No IP address?

Not quite sure how this happened...was online last night, Norton Antivirus started running in the background. Suddenly, my modem's "Internet" light goes dead. I didn't think much of it, since Qwest is a wretched piece of trash and their net goes down bi-weekly at best. I went to bed only to be awoken by mom screaming about how she can't get on Toontown and such - needless to say, internet was still down.

I looked through some things on the computer, and apparently Norton Antivirus wiped my IP address. I didn't even think it was possible, though I do recall it doing this before. I tried rebooting my modem, tried rebooting my computer. Tried the "Repair Connection" walkthrough I was given by a friend, which yielded nothing. iprelease and iprenew, oddly weren't valid promts in the command prompt.

As of now I hafto connect to the net via a very, very crappy ISP. I was sortof hoping someone could give any possible ideas as to how to fix this - I've already missed some Assault runs I was looking forward to, really don't wanna let my LS down by missing Dynamis as well. =/ Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

what you have to do in this case is uninstall norton completely, turn off your modem and router, leave it off for 10 minutes, turn your computer off, leave it off for 10 minutes

then put your modema nd router back on, let them boot up

wait 5 minutes, turn your computer on

at this point it should work, if it doesn't do ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew

if that doesn't work its pc side, and you should get a tech

It says it cannot ipconfig /renew or ipconfig /release because it's media state is disconnected. I'm assuming by that it means the cable, but it's plugged in. God I wish computers weren't so complicated. =/

Believe me, you won't be missed.

If your media state is "disconnected", I guarantee you have a hardware problem. Either the modem, your network card, or the cable between the two needs to be replaced.

Obviously the easiest thing to try is replacing the cable, preferably with a known-good cable to ensure you're not mistakenly replacing it with another broken cable. Even if the wires look good, the slightest amount of static electricity (you don't need to even feel the shock for it to damage electronics) can do some pretty f_cked up things that render your cable useless.

Do you have link lights on your computer by where the network cable plugs in?

ipconfig /release and /renew would be pointless since you already rebooted your computer; doing the /release and /renew commands resets your connection(just as rebooting does) but without you having to shut down your computer. I don't know what else to help you with, it sounds like a hardware problem.

My computer doesn't, but my router does. Power/DSL/Ethernet/USB lights are all on, but the Internet light is off. Whats weird is it seems that I'm able to connect to the net still if I sign into an ISP (though it's still slower), but I was originally able to connect to the net without having to login to an ISP at all. And while I can actually connect to the net when I sign in, I still can't connect on PS2. =/

I'd hope it's not some hardware problem, computer's not even a year old.

Is your computer plugged into your router or your modem?

It sounds like your modem gone don' something dumb. Can you ask Qwest to test and ensure they have connectivity to your modem?

Re: network card. If the one on your computer did fry, which is very possible and almost too easy to do, they're cheap to replace. $20cdn will get you a new one, after taxes.

Re: PS2. So both your computer and your PS2 don't work by using your broadband connection? Sounds like you're on dial-up as backup.

Gonna call them in a bit, though I think their support hours are some stupid crap like 10am-3pm.

Hoping not, gonna try to have my computer run a full diagnostic to see.

Thats what's confusing me but badly. Typically my computer is connected via Ethernet 24/7. Because the "Internet" light isn't on, this doesn't work though.

For some unknown reason, however, if I login to an ISP (using sister's AOL account), it's able to connect fine. Can't connect via S2 nomatter what I do, though.

Friend said it may be Winsock2 corruption, gonna go ahead and try to see if it's that.

Goto http://192.168.1.1/ and navigate to some sort of page that has DHCP in the title. For example on my Linksys router, there is a DHCP tab. If you don't have one of these, check Status/Setup/Advanced Options type areas.

What you're looking for is a few links that will allow you to "Release DHCP" and "Renew DHCP", you'll need to click release first, which should then (if there are any IP type numbers) remove any traces of an IP/DNS/DHCP cache that your router currently has saved. You'll then need to click Renew, and if everything has worked (and your router is set to detect internet connections automatically) you'll then see a WAN IP number, DNS numbers and a subnet mask number also.

(Remember to print screen any settings that you have already, incase something goes wrong. No one likes having to restore factory defaults...)

.... mom? .... Toontown?

That's an odd combination

Well, tech support is all but useless (they asked for crap like my "modem cell number" and wouldn't explain when I asked what they meant). Tried leaving the modem/computer off for ten minutes, but that didn't work. I heard if I use a restore point that that may fix it but I can't figure out if I want to do flat-out system restore or if there's some rollback feature in Norton Antivirus...I'm totally out of ideas.

It doesn't seem logical that Norton could cause this much of a problem, but a System Restore can't hurt to try. You'll only lose about a day's worth of changes anyways won't you?

Could also go to the Norton forums for whatever product you had running at the time. If there's been any other people with the same issue they likely would have posted to the support forum.

Uninstall you NIC - possible it needs some fresh new drivers

Control pannel>>system>>>hardware tab>>device manager>>>Network adapters>>>find your NIc here>> right click>uninstall>>action in the top left>>>scan for hardware changes. Give that a shot

Guys... stop making stuff so diffecult to fix...

it just that the modem is reading the internet, and the ip are 0.0.0.0
It's not 0.0.0.0. She has no IP. "Media state: disconnected" indicates failure of connectivity at level 2 (Data Link) of the OSI model. So it's either a problem with level 1 (node-to-node hardware), or a problem with the media recognition and bit-level protocol initiation that defines layer 2.

You aren't using Norton's Internet Security suite are you? While Norton Anti Virus doesn't have control over the network, the previous product might.

Got it fixed after 3h with a different customer service guy. For whatever reason my sister's laptop still had the 192.168.0.1 IP and was able to work from there and fix it via her laptop. Thanks guys.

DSL Modem eh ? I This is how he did it.

-Go to you're start menu, then go to "connect to". then select "Broadband connection. New window pops open.

There you will see in that window the simple tab to connect, which will put you're PC online. Other options are self explanatory.

If you're information isn't punched in that window, you will have to punch it in. If you cannot remember the ID and password then contact you're ISP.

(If there is no option called "connect to" in you're start up menu.)

- Go to Control panel, Network connections.

There you will look for "Broadband connection". If Broadband conenction isn't present, then look for the "create a connection" Then you will fill it out with you're info, or better yet it will be ready to roll. Then connect the new broadband connection, and there you have it.
