The Ninjas Role in a Party Pre Utsusemi Ni
Though there are a number of rules a ninja must follow in order to be a worthwhile party member, the first and foremost of these is you must look flashy! The Ninjas most important role in the party is to distract other players as much as possible with whatever arts they have at their disposal.
1. You must have utsusemi scroll at 12. Use this all the time, it generates fancy little butterfly lights, your party will be in awe of your ability to summon butterflies without having to rest to recast. Make sure you have plenty of the powder. Half of the flashiness of utsusemi is the exhorbitant cost your spending per battle, with just ichi it can run up to 150gil a fight. And as we all know, big spenders are flashy. Make sure you address the other tank in your party, usually a warrior, and ask him to only provoke after you've gone through 6 hits. This will make him feel self conscious that he doesn't have butterflies and you will look better. After the fight make sure to point out the only time he tanked, in between your 3rd recasting of Utsusemi, he took more damage than the entire time you were tanking. Make a point of not caring if the whm heals you are not. Someone flashy enough to have dancing buttefly lights need not stoop to asking assistance of a cure monkey.
2. Your equipment says a lot about how flashy you are. It's imperative that you use at least one katana. Katanas are held downward which is different than all other weapons and therefore flashy. Now the problem comes to whether maximum flashiness can be obtained from one Katana and sword, or two katanas. There are two schools of thought on this, the first school in favor of the sword believe that your already flashy having one downward pointing weapon and by then having another weapon turned upwards you have an example in opposites which is Maximum Flashy +1. The second school of thought states that since your the only class that can make use of nifty downward holding weapons you must reinforce this flashiness by having two of them. Your party members will be in awe of your pretty fighting stance and attacks and will be suitably distracted.
3. Use other ninja powders, before 19 all you have are the elemental powders so it's important that you use them. They do no damage and resistance drops to elements will be negligible. This is not the point, the point is you are casting a spell with pretty lights. Make sure you have a macro that states the element of damage you are doing to the creature as well as the elemental resistance you are lowering. People will notice that your spells do two things to a normal mages one, which is uber flashy! "Oh your cure is so pretty, is healing all it does? I thought all spells had two effects, how sad for you ; ; "
4. If there is anything I've learned from cartoons involving magicians and ninjas it's that you must be able to vanish in a puff of smoke, in order to do this you need tonko. This tool is freaking expensive in the AH, usually a stack is more than shihei, but we've already established that big spending is flashy so suck it up. Plus you can show up to a party in the dunes all invisible and be like, surprise here i am. Any time your group decides to move you need to use this ability to reinforce your flashiness so the group doesn't forget since your butterflies and flashy katanas aren't distracting them. In fact if there is downtime for healing use this. Claim your scouting the area and then just sit there. Vanishing is kewl.
5. As I've said before equipment is important. You can't look properly flashy if your wearing the drab armors that actually protect you. Bone armors, and beetle armors may come before their kimono equivalents and may actually protect you more, and probably have an actually useful add to a ninja like evasion or agility but dont look suitably flashy. Remember your job as a ninja is to distract your teammates with your flashiness, suck it up and only wear the crap kimonos you share with monks.
6. Last and but not least, you must end every night of xping by blowing yourself up. I dont care if your in the dunes and your homepoint is rabao, just do it. This makes the party feel more self conscious. Make sure to salute every member before hand, disband from them and proceed to throw yourself at the most high powered enemy around. Make yourself a flashy macro that screams something defiantly at the enemy while you go down in a blaze of glory. This is the best and only use for your 2 hour, guard it's secrets well.
