Coming Winter this year (2009).

---

The game uses elements of New Super Mario Bros. and also includes, for the second time in a Mario Bros. series game, multiplayer capability of up to four players. It is played in classic style, with the Wii Remote held horizontally. Movement jumping and attacks are performed with the button, whereas spinning in midair and picking up other players is done by shaking the Wii Remote.

According to the E3 2009 demo, players can play as a variety of characters from the Mario series, such as Mario, Luigi and Toad. Players are able to pick each other up and throw them. If a player dies, he can resume play if one of the other players hits a bubble with him in it. Items come in multiple quantities, either from item blocks, or bubbles that float by on screen. New items have been added, including a Propeller Suit which allows players to fly and a Penguin Suit which allows players to freeze enemies. Players will also be able to ride on Yoshis. While co-operatively played, the game also features competitive elements, such as trying to get the most points or coins. Rankings for each player are given at the end of each level, including stats such as enemies defeated, coins collected, and total points. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed during his roundtable interview in E3 2009 that the game will not feature online multiplayer

Looks like it could be a lot of fun.

I've read grumblings and blog posts from bitter, cranky old gamers who hate that Nintendo is pumping out yet another Mario Bros. platformer. Those people are idiots.

Not too keen on playing a DS game on my TV. The four-player thing is just gimmicky to me. Giving this a pass and waiting on Galaxy 2.

Heh so old school. Yeah they are milking the franchise but who the fuck cares, people keep buying it.

And there are new gamers coming up every day. My sister has four young kids, and this game is tailor-made for them. I doubt they'd ever finish a level because they'd be too busy picking up and throwing each other into chasms.

I'm really looking forward to this, which begs the question, Online modes?

I'd be really shocked if they didn't support this.

Well, prepare to be shocked. Miyamoto said it pushes the Wii's processing power.
Which is pretty weird, considering some bigger games have online.

"Yahoo Games has an article describing a new mode in Nintendo's upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii that will allow the player to active a 'demo' mode to get out of a hard situation. Nintendo plans on incorporating this into future games. Is this a good idea (to help relieve frustrations) or just sanctioned cheating?" They actually patented this system as well.

Yeah Hint 2.0, they are also planning on using it on the Zelda Wii title that's upcoming. Personally I think it's a good idea, will let people who are stuck on an area get past it, etc.
I wouldn't use it, but I know that some others would.

The game looks like a lot of fun (Any Mario is good Mario to me), and the 4 player co-op will induce a lot of friends getting hit after being tossed into pits etc.

As for the Hint 2.0, I find it amusing that people get so bent out of shape about it. It's an option, if someone wants to use it let them, you don't have to. :D
That's the good thing about options, you can choose for yourself. Who cares what other people do?

People need hints for a side scrolling platform game?

Woah-ho! Figured I'd bump this back up since it's NA release is tomorrow. Reviews are looking solid, of course, Mario games are generally solid. Already have my money placed down for a pick up tomorrow, so I'm definitely looking forward to playing it.

In Canada if you pre-ordered you get a 500 wii points card. Are they doing it in the states? If so, did anyone pre-order?

This game makes me regret trading in my wii...so does Muramasa though.

I pre-ordered, didn't get anything. But I heard about the 500 Wii Point deal going on as well, I'll have to ask some friends at Gamestop about it tomorrow.

yeah, we can only give it to the pre-orders once they pick it up otherwise we get screwed...
