Tanks. But no tanks.

One thing that FFXI players have been crying out for is a new tank class. This has less to do with any dissatisfaction with the current reigning tank classes, Paladin and Ninja, and more to do with the simple logistical fact that many players have already leveled those jobs and moved on, leaving Warriors and, in some instances, Samurais to pick up the slack. But while the dev team hasn't added any new tank class (no Chocobo Knights for you!), they did state that in the upcoming patch that launches with the release of Wings of the Goddess, new job balances and tweaks -- and a major adjustment to an existing job -- will effectively render that job (I said 'existing,' so pre-WotG) a tank class. In speculating which job this would be, a number of options become possible, in theory.

I bet my stripper money that it's samurai or warrior. And if I had to bet my winger-wangle for only one choice, it'd be strongly for warrior.

(someone deep inside cries for white mage tanks though....gleeeee)

My money will be on Monk. They already have Dodge, Counter, Counterstance, high HP, high Vit, a B+ in evasion they already have skills that if tweaked could work well as a tank on xp level mobs. They would suck for HNM or NM mobs but it loos like they are only trying to make a tank for the xp mobs anyway.

I'm gonna guess samurai.

Only way they can really give a job a complete makeover without entirely changing what it is (thus creating subjob issues and the like) would likely to be either changing their base stats or traits they obtain and how they work.

Laughably or not, it seems like the job they could most easily get away with by doing this would be Beastmaster, if they went ahead and added damage reduction to Killer traits (which would additionally make their AF Legs, Tatami Shield and the otherwise ignored Flawless Ribbon have much higher use than before as well as be of partial benefit to Paladin.)

No Arcana, Dragon or Undead Killer but those're avoided for the most part. Unfortunately no Demon Killer as well, but would be acquired via AF regardless, if this does in fact become the case.

*edit* My last guess at the moment would be Samurai. Make them any more tank-capable and you're looking at a GK Ninja. Seeing as to how SE's been wanting to divert attention away from NIN sub, this seems like an entirely poor idea if they go that route.

Monk needs Counterstance to not assrape our defense. Seigan and Third Eye is a vastly superior defensive ability.

Not saying it doesn't need a drawback. They just need to go back to the drawing board and change it to be on par with what Samurai has going for it defensively.

Also, Counters need to either give us TP, or not give mobs TP.

watch it's gonna be Dragoon.

lol rdm tank >.>;

This is SE we're talking about. They've shown themselves to be perfectly capable of F*cking up simple tasks.

I got my money on WAR or MNK, with them accidentally buffing PLD in the process.

We need a "the 1-up coverge topic" instead of 12 topics all quoting one paragraph.

I'm thinking(read: hoping) that they'll buff parrying.

I could see BST becoming a tank if they gave us some ability to cause a pet to provoke, or the BST could provoke and the pet could cover.

They did mention they would make changes to an existing job. While WAR is the obvious choice since they have Provoke to begin with, I'm hoping they use a little more imagination.

You know, they really seemed to be trying that. Valoredge automaton has Provoke, Stoneskin, Shield Bash, Flash, Auto-regen, Blink and Equalizer and Schurzen to minimize damage.

But the little sucker still get clobbered.

If they gave it some defense/durability, it could be possible.

As long as they don't pop up with "Bard is the new Tank! YAY!" >.>

BLU :P

BLU already does a decent job at tanking at some levels, and if what I've been reading is true, we're getting 6 new spells from the expansion.

I hope it's not blue, they're good enough without being able to tank as well.

Letting bst's pets tank more successfully or they themselves would be good. Let it somehow work in the party, maybe bst move that give it's pet a bit of enemity from everyone but bst or something.

If it's rdm, it would be funny.. but I doubt it.

I'm seeing sam or war more then anything else.
