so, I like snooping through .dat files. Don't we all?

While I was having a really boring time I was trying a function I haven't tried before... well, I tried it, never learned how to use it untill today.

So, anyway. I recognized most areas, untill I found one I didn't recognize. With what looks like a new town;

After some more exploring in the what I think is newly-discovered zone, I also found what looks like a giant... thingy.

After even more exploring I finally figured out what it was! a railroad! I didn't find this out untill I actually saw the train itself

Is it just me, or is that a new zone, and perhaps a new transportation method?

It's been found before, people say it was simply some textures and an area that never got used in the final version of the game. Or who knows? Maybe they plan to use it. Doubt it though. It's probably some unused files.

Many games have content installed that ends up not being used in the final version. Take KOTOR 2 for example. I've read people looking at the files on there and finding alternate endings and lots of other things.

I'm thinking that it's an area that was planned, but just not used and got packed up on the installation discs. Although, if it was installed after the game was installed, via FFXI patch, then maybe it will used eventually. Look at the file that contains that area and see when the "Last modified" date is, and try to remember when you first installed the game.

I just checked. I installed this game back in October 2003
earliest changed file I could find was from november 4th 2003
ROM0\0\28.dat was edited July 30th 2004

dunno though =/ it's too advanced for this game.

My ROM and ROM 2 files were last modified on Feb 25, 2005, I installed the game December 2003. Anyways, I was screwing around with it and found these:
