I Happen to agree with the article attached.

If you're going to make a promise to yourself to get fit, quit smoking, travel or what have you, don't set the date for the beginning of a new year, just set a realistic date with no clichés attached, commit to yourself.

I am going to quit smoking, but not starting midnight on Wednesday, sometime next year when I feel that feeling, that "ok, I'm ready to do this".

I am getting into self defense in the new year then kickboxing, not as a new years resolution, just because I want to and with the holidays and bills that go along probably looking at February or later.

New Year's resolutions

Wednesday, December 28, 2005
By Annette Campbell

New Year's Eve is traditionally the time we reflect on the past 12 months and resolve to make all sorts of changes in the next year. How many times have we promised ourselves that "next year" we'll quit smoking, lose weight or quit that boring job?

But Jo Lamble — a Sydney-based clinical psychologist — says that New Year's resolutions are generally a bad idea that can set us up for failure.

"They're usually based on wishful thinking rather than commitment," she explains. "If you're committed to getting fit, being healthy, changing your job ... start today."
Jo says we tend to feel pressure to make such resolutions at this time of year because we're thinking ahead — and things seem more possible when they're in the future.

"It's when you reflect on the year that's gone, and also when you're starting a new year," she says. "So during the holidays it's not a bad idea to think about some goals and changes you might need to make — maybe regarding work, the house, kids. It's a good chance to reassess and set realistic goals, but don't feel pressure to make any big decisions on New Year's Eve itself."

Jo says the most common New Year's resolutions are to quit smoking, and lose weight.

"And they both take a lot of commitment. If you're going to do these 'big' things, you need to plan it — how's it going to happen? What's your support system? These are lifestyle decisions that shouldn't be treated flippantly. Smoking and weight loss are very serious health issues that need to be taken seriously and have your full commitment — and a plan."

Jo believes that the best New Year's resolutions to make are smaller, more achievable ones.

"Normally the big ones are wishful thinking and people hope they'll happen because they've made a wish," she says. "You might as well add to your list that you'll make a million dollars.

"Better resolutions would be something like saving an extra $20 or $50 a week, or exercising once or twice a week, being more tolerant, or catching up with friends. But people don't do that — instead they say things like 'I'll get skinny' or 'I'll stop smoking'. And that's just setting yourself up for failure.

"And maybe the best resolution is just to have a good night!"

Repeat offenders

So what about those of us who make the same resolutions year after year … after year?

"That can really cause some damage," Jo explains. "Your confidence level would be going down every year and you can become resigned to the situation. Stop thinking about things relative to New Year's Eve, and just do it now.

"But remember that changes take planning and life-changing big decisions must be informed to minimize the chance of regret.

"You might want to resign from your job, but if you haven't worked out where you're going or what you'll be doing next, it can cause a collapse of confidence.

"So plan carefully and consider the steps you need to take. And talk things through with someone — friends, family or a professional such as a psychologist or counselor, for an objective opinion."

I agree with that. People set unrealistic goals for themselves at the years beginning and call it a 'resolution'. How about not waiting for a special occassion to kickstart your life? How about starting it on the 5th of November or the 9th of March because you feel that you're worth changing for? It's something I've always deemed as silly so I've always made stupid resolutions. Last year was curing cancer and cutting back on killing sprees.

5th of November

Stine and Hornless set a cool goal for themselves last night, as a sort-of New Years resolution.

We want to be in better shape by October basically. I think that a lot of people set unrealistic resolutions instead of making good ones so people stress out over them. I usually just set ones like going to the gym more instead of setting a weight goal.

People that are more than a bit overweight (reads: morbidly obese) and people that have tried their hands at smoking for more than a short while and keep telling themselves they will quit and just can't simply lack any real will power. And they are ultimately lazy. I'm not sure how they would convince themselves they are just going to "eat better in 2009" or "not smoke in 2009"...That makes no sense for someone that can't accomplish that same goal for a week or a day. They need to start small, and really mean it. They need to really want it. Otherwise it's just another failure they set themselves up for, and just cause (in their minds) to take comfort in food or cigs.

