So I need to get my Ninja up to 37 to support the Ranger to 75. I'm pretty much decked out in all the available evasion gear right now, but I've noticed there is /nothing/ as far as upgrades go for my purposes.

Is it worth using some fairly embarassing (defense wise) gear simply because of the AGI/Evasion ratings on them, or should I just forsake the evasion and buff myself with all the DEF I can?

Current gear @30:

Nomad's Mantle (Evade +3 AGI+1)
Federation Gi (Evade +3)
Mythril Earrings (Evade +2) (soon to be a pair of Dodge Earrings for the +3)
Magna Ledelsens (AGI+3)
Reflex Rings (AGI+2)
Bone Mittens +1 (Evade +1)
Emperor's Hairpin (Evade +10)
Kingdom Trousers (Evade +3)
Tiger Stole (Attack +5) (might trade in for Green Gorget evade +1)

I've never tried straight defense, but from a logical standpoint, even a hit for 20 will likely cancel your spells. My first instinct would be evasion.

Evasion is good but do not count out def. Pre-NI you should expect to take hits fairly often and nothing you do is gonna change that. Look at the items your wearing and compare them to the defensive items available. Go for a good strong combo.

Personally I wore flat out DEF mostly until :NI, then went all evasion. It really helps especially on things that double attack (mandies, though your past those.) or things that do -eva, like beetles which totally removes any bonuses you got from the eva+ in the first place leaving you a paper tank without a prayer.

Well, despite what other say, I went for all evasion. There arent any really bit evasion armor for feet, hands, or neck. But you have the other major pieces. Gairlage, if you level there, will be tough as both bats and beetles have Evasion Down AoE. Just make sure your mages, or you though even with capped Ninjitsu mine were usually resisted, cast blind and paralyze. These are some of the most insane spells for a Ninja to tank. You will still need some backup, because bats have double attack. Once you move onto CN, its all golden. I would evade one of every 3 attacks from a Crawler when buffs were up, and often 3 or 4 in a row.

I dont think that even if you stacked up on defense you can handle hits. You just dont have the tools you will need to survive. Stick with the evasion, its a lot more fun ^^.
