Hey guys. I'm in the process of building a new PC bit by bit. I have a question about a monitor, or two. I've found two I really like on Newegg.

Now I'm a huge Samsung fan. Most Tv's in my house are Samsung. The question is, which would be a better monitor? That Samsung looks more TV then monitor. It has a ton of input/outputs. I plan on hooking my PC/Xbox 360/Ps3 up to whichever monitor I get, and run the sound through my computer speakers. The Asus on the otherhand is a traditional monitor with a HDMI/ DVI but that is it. It says it has a better contrast ratio and 2ms compared to 5ms. The only thing that concerns me is, that better contrast ratio with ASUS in reality might not be as good as Samsung's lower contrast ratio as each company only compares with their own brand, plus Samsung is known for display. I wonder if that Samsung would look really good playing PC games, with color and all. I know it looks good with Blu Ray.

Btw here is my new PC build that I am almost finished with. I'll post pics once I get it completely together.

Coolermaster HAF 932 full tower
Core i7 920
Xigmatek Dark Knight 120mm CPU fan
6 GB DDR3 1800 memory triple memory
ATI radeon HD 5870
Asus P6T SE-Intel x58 chip mobo
800 watt power supply
1tb harddrive
22x dual dvd/rw lightscribe
Creative labs sound blaster x-f1 titanium fatality champion sound card
Windows 7 home premium (maybe ultimate)

I'd get the samsung, the response rate isn't a big enough deal to care about; people play on 8ms response TV's all the time without any problem. Contrast Ratio is irrelevant, so the only real difference would be the connections on the monitor, which you already prefer the samsung, so stick with that.

Meh. I can tell the difference between 8ms and 3ms pretty easily, and it occasionally bothers me. But I don't know too much about ASUS as a monitor brand either. In your shoes, I'd probably do some research on it.

I do find it entertaining that your new PC is very similar to my new PC, lol.

Well that ASUS is a 2ms, and the Samsung is 5ms. Im pretty sure I shouldn't be able to tell a difference.

contrast and response rate is usually the contributing factors in monitors. out of the two, i would choose the samsung. without actually looking over the specs, samsung usually has a high contrast ratio. ive seen most of them having a 10k to 1 ratio. usually this means a more vivid picture.

Contrast Ratio is an irrelevant spec, as in you could just completely ignore it and be fine. There's no industry standard for measuring it, so everyone does it differently, and then it depends completely on the environment in which you measure. Their testing environment has practically zero chance to being the same as your viewing environment, so the ratio will be different from what they list.

even though that what you say is correct, that there is no standard to measure. you can visibly see the difference between a samsung that typically rates theres at about 10k and a viewsonic that rates theirs considerably lower. this is the reason why i like samsung. i have yet to find a monitor that has a better picture
