FFXI

Just a general heads up for owners of Vista notebooks with GeForce 8000 series built-in graphics, like mine -

I got fed up with sticking with the old 169.17 set just for FFXI, as it has issues in some newer games, notably Team Fortress 2 which I've been playing a bit lately.

I gave the newest set on laptopvideo2go.com, 185.20, a try, and they're working beautifully in FFXI with my GeForce 8600M GS. I'd imagine they probably work great for all 8000 series GeForce chips. Seems nVidia may have finally got their act together with their drivers.

What's cool is nvidia just now started supporting laptop chipsets with their drivers straight off the website. Before you had to go through the laptop vendor (without modifying the driver yourself) to get the drivers, which were pretty much out of date. I'm assuming that's why nvidia decided to start supporting them themselves.

About to test it on my 8400M GS chipset, will post results

well it works, but I don't notice much of a diference between the old drivers i was using and the new ones. It still has this really annoying "pause" where everything freezes for two seconds when I tab between XI and anything else.

I mostly pointed it out not for FFXI's benefit but so you can have an actual up to date driver for OTHER games. ^^;

I've had similar problems with my laptop which has a Geforce 7150M / nForce 630M card.

At first I thought it was simply a driver issue when I went to a 177 driver, but everything worked much, much better except FFXI so I chalked it up to an FFXI update. Well after a month of being pissed off I've tried out 5 other drivers...

Rolling back to 175 and 169 drivers didn't work, and 18x don't technically support 7150M unless you use those IMF updates. 185.20 caused a bluescreen -> safemode -> roll back response so don't go there! What does seem to work is a HP issued 179.44 driver that supports 7150M natively and is designed for laptop install (double yay!).

FFXI still doesn't work entirely correct... there's glitchy text in the POL side and the game crashes when you /shutdown, but at least there's no more spell lag and my 6fps in Whitegate is back up to the 20+fps range.

I hope this helps other people with laptops!

Instead of making a new thread I figured I would just throw it in here. Ever since I built my new Vista 64bit computer, I have been having crashes when trying to load FFXI. I've tried newer drivers for my 295GTX to no avail. Tonight I discovered a new driver 182.08 and so far it seems to solve my issues. Hopefully it will continue to serve me well.
