I'd say we should start by having less sub-forums showed on the main page. As a user I find myself looking for what I want sometimes even though it's right in front of my eyes. I'm pretty sure we could work out something about that. For example the gaming part, instead of having:

- Gaming
-- General Gaming
-- Nintendo
-- Sony
-- Microsoft

showing up on the main page, we would have something more like

- Gaming Forums

then, when you click on the link, the 3 gaming forums up top and the general gaming at the root of the ''Gaming Forum'' sorta.

-- Nintendo
-- Sony
-- Microsoft

- General Gaming Thread A
- General Gaming Thread B
- ...

I don't know if you understand me guys, I'm half-asleep too but it I felt I needed to raise that point about the quantity of sub-forums displayed on the main page. I don't think it would be a bad idea to actually regroup the sub-forums and having a more ergonomic navigation tree inside the website. Anyway, I'm going back to sleep before my gf kills me lol.

It's something that G4 does actually and it's not a bad idea to be honest...

I wouldn't mind this idea if there was still a way to get to those subforums from the front page and see when theres a new post in them, like the jobs forums right now. I just hate having to click a section to find the forum I want.

Perhaps make an option in forum settings where the feature of having sub-forums collapsable can be turned on and off.

Yup I agree with you on that.

Looking at what we have and thinking of some stuff to take away

OMGWTFBBQ & Reality Sinks In can be merged since no one knows what either are anyways.

Everything Anime & Multimedia Items merge and use prefixes to sort

I'm having some difficulty with the general gaming as it is. General Gaming has around 40k posts and the console specific are lacking with the highest being 6,000. I may consider moving all posts into a general gaming area and allow them to be sorted by prefix as well.

If that happens we either have a hierarchy of

Off Topic
Fan Works
Multimedia
General Gaming

or

Off Topic
Fan Works
Multimedia
General Gaming
Sony
MSoft
Nintendo

Off Topic
Fan Works
 Multimedia
General Gaming

or

Off Topic
Fan Works
Multimedia
General Gaming
Sony
MSoft
Nintendo

Don't support burying forums too deep, so:

Off Topic
Fan Works
Multimedia Items

General Gaming
Sony
Msoft
Nintendo

If you insist on having a heirarchy with three levels, then I suggest adding a drop down list box that will list all sub-forums under the forum you entered (enter off-topic, see fan works, mutlimedia, as well as any sub-forums below those two). This way users don't have to drill down so far, they can just click on the name of the forum in the drop down.

*Gaming (no posts allowed, just a collapsible placeholder)
*General
*Sony
*Microsoft
*Nintendo

The main thing to consider in the hierarchy is consistency. We've done a fairly decent job on QCDN, but we really want a new launch site to shine.

Go with the first one. The second one is just ... sloppy.

This was why I was thinking of condensing the Gaming forums to make off topic a LOT cleaner. Other sites are similar so I figure we should be...right? =/

I still say separating them out is better:

[Eorzea Sun] OTF (placeholder, collapsible)
Off-Topic - Current Events and General Chit-Chat
Fan Works
Tech Section
Mass Media
Gaming Section (placeholder)

General + Non-Console
Sony
Microsoft
Nintendo

Well, if when you say condensing, you mean adding sony, MS, nint as sub-forums, then I'm all for it. I just don't support one big mess of a gaming forum with little sense of differentiation between platforms ... at least until I'm able to see the interface for myself. I get that the idea is to use those tags or whatever, but I'm still not fully convinced.

Take a look at what I've done with this forum. There's a notice at the top that has the options to click here to sort by a prefix. This is what I was thinking with the other forums we were going to condense. It's easily accessable and shouldn't be difficult for users to pick up on. Let me know!

Edit - Throwing out there that it is EXTREMELY EDITABLE since HTML is allowed. We could make certain pictures instead of the text click here and make them match the style by making separate pics for the different styles. It's a very nice and customizable feature.

I like the idea of picutres >.> I've never actually seen/used this sort feature just cause I never knew I could, but if there were pretty pictures I think I would notice and so would others and it would be used.

Yup me too. Having access to html should help us for sure.

Ps: i rated someones up randomly by mt in the other page xd. Stupid iPod D:.

I'm tryin' to make the links look nice, but as it stands I need some decent image editing software or a lot of patience. I guess if we kept the links as text I already did the job, but I too want images to be used. Much easier to identify than what we're using now, as far as prefixes go. At work again (duh) so I'll try my hand at it in another 8 hours.

Gang, take a look at the prefix sorter that Shome developed. That thing is pretty kick ass. We can edit the images for each style so it'll change with the style. Whatcha think?

edit - Needs to be viewed on the forumdisplay page (http://www.qcdn.org/ffxi/forumdisplay.php?f=252) due to template changes...

Very nice, though might I suggest you make it army proof with some text above the buttons explaining the clicking of them will sort the forum?
