemy, Cradle of Filth...probably a few more I'm forgetting. Don't get him anything shitty though.

I'd highly suggest avoiding clothes of any kind, I remember when I was a kid everything I got, I hated, no matter how cool other people thought it was.

In the way of games, Rogue Galaxy is probably your best bet.
The jerky and Dr. P is a winning combo btw, kudos.

Porn.

Gay porn, with a letter saying it's what he asked for, so when he opens it infront of his folks, hilarity ensues.

If u buy a game for the DS the Final Fansty Game is a winner or the Rogue Galaxy, clothes always work for a kid his age but u know how it is picking out clothes for them that is where a gift card comes in handy. I think gift cards are get to buy for kids that age cause something they are hard to buy for or maybe get him some type of thing that he can use w/ his IPOD like a player or something like that he can put it on and play it in his room just an idea.

If he has a PS2, one cannot go wrong with Guitar Hero II. I don't think there is a kid on the planet who wouldn't want that.

Depending on his sense of humor and such, he might like Disgaea 2...great RPG, though its got a bit of toilet humor, and dunno if you'd want him hearing some of the jokes. ^^;

Jelly of the month.

Get him socks. Kids LOVE socks.
A woman I work with had her son ask her for underwear for his 7th birthday.

At 14 he's starting to check out chicks, get him some clothes that might help him snag a young lady, or some decent cologne so he doesn't wear that nasty Axe crap around.

Does he have FFX for the PS2 yet? You could always get him hooked on the wonderful world of Final Fantasy....I am sure his parents would love you for that. ;P

DOes he have a favorite band? My little bro is a bit older than that (19ish I think....God I am old) and goes nuts when I find him old school or rare Tenacious D shirts/guitar books/paraphanalia on Ebay.

That's the gift that keeps on giving.

Agreed. Clothes are for parents and grandparents, not cool aunts.

Neche said GH2, and I agree. I can't think of something a teenage boy would want more. (Hookers, but that's probably the only thing.)

Concert tickets would be pretty cool too.

You bitch that was going to be my contribution! <3

I agree with Mish. Also they have started reproducing Disagea I for a short period of time. Get it while it's hot. I'm greatly looking forward to it myself as i've heard great things about it.

So there you go Disagea I & II. Gogo cool aunt.

buy him FFXI and see what the hell happens=P

Here's a question, what games does he already have for his PS2? I'm going to say either Rogue Galaxy or FFXII are your best bets for good games, but in case he already has those, I would also suggest FFIII for the DS.

You could always go the gift card route if your really worried, but if you could post some of the games he owns it should give most people an idea of what he likes to play.