How do people drop 50-100-150 pounds or stop smoking cold turkey after they have had 1 pack or more/day habit for years? Just how?!?! Because they really, truly want to change. They are ready. If you aren't ready to truly make a committment to yourself to change, realizing there will be suffering along the way, then you aren't ready at all and need to take your candy ass "resolution" to 2010 and beyond. A resolution is a firm decision to do something, an actual answer to a problem. It's a decision made but annually (in regards to only new years resolutions), and it's the type of decision that should be taken seriously, as, from the get go, the entire idea of it is to ultimately change your life. That's not an easy thing to do in general. It becomes increasingly difficult when trying to overcome habitual/addicting issues that pose major health threats. Your chances at success dwindle down to little to none if you haven't given this "firm decision" some serious thought and alone time. It's for you, and for you alone. And if you really want to change, you absolutely can. Don't listen to anyone else on the matter, least of all yourself. While making the resolution, you had a moment of clarity, and realized how things should be for you...How you deserve to approach your life. Don't continue listening to yourself and others and give in. It's going to be a fight all the way up until it's suddenly not a fight any more. Until then, it's a war. Even after that, you need to remain cognizant and steadfast to avoid your common pitfalls. It's hard work. Do you want to put some in or not? It's your choice.

Seeking out wisdom-filled quotes about suffering will serve as an aide. After all, anyone trying to change the grain of themselves will go through suffering. These are a few that I like.

The basic thing is that everyone wants happiness, no one wants suffering. And happiness mainly comes from our own attitude, rather than from external factors. If your own mental attitude is correct, even if you remain in a hostile atmosphere, you feel happy. - Dalai Lama

What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him. - Victor Frankl

The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become. - Charles DuBois

Would it be a paradox if you both worked out but Hornless only lost the weight you lost?

My goal is getting my lungs in better shape. Getting coughing fits for doing stairs is becoming a pain int he ass.

Edit: And make a badass cosplay for Otakon. I really want to Cosplay next year.

Well I have been a smoker since I was 13, going on 14 years here. I'm certainly addicted. I managed to stop for 1.5 yrs.. about 2 years back, I can't even remember why I started again when I felt I was in the clear. The thing with that is, you never are in the clear, like any addiction it will be a life long conscious effort to remain drugless.
I know the struggles involved with quitting, but I always get aid. Smoking goes hand in hand with drinking alcohol (which most smokers can agree with) so I do not cut myself off from my social circles. I continue going to the bar (as little as I do), I continue to surround myself with friends who are smokers as it's an individual choice that I will have to get used to. However, my boyfriend is a non-smoker which is very helpful.

In my mind I am set to quit, I just need to wait until I am ready, that meaning ready to commit myself, as it stands I'm still enjoying it. Been down this road twice before but I know I can do it.

My goal is simple, I'm going to quit smoking because;

I don't want to cause my body anymore harm than I already have internally as well as externally.

I do not want my bad habit to influence my children (when I have them) which it would do.

EDIT: He smokes "the good stuff" , which I participate in occasionally, but he wants to quit that. I do not, ... I'm going to have to find my sources for the few occasions I do want natures valium... =) what..?

It sounds like you're ready, and have all the reasons you will ever have to quit. What's to enjoy?

Toss out what you have, don't buy more and don't look back.
Hanging around friends with the same habit makes it tougher, but I've been able to quit several vices while keeping friends that continued the various habits. It has nothing to do with the company you keep, and everything to do with what you want. While you recognize the health threats and would like to stop at some point, continuing on with smoking quite literally welcomes the dangers into your life.

I'd say best of luck to you, but really, there is absolutely no luck involved.

Honestly, I do enjoy the satisfaction I'm getting still. Remembering that I've been down this road and knowing what I'm in for. I have tried without being fully prepared and failed because really.. I just didn't want to give it up enough at that time. When I was successful for the 1.5yr I felt I was completely ready, I was smoking only to smoke, only to get the annoying voice out of my head, the physical want of something between my fingers. I think that's what made me last as long as I did that time, obviously I wasn't fully ready, something made me give in.

