Nice Cop-out, SE

LOL. Glad to know I'm helping out.

By annoucement 5 you know they were digging deep for excuses. This is disappoiting. They really should talk to Valve about how to distribute gigabytes worth of games to thousands within hours. Steam is a pain to work with, but it was fast. The most frustrating part is they have you redownload a lot of .DAT files that really don't need to. I know this as I swap out a lot of my .DATs as most know and after big patches like this I find they have replaced some of the common .DAT files with exact copies of their old ones (I have them backed up). Just poor performance all around.

Oddly enough for the first time today I got into pol and was able to start the update process. Estimated time for all files is 30 mins...I won't get my hopes up.

Annoucement 6 will probably be: sorry, but it seems one of our servers have been Haxxored. >< We cannot give you what you want, but you can now get nude photos of Jay Leno. O_o;

Or they ... might have actually been DDoS'd. :P

Sure, we're all resentful of them for the interminable update problems, and the fact that there are always problems when they release updates. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they *weren't* DDoS'd, now does it?

After all, we've had sizable updates before, plenty of player population, and we've never had it being problematic for more than several hours. And yes, bad as several hours is and how they should totally improve that ... it's been, like, a *day* now, and it's still bad, so doesn't that suggest there might be something else besides their usual update problems?

Drop the cynicism and look at things a bit more objectively. Sure, they could be making it up as an excuse ... but when you factor in everything else it is nowhere near unlikely that it's actually true. In fact, considering everything else it's probably *more* likely that it's some outside source like DDoS than just the usual stuff. We've seen the usual stuff before, it's not gonna get four times worse (and counting) in terms of delay for no reason. :P

Does this mean that their update system is wonderful? No, it still has plenty of problems. That does not, however, mean they weren't DDoS'd to make it even worse than it already is.

I finished the update a couple of hours ago, but I get the same 1160 error when trying to log in to FFXI now.

Now I'm sorry, that just makes no freaking sense unless the GAME WORLD servers are sending out the daggum updates themselves. And there isn't a person alive who knows what a server is that would be that stupid.

im sorry... but

Because it still has to do that quick little half-second (normally) check to make sure your version info is kosher before it lets you actually log on? I imagine that check is asking the update servers if your info is good, not asking the game servers.

If you're talking about errors with stuff like connecting to lobby server and letting it know your character selection and whatnot, that's another matter. But if your error is happening during that little time between hitting play and actually having the game itself load up (at which point you go on to select char etc.), then yes, that's very probably still asking the update server.

The biggest problem with off-site downloading is it screws PS2 users. They can't go to Fileplanet or wherever to get the update elsewhere, the only choice they have is POL.

This is the same logic that makes Square dislike the Windower, I think.

no because this now frees up server space that the person from pc would normally be downlaoding from.

I can remember having update problems for more than a day from at least two past updates. This isn't new, it happened with the old updates and it is happening again.

See... S-E is being so bloody stupid with all their updates...

One... they make Playonline totally USELESS when you're downloading.. "Yes, I hear that I got an e-mail.. yes I hear I got that message...don't worry, I'll answer it when I get disconnected in an hour"

"Hey..what's up?"

Now if we were able to use the bloody friends list while we were downloading it'd be a bit better..in fact, if S-E made the download happen in a way where you're not incapacitated, that'd be freakin nice too. Oh look, while I was downloading..they put up 3 announcements saying downloading may get stuck at 45% because they didn't think (again) there'd be so many users.. and look...I'm at 45%.

THE OTHER THING I"D LIKE TO SEE IS A FREAKIN AUTO RETRY OPTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if I'm the only person ticked I have to keep pressing retry every few random number of seconds.... just keep trying and let me go do something...

Doesn't matter. It still gives PC users more options than PS2 users, which is exactly what Square likes to avoid.

If one person has to be handicapped, then everyone must be handicapped. 8) Much like school systems playing to the lowest denominator. No one can go faster than the slowest person.

Ya'll rembember Dinky? He's back in game.

He's a sys admin and he totally smells bullshit.

(besides, they only yell ddos when a huge update is coming
and they have a 56k patch server for the world)

Dink says it's not a ddos and if it was, it could be ID'd fast and
repaired fast. The very fact that you can get on for brief
periods denies it's a ddos. ddos is total lose as the
"3-way" handshake is not complete but still receiving the
first packets to handshake in a flood. (his words)

and he sees NOTHING to indicate DDOS. so... it's Bullshit.

Anyone considered what downloads will be like once they add X-box to the mix?
