Nightmares...

Exercise and sex.

One and the same? ;x (Pfft, if only.)

Thanks for the advice guys...not too sure how to cope with it still though, it prevented me from falling asleep at all tonight. It's not something I really need to write down since I already know I'll be scarred for life over the original occurrence, so forgetting it or anything along those lines will also be difficult for at least a really long time.

On the wayside however, I haven't really thought much of the occurrence until it started being a nightmare that's popped up semi-frequently. Maybe I haven't thought of it enough? Not too sure...

whenever i can't sleep I usually play a video game or ffxi or watch TV to tire myself out, having myself focus on something when I'm supposed to be asleep makes me tired again in about an hour and ready to pass out lol.

as far as dreams are concerned I don't have many of them much less nightmares usually they're problems or issues that I've dealt with or will have to deal with in life fused with other random things usually ffxi related stuff

Just curious, how do you guys usually deal with bad dreams? Don't really mean little random/odd/weird dreams, more like recurring ones that seem to be based on real life happenings...
I've only had two. One reoccuring dream I've had ever since I was a little kid is that I'll be driving somewhere and one way or another find myself going off the road and into some sort of body of water. I remember the first time I had a dream like that I was 4 or 5, and I've had similiar dreams my entire life ever since. Every once in a great while I'll have like 3 or 4 nights in a row where I have that same dream. Personally I believe dreams can be a way of warning you or preparing you for something, but that doesn't necessarily mean ALL dreams mean something deaper. How did I deal with it? I bought one of those little hammers for breaking your window out from underwater (that orange one they tested on mythbusters, lol. At least I know it works) and stuck it in my glovebox. Problem solved.

The other dream I'll have occasionally is a dream where my dog dies...that shit just sucks. I'm not a very emotional person, I haven't cried about anything since I was a tiny little kid...except when I have that dream, I wake up balling like a little kid again. How do I deal with that? I shrug it off as just a dream and thank God that she's not dead yet. I mean, I know one day that the dog I've had since I was 10 years old will die, but there's really nothing I can do about that.

As far as falling asleep goes...all I can really say is smoke some pot. I sleep like a log every single night if I've smoked even just one bowl that day. If I don't smoke anything, it takes me hours to fall asleep. Or I guess you could try taking a couple benadryl, it's a pretty damn effective sleep-aid and totally legal.

The most important thing to do when having recurring nightmares is identifying the causes of the nightmares and dealing with the issue. Otherwise, you'll just have to grit your teeth and wait for them to pass on their own.

In my case I have nightmares during times of stress. When I'm stressed about an upcoming event, such as exams, going abroad (I have a phobia of flying), moving house etc. I tend to have nightmares. The nightmares themselves are often different, although they almost always revolve around a certain theme. For example, if I was about to go on holiday I would have nightmares about plane crashes, although the dreams themselves are actually different. Because I have nightmares during these times, its hard for me to deal with them because I can't really face the issues causing them until the event passes.

So when I know something stressful is coming up, I take certain measures to help prevent nightmares. One of the most effective methods I've found is telling people or writing down what happened in the dreams. When I have a nightmare, to me it is genuinely scary but when I try to explain it, it just sounds ridiculous which helps me take it less seriously and lowers the anxiety, making it easier to sleep to help maintain sleeping patterns.

Another method I found useful is to avoid eating before bed, especially fatty, sugary or high-energy foods. If you go to bed after having just eaten, your digestive system remains active and has to work longer when it should be resting with the rest of your body. This allegedly makes the stages of sleeping more irregular, leading you to spend more time in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, which is the stage in which dreams take place. Although these foods don't actively contribute towards having nightmares, if you're going through a period of having nightmares, the last thing you want is to increase the chances of having a dream.

I also find it helpful to sleep with a television or lamp on, which makes me feel less anxious when I wake up after a nightmare.

Depends on the dream for me....if it's really bad I try to shake it off but if not I try to remember most of it. I have the tendancy to have the same dreams and if I remember I try to change it.

Yeah i'm a wierdo.

I try to ignore them but i cant :| most of my dreams that are bad come true :\

Unless it's an epicly amazing liaison (like, multiple hours... which proooooobably won't happen every time), your average lay will burn about as many calories as walking up a flight of stairs. ^^;

Mish, I wish I had some kinda advice for you but unfortunately I've been blessed/cursed with a general inability to recall any kind of dreams at all.. I remember at most one dream every several weeks, and if i have any others, they're too transient for me to realize they're even happening at any point. =c
