I'm staying at a friends house, he's out of town right now though. He has a PW on the thing, but even when I put on the PW it won't allow me to access the net (even though the bars on my airport light up). I have used the net at his house before, but he had to do some wierd thing (looked like a programming window) on my comp first, anyone have any clue what that is, and what I need to do to be allowed to join the network?
What that was, was most likely the BSD core of your MacOS, and he was attaining your MAC address (It's like your IP address, but specific to your network device). With that MAC address he can make it that your computer is allowed to access his router. If you are on a Windows machine, he probably opened up a Command Prompt and got your MAC address for the same reason.
Your computer can only access the network if it has the password, the WEP key for that password, and proof that it's YOUR computer I.E. your network card's MAC address in the router's database.
In super ultra simple terms:
You want to get in a dance club. You need to be on the guest list, you need an invite, and you need a password.
And right now you're the loser outside trying to figure which one you're missing.
Resetting your friend's router will have several undesired results:
1) you will annoy the crap out of your friend.
2) you can compimise the entire security of the network.
3) you still probably don't know how to set up the router after it's been wiped to let you on, depending on how the router defaults.
Your best bet:
Grab a network cable (for anywhere form 75 cents for 3' to 14 bucks for 20'), make sure it's not a cross-over cable (usually red), and plug one end into your computer, and the other end into the router in any of the ports labled 'LAN'. Poof, problem solved.
