Game and Money:
A Gamer Has Spent $26,500 on Virtual Property

A 22-year-old gamer has spent $26,500 (£13,700) on an island that exists only in a computer role-playing game (RPG).

The Australian gamer, known only by his gaming moniker Deathifier, bought the island in an online auction.

The land exists within the game Project Entropia, an RPG which allows thousands of players to interact with each other. The virtual island includes a gigantic abandoned castle and beautiful beaches which are described as ripe for developing beachfront property.

According to GameUSD.com,a game money price research site, this is almost the biggest transaction in the virtual world until now.

"This is a historic moment in gaming history, and this sale only goes to prove that massive multi-player online gaming has reached a new plateau," said Marco Behrmann, director of community relations at Mindark, the game's developer.

You know i'm not a massive charity person but it kinda makes me sick that they would happily waste that amount of cash on some pixels, when it could help the poor and needy.

*Sigh* I guess it gives a new meaning to the phrase "More money than sense"

I don't see why people complain when rich people spend money. Atleast that money is going back into the economy, however frivilous it may seem spent.

It's not actually being wasted just as Claxton says. It just goes from one person's pocket to another. It still has the same potential to be spent on the poor and needy as it did before. The money isn't destroyed. It is stupid spending in our eyes, but that really doesn't matter too much.

Actually, the guy who bought the space station is counting on making his money back, and some. Chances are that's even true. I doubt he will be making the 20k/month he is looking for, but I do beleive he will get a handsome return on investment over time.

IGE, a leading broker of game property, said it has handled deals worth more than $100,000, but would not provide details because of client confidentiality.

Bottom of the $100,000 article.

Some people, are just insane.

Im busting my butt working and going to school just enough to get by, and these shmucks are just tossing a few k here and there on some pixels and numbers that won't matter much within a couple of years. Horriable.

LOL - wow!

I just wish I had an extra hundred k to blow on such things....damned food and shelter is always getting inthe way of my dreams.... >< ;)

In Ultima online, which my brother used to play back in the day, people used to buy property for real life equvilents in that game. I think one person on his server spent like 75k on a house in it. Goofy stuff, but it kinda makes me glad that you can rent a MH free of charge in any city you want in this game.

*mutters* friggin 4 hours.....

Giving money to the poor and needy is overrated. On the topic of spending all this money for "pixels and numbers, etc." There is no difference in buying these things than buying a car, house, or anything. The value of the item is in worth to the buyer. What that worth is, is opinional to the level of want. I think buying a BMW or Porsche is fucking rediculous like most of you think these people spending bookoos of money on game material is. A Honda will do you just as good as a BMW and probably last way longer but through a want some buy the BMW. I garuntee you these people don't live a life of going to bars and parties and socilization in real life. They choose to have all of this in a game which is fine if that's your thing. People tend to spend money on their important to life hobbies and that's exactly what these are to these people. They are probably very wealthy as well and will eventually make their money back. Most people who spend that kind of money virtually aren't the people who loose in the end. It's like land in and growing place. Buy land for a lot, clean it up, sell it for a lot more or in chunks to add up over time.

Starwars Galaxies Jedi accounts used to be worth about £1,500, then dropped down to about £500, then dropped again.
