While I further perfect a strategy to stomp Maat into the ground (or at least do damage) I'm leveling Ninja:ph34r:. But, I need a shopping list. And maybe some hints.

So, best gear for Ninja:ph34r: from level 12 to level 37? I have San d'Orian Gloves, and Gassan. Maybe some other pieces, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Stupid work filter won't let me get on to wiki pages, dammit. Wait til I get home, I guess.

Are you leveling NIN to use as a subjob against Maat?

If so, you should know that subjobs are disabled in the Maat fight

All replies to this should consist of a "no shit" somewhere, but if you are going to level Ninja, don't stop with just Utsusemi: Ichi. You can purchase the "Elemental Wheel" at the Tenshodo guild offices in Lower Jeuno, Norg, or Port Bastok, and you can also quest the other lower-level Ninjutsu (the enfeebling scrolls and Tonko: Ichi). Monomi: Ichi(Sneak) can be purchased in Kazham or on the Auction House.

Hi Whimsey, I just wanted to say that while top gear does make the job easier to play, don't let it take the fun from your lving. While some of the staple ninja gear can be expensive or hard to get to drop. People will most often remember your tanking and not your gear. Ubber gear is nice, but not always required.

Good Hunting,
Hito †

The Elemental ones are all level 15, yes? Those are on my list to get Soon. I've gotten Tonko:Ichi and one of the other quested scrolls already. Just need some more fame for (no shit) Utsusemi.

Farming necklaces for Norg fame to get Utsusemi is not really altogether difficult; it's just time-consuming as all get out.

Yeah, the elementals are all lv15.

And I agree entirely with what Hitokiri has said.

I skipped the Silver and Mythril Earrings, went straight for Bone and Beetle earrings for the attack. You'll be fighting crabs in that level range so you'll be needing the extra attack boost when they get stoneskin up.

No, it's not. I thought I had it done last weekend, but it turns out I only got to level 3. I'll either finish up with necklaces, or I'll get the rest of the quested scrolls, and have Utsusemi by this weekend.

And yes, a naked Ninja:ph34r: that knows how to tank is better than a well-dressed one that doesn't, but I don't intend to be either.

I mean, I'm not going to not level just because I don't have Leaping Boots, but there's some gear on there that's really easy to get, and free, with just a little effort. And if I'm not going to at least pretend to care, I might as well level White Mage or Black Mage or something else I can fake my way through with RSE and leftovers from Red Mage.

I'll probably skip the subligar, though. Ninjas:ph34r: should look like Ninjas:ph34r:, and not like . . . um . . . people that wear subligar . . .

I have no idea what a maat fight is like on Ninja, but I know it was pretty easy for me on WHM. Two tries to get him down, first time I just ran out of time and second time I went in with the game face on. So, if you did decide the WHM route.. its easy.

On the bright side of Ninja gear, a lot of the gear you get you'll be using for a rather long time. Lizzie boots are nice, but you replace them fairly quickly. However, if you do get them You'll at least have them for any other melee job you get and he's not camped much anymore I believe. He can be a stingy wench tho. Don't forget about the other ways to get tenshido fame. I mean there's the quests in norg, but there's also zinc in Bastok and that risky quest in ... I think San'doria.. where you smuggle goods on an airship. Just sucks if you get caught, but just something else to consider if you're tired of the yags.

I strongly recommend you making buddies (if you haven't already) with crafters. Tools will be a bigger nemisis than gear. (Gear you can always sell back... tools are gone forever). If you can make any of your tools you'll have a slight advantage, and if you can farm any mats and have a buddy hq ur tools you'll prolly help your pocket a bit. Hojo can be a bit pricy, and you can use that when you need a lil bit more hate.. but, I strongly recommend blinding your target at the start of each fight. It'll help with hate, save your shadows since you won't have Ni, and potentially make for a smoother fight. I don't find the wheel that great at Ichi, but it can be nice to weaken the mob if you have say a mage in the party/doing a skill chain, or whatever. Also if you have a cheep elemental tool it can be useful to sneak in an extra skill up or two. You will always want a second voke in your party til Ni. If you have another Nin/war or War/Nin you'll fly to 37 before you can blink (no pun intended) and thus, your main concern is keeping your katanas up to date.

if i were you, i would skip all the ichi spells except these 7
Tonko: Ichi (invis)
Utsusemi: Ichi (shadows)
Kurayami: Ichi (blind)
Hojo: Ichi (slow)
Monomi: Ichi (sneak)
Dokumori: Ichi (poison)
Jubaku: Ichi (paralyze)

basically disregard the ichi elemental wheel
cause the other Ni spell (at level 40) will be better/faster

i only used 2 spells at low levels, utsusemi and hojo (even though i did have all the other ichi spells), no one is expecting ninja to tank pre-37, so i thought it was just a waste of money to get the ichi elemental wheel, you will do more dmg w/ you katanas than your elemental wheel.

as for RDM Maat fight, i recommend melee him w/ a joyeuse

I agree with most of that. I purchased all spells, but the Ichi level nukes are almost entirely pointless because the cast time and damage done are not worth the effort. The only time they were useful was with stoneskin on crabs, but you really need a BLM or heavy DD for those. The other thing is kurayami (blind) is extremely useful. With an evasion build, you can survive noticeably longer without need for recast or backup vokes. Lastly, I tanked from level 12 to 75. With a very heavy evasion build and proper enfeebles, I was able to keep shadows up almost entire fights so I would not discount NIN as a good tank and it's amazing when paired with another NIN or WAR/NIN.

I'm going after Maat as RDM currently (more below).

I can make some of the tools, I hadn't intended to play Ninja:ph34r: until I could make them all myself, but I never got around to doing that. Best laid plans and all that . . .

I've been back and forth about how much I'll end up using the elemental wheel, so how critical it is to get, and I've pretty much decided to get them. I know they don't do a lot of damage and all that, but there's also the additional elemental weakness. Which, if I've reasoned this out properly, means that if I do the one that makes weak to ice, and then do Jubaku, the chance of that paralyze sticking is higher. Or, if I can work with the Friendly Local Mage, the chance of their paralyze sticking is higher.

This is currently more or less my plan. Except I thought Joyeuse was 71? And before the deluge of RDM Maat strategies come in - I've gone after hime three times now with the stand-in-the-back-and-nuke strategy, and have been, uh, somewhat less than successful. So, I'm gonna switch it up, and try hitting him some instead.

But this thread is not about Red Mage! This thread is about Ninja:ph34r:! If the next three Maat fights go anything like the last three, I'm sure there will be Red Mage thread next.

Basically unless it's a hefty evasion piece (eg Emp pin) just go all out attack as that's gonna be your best option of keeping hate, especially from 24-30/31 you're not gonna have shadows up much.
