New Sig Rules Proposed (was: Annoying!)

Can we have moving avatars? I kinda want my one from qcnn heh heh heh...

Theres almost no visual difference and yet its 33% of the original size. I made this purposefully smaller than I would just to point out the quality difference is minimal. If I went with less compression or toyed with the optimization settings, I am sure it would have come out smaller and better.
Can you do optimizations like that for pngs? Those of us who use transparencies can't rely on gifs. Feel free to hack away at mine but Sandria's is the one I'm primarily focussing on. Sculli tried to do some optimizations on it but came up with similar results to mine (he did shave 50k off on one attempt, but it boned the transparencies quite a bit).

Despite what I originally posted. Everyone is now talking about images and file sizes. Whats the deal on font size? Been a few days and not received any feedback on "my" issue but again. I doubt my signature causes any harm on dial-up users, but in fact helps them out.

I want to update my signature but the new enforcement won't allow me. Will I have to stay Lv.74 forever now?

Kea, ill most likely change it tomorrow... its been kind of hectic this week.

Thank you so much Reeve!

I think we also need to have a rule regarding referral links. There have been one or two people with them in their sigs, mostly harmless, but as a general rule, it strikes me as a bad idea that there is nothing concerning this...

I'm on dial up. Can I have my 100kb limit on my signature back please.

If I don't want to wait, I disable images and don't load any at all. 35kb difference really isn't enough to shake a stick at.

I'm really dense when it comes to sizes and picture thingies, but one thing i don't get, is why the sig "rules" were changed?

The sig i have below is part of the "old" sig batches. I can't change a dot on it, else it'll accuse me the image is to big and i have over 4 lines...
But why can we still see it???

I don't get why it changed in the first place, i saw no one complaining...

Just my 2cent..

/thrusts pelvically in a reminder sort of way

When I ding a level on my jobs, I bring up QCDN on the other monitor and update my sig before we even pull the next mob. I love updating my job levels. It's like having sex on a nuclear warhead to me.

Since this rule change, my whm has dinged 5 luscious levels. But I still can't change my sig without losing the image due to the size restriction.

You know Tweak from South Park? He ain't shit compared to me right now. M U S T C H A N G E S I G

My sig is only around 35 kb. It might not be the best art around, but it still has a transparent background. A 50 kb limit is more than sufficient in my opinion. I've made several other signatures and logos using transparent backgrounds that are under 50 kb:

Rm2kete Banner
ANTOR_Knight / Manamoon Ad Campaign

Sure, they're not impressive in terms of art. Sometimes simplicity gets the message across just as well as if not better than an artistic signature. And who is to say you absolutely need transparent effects for a more visually pleasing signature?

AntorBanner.jpg

And I'm trying to be a jackass or anything, but the above signature has a lot more to do with FFXI than a lot of the images I've seen in some signatures (especially the modern art stuff that everyone seems to like nowadays as their backgrounds) on FFXI-related forums.

Also, you don't need more than four lines for a signature. I fit everything I want to into the two-line limit on GameFAQs (where picture signatures aren't even allowed). QCDN is one of the most slack forums in terms of avatars / signatures that I visit (not to say that it is a bad thing). For example, Zerayla's signature could be signicantly reduced in size:

zerayla_new.jpg

Linkshells: TheBrotherhood and CaelestisST

I'm not trying to be mean here, but nobody really cares who the sac holders of your linkshell are. And why not combine the forum linkshell and the name of the linkshell into one line (even though it is already in your signature picture, you did provide a link - can BBCode do images that are links? You could completely eliminate the usage of any text if it is possible to make your image a link to your forum)? Is it really necessary to have four lines? Most of the information in the text part of your signature is already found in the image, anyway. It might help to have your avatar look like your character rather than how you strut around Jeuno or how you want to look (this is not specifically geared towards Zerayla; some people use signature pictures of characters in full AF2 or something when they're only level 45). Doing this means you don't have to update your picture all the time. You can tell by my signature picture that I am at least level 59. If something comes up in which you're giving advice, it's really not that hard to say, "Speaking from the perspective of a level xy job, blah blah blah."

Here's my GameFAQs signature, if anyone was wondering:

Name: Antor Server Quetzalcoatl
Current Job: Beastmaster 42

This signature isn't even that space conserving, but it gets the job done. If I wanted something more elaborate, I could still fit it in two lines:

Name: Antor Server Quetzalcoatl Job Levels: WAR 67 / PLD 61 / BST 42 / SAM 41
Check out my linkshell: [link to ThaiRevolution]

GameFAQs does not allow any html/BBCode outside of bold and italic text. In a case like this, you can always just make a tinyurl. In a forum like this, you just need to know your BBCode.

Someone bring out the Banished to Gamefaqs card ;x

Nah, j/k :P

But Antor, just because gamefaqs is completely anti sigs doesnt mean we all have to be. Everyone likes being flashy, for anyone annoyed by it its very easy to turn sigs off. Dont see why it should be such a low limit when the majority of the people liked the old limits.

I'm just choked because I made a sig for someone, couldnt get it below 200k, and then about 5 days later these rules changed. So now if she wants to change her sig, she loses the pic.

I'm not too keen on redoing it either, it already took me 4 weeks making it during my sparsely spare time at work.

Not only that, but now my entire LS and all of our template-made sigs are stuck as we are. Everyone in my shell has a sig that exceeds 85kb.

People still use 56K? I'm not sure how far back QCDN should accomodate for. For instance, when you design a website, it's hard to make a complex layout that looks cool in both 640/480 and 2048/1536. Some people even argue SE needs to abandon the PS2 console so that FFXI can move into the modern world. Somewhere in the world, a person is browsing QCDN on a 14bps dialup modem on a DOS 1980's monochrome text only monitor, and we're quite justified in not lowering ourselves to accomodate this relic in a bombshelter for 20 years.

well, Pomp has a point, even though the retarded comment "People still use dial up?" is in it.

I don't think it is necessary to change anything dial up users werent' complaining about. I'm on dial up as I've already said. The only thing that annoys me is how the quick reply feature loads AFTER all the pictures do. Other than that, this site is fine.

To Pompidou - yes, the majority of people on the internet still use dial up. DSL and Broadband are quite expensive to deploy - and I find companies such as Hellsouth unwilling to expand in my direction...

Most of Bellsouth's employees are rednecks right? They got truck-talk to do, beer cans to shoot, deer to hunt... cut them some slack man.

I removed the sig limits for now but please try to keep it your sigs between a total of 50k - 100k max for all images and nothing more than 4 - 6 lines of text high.

If its not installed already, I'll add a bbcode so you can scroll additional information.

Oh, but I cut them all the slack I possibly can. I don't fucking expect them to do shit, or care about anything the residents in this area want. I know they don't listen... so I don't bug them.

I realized this after 2 years of phone calls and lost promises.

Hellsouth can die in a fire. /rant off lol

Speed read: I don't expect anything out of Bellsouth anymore.