Oh no no no, Morchy doesn't do cold turkey.
It's not a laziness thing, or the degree of difficulty I will knowingly face. It's that my body cannot handle a cold turkey attempt. I have gotten sick to my stomach at work from, not the shakes, not cold chills etc.. but the black outs I got. I think it may have something to do with my anemia, not sure, purely speculating, but I know I will do it with some aid.

True, I found that surrounding myself with friends that will be there after I've won my battle assists in making my will that much stronger. If I were to cut myself off from the alcohol, the smoking friends, all the things that I associate closely with smoking, odds are it will be that much more difficult to remain a non-smoker when I get back into the scene. Being around them while I fought my battle wasn't all that bad.

While you recognize the health threats and would like to stop at some point, continuing on with smoking quite literally welcomes the dangers into your life.

Absolutely! I just won't fail this time, best to start when in every aspect my brain is saying LETS ROCK... ya know.

I'd say best of luck to you, but really, there is absolutely no luck involved.

Well thanks... I think =)

You're right though, has not a thing to do with luck, it's determination. How do I see myself in 2 years.. I see a non-smoking me.

I quit drinking soda's and carbonated drinks in 07

Tried to quit cake and deserts etc but that one didn't work too well D; so cut it down to special occasions more or less.

Taking up smoking is like #6 on my to do list in my life and around #48 is quit smoking. All jokes asides good luck to everyone in their goals.

My sister Sarah and her best friend Tahna are quitting smoking on the 5th of January because apparently there is a contest by the BC Lung Association here where they test you 6 months after the 5th and they can tell whether you've been smoking (they can tell if it's second hand smoke as well so you won't get dinged for some jerk smoking beside you at a bus stop). The prize is $7,500.00 and a cruise for 2 to Alaska. I just said "bullshit, I don't get a prize for never smoking!"

I've never made a New Years Resolution. I think it's a neato idea but really, if I want to quit something or start something, I'll do it anyway.

I'm resolving to be nicer to Rob.

Oh wait, I really don't want to do that :awesome:

Great idea!!!

Here is one for all of you ladies... Grow bigger boobs... now this is a long term goal so since you wont be able to tell how you are doing day to day post a picture here now for reference material and then another one... say once a week or so and we will keep you up to day on how you are doing with your resolution... its Brilliant!

:want pics:

Kidding aside if you need a special day to do something you dont want it now, so i will continue to not make new years resolutions.

That should be fun, and if I could say so, Alaska rocks! Especially in the summer, when they'd likely be up here.

This is a great idea, Deja! Though we must be fair to guys too, so guys who're trying to get bigger balls or a longer/thicker penis, post it on the same post that the women are posting their boobs. We can have a contest between guys and girls on who can get the biggest percentage in growth.

:want pics: must haves so we can all compare!

I changed my diet last week and have been sticking to it very well. Unfortunately, it has started right at the beginning of the year. It isn't really the beginning of the year that really makes me contemplate life, but my son's birthday. Gavin turned four on January 1st. I want to be healthy for him, so I'm changed the way I eat. My calorie count will be lower until I lose the weight, but I'm making lifestyle changes in order to keep the weight off and be healthier. I quit soda. I'll still have a cup of coffee a day so I'm not completely off of the caffeine. Drinking 8 glasses of water a day has been crazy, but it is amazing how much better it makes you feel. I'm not sure if I feel better because I want to or because of the biological effects of the water consumption, but I will take the benefits where I can get them. lol I admit a part of it has been laziness, but most of it has been me allowing myself to be overworked. I have been working full-time, going to school full-time, and raising Gavin for awhile now. Robin helps out a lot, but I still have not had much time to focus on myself. That's why I quit the game.

Stine didn't mention the best part of why we are wanting to get into shape by October. Stine and I are crazy nonconventional people, so we need weird outlandish goals. There will be some phenomenal Halloween costumes in our future if we can get the weight off. I'm not giving any secrets at the moment, but if you are all good I'm sure we'll post pictures later. :want pics:
Right now I'm 131 lbs and I want to get down to 110 lbs. BTW I am 5'1 (5'2 on a good day), so this isn't too unrealistic.

lol the only way I have found to get bigger boobs without surgery is to get pregnant. I am in a DD cup already, but when I was nursing I was huge. I'm not getting pregnant any time soon, so I don't believe I can work on this one lol
