I've been thinking a lot over the course of months how new jobs could effect the game, and for the sake of not starting an unintelligent debate I've refrained. In my own ponderings I've had trouble justifying most of my ideas, with one exception.
One of the jobs I've often thought about would be a Rune Knight or Shrine Knight... they've been around in a few of the Final Fantasy games.
I'm just pitching the job for it's merits, so read on with interest/disinterest:
[What does it do?] *I.E.- Jumps, absorbs, special attacks, magic, ect.
The Rune Knight would be blessed with mage abilities while it is a melee. Much as a Paladin is benefitted healing and Dark Knights their absorbs, this job would benefit from Red Mage abilities.
[How would it be different?]
The Rune Knight would specialize in normal and great swords, and would be able to utilize en, bar, and other spells that melee don't normally use.
[Why would someone take a Rune Knight?]
Well, the basic level distribution of abilities might work like a Dragoon with an attack up bonus, and then an accuracy bonus following. Later on though, they would get abilities making them more party friendly, the first one being Blitz at level thirty-seven when jobs like Paladin, Ninja, and Dark Knight get critical spells.
Basically, Blitz would be an ability by many names in Final Fantasy games. It would take the difference between you maximum health, and you current health, and then deal that as damage to your enemy.
The point of the Blitz spell, as well as eventually stoneskin and refresh as well *Yes, I'm nuts O_O* in later levels, would be to make a melee fighter that had a specific spellcasting role in the party. Effective use of Stonekin and Blitz could compensate for not being able to match up to other DD, as well as change the way certain moves such as Trick Attack and Jump are used.
Being able to jerk the hate from a Paladin and not get dropped/lose shadows/have to shed hate would play a part in skillchains, pt's with thieves and ninjas, and even provide an emergency method to gain hate.
[Wait, a DD that can cast Refresh and... Blitz? Are you mad?!]
Not really, I don't think anyone would argue that there are currently only TWO refresh whores in the game RDM/BRD. The multi-facet problem I have with that is that it creates not only a dependency on those two jobs, but also leaves less room for melee.
**Not to mention all the people who can get away with the War/Whm equivelent of Mage'dom because of it.**
Also, the point of the job would be a melee that has to take part in all the roles of the group. The Rune Knight in a party with a Thief, Paladin, Black Mage, White Mage, and ect would have to work with each of the members in a very efficient manner.
[Everyone would want to play this job then... over-powered.]
Take a Rdm/Blm that knows how to burst well. It fits the same role, it just hits the mob instead of enfeebling it.
...I myself am afraid I've presented the idea in a poor way. I may just like it and not see it's flaws. Regardless, it was driving me crazy, figured I'd share it with everyone. Please, just take it easy one me, as I could have fetched my more hair-brained schemes on you all.
*sigh*
