NEWS: Congress to decide on taxing virtual items

Whoever rushes to the hospital just because they're simply sick needs to quit being nannied through life. I have a cold, save me NHS!

By "benefits package," I meant insurance paid for by your work. In a NHS situation, you wouldn't have that in the first place.

Yeah, I agree, I hate people like that. I'll curse myself, but I haven't been to the hospital in over 15 years =/

I ment more if you get a serious disease that needs treating, or if you're badly injured. Which actually CAN happen to anyone, even if its rare.

Which just means you're paying more in to taxes.

And if you aren't using those services, you don't get your money back. Or if someone is using more than their fair share, you're paying for their overhead.

Nothings free.

The last thing we need is another reason for illegals to jump in without going through legal process.

Fear of border jumpers is not a valid reason to avoid supplying services to your constituants.

There was gonna be a lot more to this post, mostly me ranting about people that abuse the system. I decided against it.

Reguardless, if capitolism has been good to and made you a millionaire, you should be ok paying half your income to help support the workers on whose backs you have stood to make your millions.

Border jumpers isn't an issue though. They either need a good reason, such as their kids not being able to get the treatment they require in their home country, or be a Swedish citizen. There's also a kind of "Green card", which requires them to do some tests and be "accepted" in order for them to get any care at all.

Getting that isn't exactly "easy", though. So we don't need to worry about border jumpers all that much. Hell, don't usually let people that only seek free health care to actually get it, unless its their kids that require it, and they can't get it in their home country.

Most of the time, to actually get entrance, it requires their country to be in a state of need, or that they can't by any means return to their country of origin by any means. Like, as an example, they are in danger of getting murdered by their husband and family, or the country being in a state of war which would endanger the person in question. And even then they might not get a permanent green card.

Yes, I know. But he mentioned border jumpers as a negative aspect of free health care. But he's only looking at an American perspective. America isn't the whole world :p

Wait theres places outside the U.S.? HOLY SHIT! lol j/k I know that, but it's a huge issue here. The free health care will just lead to more people crossing over.

Family Doctors visit also paid by health care in Canada, along with any of the services or therapy they prescribe for you

I mentioned border jumpers because illegal immigrants are one of the biggest problems in America today. As far as I know, it isn't much of an issue anywhere else in the world, but in America, Latin Americans now out number all other ethnic groups except Caucasion Americans. Many of those are here or came here illegally.

For this problem, I blame the government of Mexico not being able to take care of their shit, and the US governemnt for doing absolutely nothing about it because big business likes cheap labor. The people that come here do so at great personal risk. Sometimes, paying thousands of dollars to leave family and friends behind in hopes of finding a way to make ends meet.

Healthcare isn't really a factor in their reasoning to come here. One of the Mexicans I used to work with in the kitchen at Cracker Barrel told me he lives in america, working for 7 bucks an hour, living with 12 other people in a 3 bedroom apartment. He plans to do this for 5 years total, then he said with the money he is able to save, he will go back to mexico and be able to support his family for the rest of his life.

When you are in a bad way, you do what you can to make the ends meet.

I think people may be misunderstanding this. The tax would not apply to in-game purchases if the purchase held no value in the real world.

Example: Entropia Universe. You use REAL money to buy Virtual real-estate and items.

A USD, Euro or any other monetary unit is worth x amount of ingame currency.

Lets say a player buys a giant meteor to build a space resort on. He uses real money to buy the virtual real estate. This would be taxed.

You go to the AH and buy a stack of water crystals. This would not be taxed.

Hence why I also mentioned how we take care of it in Sweden.

In the states, I don't think it wouldn't be too hard to see who said person is and check if he's an illegal immigrant or not, if they so suspect it.

But can you do it without violating that persons rights?

It is critical to note an arrest is never justified by what the subsequent search reveals.

Never heard of an ID card?

I'm not saying don't do it because of the illegals, theres plenty of other valid reasons as to why it's not so grand(abuse, forcing those who might not ever make use of the system to pay for it, etc.)

It's just that if it happens, the problem with illegals will worsen by a metric shit ton.

How would you abuse free medical care for all? The ones who don't use it wouldn't have to pay for medical insurance so they'd still save money.

Give me a scenario.

Not so much abuse, but clogging up the works with pointless visits. Especially with the current brand of parents, do hundreds of thousands of Little Timmy's honestly need to go to the hospital over scraped knees every day?

Never even heard of "Second Life" before someone mentioning it in this post. While it looks quite interesting, having to constantly paying to play a GAME is not my cup of tea. Last 24 hours thay made 2 million... or maybe thats just traded?

This tax is only going to apply to Second life, nothing elce. From the sounds of it, you "create" items, and you can then sell it to someone elce. It would take alot of searching to understand WHY someone would spend money on that type of thing.

P.S. Just be lucky democrats not in whitehouse, what a disaster that would be.

One of my gaming classes met on Second Life for class. What they do is provide you with a design editor and a scripting language, you can make anything using these things if you're patient. Many things which other people will buy in the game because the basic character doesn't come with much other than clothes, the ability to fly and chat. Oh and teleport to local or distant known locations. Centers that players have built and otherwise, why it's going to be the only one to be taxed IMO is that these items are created and owned by the players (says Linden Labs, the creators) they will sell you game currency and buy your game currency back for real money. Basically RMT is handled in-house only, they have forced the economy to remain steady because of it but being a F2P game, they have to make money to run the servers somewhere, so they do it by selling the money to buy other peoples scripts and items that have been created.

Thus creating a way to make online currency turn into real dollars. If you get good enough at the scripting and sell products people want you could pretty much quit yer 9-5.

Anyway, just my input. This will never affect a Pay2Play MMO.

I believe the real issue is the buying and selling of virtual items. In several articles that I have read about this issue, the concern is the millions of dollars that RMT sites and people selling "vitual uber sword +22" for $1K and not claiming the income on their income taxes.

All income is taxable and currently, those operating RMT sites or selling the "uber sword" on ebay are not listing this income on their tax returns.

I cannot (or refuse to) believe that in-game transations using virtual money will ever become a taxed item. On RL transactions and income can be taxed. If congress taxes a purchase made on ebay, then they will have to tax ALL purchases made on ebay and the internet in general.

Sales tax is a State issue, there is no federal sales tax. Feds only tax income.

We have lots of illegal immigrants and legal ones (curse you EU regulations), most come for the NHS and our stupid benefits system that discourages people to work.
