Ok, fair enough. I was vague and I think I will remain vague, so no harm and no foul.
I reread the whole thread and picked out some choice displays of intolerance and/or stupidity, but I didn't want to call people out like that and start a Kiru vs whomever fight. I simply wanted to discuss points of view. It's not the flame board, you know? =)
It's within the parents' legal rights to name their children what they did. I also did a few Google clicks to look at some interesting notes and comments and questions about child naming laws in the US (and a few outside the US, but mostly by accident) and found a few funny things like "If someone wants to name their child Adolf Hitler Jr that's fine. It's a free country." This is all fine and dandy when it's hypothetical, but when it isn't people start singing a different tune and sending death threats to the parents' home. Talk about intolerance! Not that any of you said those things. I just thought it was funny how everything is A-OK in theory, but when it's reality people send a different message.
Well, I think the whole situation is funny in general, I just feel bad that it's at the expense of some children who don't even have the capacity to understand what's going on yet. That part is pretty upsetting.
Overall, I think everyone who said they aren't fit parents and they deserve their kids taken away - as well as everyone who thinks licensing breeding is going to stop nonsense like this - you're all wrong. There are some key reasons I could see for the kids being taken away, but I think that's for a court to decide. Freedom of speech has its own stipulations. Aryan Nation may seem harmless at a glance because the words are nonthreatening, but Kill Every Jew Campell doesn't seem appropriate. It's harmful, in many ways. So I think a court needs to decide whether Nazi names are harmful to the named or those around them.
Another factor is that you can change a birth certificate, but you really can't stop the parents from calling them Adolf Hitler to their face. So what kind of impact does that have on someone? How do you cope with that when you find out who Hitler was and what he did? (and I don't mean reformed Germany's economics, this time) I think it's all just a bit more complicated than many posters here make it out to be, but try to be impartial.
Man, I dribbled off into a ramble again. I think everyone who is being hateful toward the parents (especially extremists with threatening letters and phone calls) are of the same breed and stock as the parents themselves. You may not condone their actions and we generally agree that Hitler was not morally righteous, but you're really a hypocrite when you blindly follow your own dogma and it is harmful to others - in this case a pair of Neo Nazis pretending (poorly) that they aren't.
The fact remains, though, if my daughter went to school with Adolf Hitler Bennet I certainly wouldn't want her to be friends with him and if that was completely unavoidable (which it probably wouldn't be) I certainly wouldn't ever let her over his house. You feel me? I think there's a strong case that it's mentally abusive and it should be handled accordingly by a court of law.
