Not sure if it'd fit more in here or the FF Series forum (sort of fits here anyway).

Anyway, composer of most of the music heard in the Final Fantasy series (excluding the Tactics series and X-2), has left SE to make his own company.

Read article.

This makes me sad. :(
Although, I believe he's still going to be doing music for The Black Mages, so that's cool.

Not exactly happy news for the Final Fantasy series, however in starting his own company we may be treated to some new high quality stuff ^^

Farewell old pal!

He won't be missed by me though after his not-so-good later work but he's the man behind the most brilliant tracks of the VG industry!

As for the Black Mages, I hope the second one won't be released, musicianship and arrangements were already awful on the first opus :?

What?! NO! Hes a music genius >.> Such great music....will miss it in the future =(

Uematsu is the best composer of his kind ever. However, he's not diappearing entirely, and I'm sure his colleagues have learned a thing or two from him.

Oh man....how very uncool....

I will definitely miss him, and the music will never be the same again...

R.I.P Final Fantasy Music - 11/2/04

I don't know, but I've never been impressed with any of the final fantasy's music. :? I loved the music in many other Square Soft games (Secret of Mana, Crono Trigger, Xenogears), but the FF ones never came off as exceptional.

Oy this is really terrible...I'm guessing FF12 will be his last game then...

Damn, after seeing the crap they made with X2 I'm worried...

Farewell!

12 looks bad. (;-_-) Heard it's a lot like 11 but offline, my friend went to E3, said it wasn't all that great.

The music in FFX-2 was one of my main complaints. I had a sigh of relief when I didn't see his name in the credits, although I think I may have enjoyed it a little more than all the pop and crap in the game.

The Black Mages II: The Skies Above is still going to be released, I believe. It's supposed to come out next month. I'm sure (hope) that SE will still allow him to continue with the band. The main thing is that he isn't exclusive to SE anymore. He created his own music company. So he may still do music for them, but again, he may not.

The music is one of my favorite parts of the Final Fantasy series, and it makes me sad to see him leave.

Why are we all focusing on how sad it is? He is pursuing his own desires and happiness. It is a loss to Square, and hopefully they can find someone to fill that unfathomably large gap, but he didnt leave them for another company. I hope he is extremely successful in his endeavors, and perhaps Square will be hitting his company up for soundtracks in the future.

And this doesn't necessarily mean he's done composing for Final Fantasy. Square's other two excellent composers, Yasunori Mitsuda (The Chrono games and Xenogears) and Yoko Shimomura (Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, Parasite Eve, and Kingdom Hearts) left the company a several years ago.

Now they come back as consultants to compose as opposed to employees.

(And personally, while they're all great musicians, I'd place Uematsu at the bottom of the three.)

Final Fantasy 8 is probably my favorite of his work, although I have soft spot for Final Fantasy 4. Uematsu is the reason I have a "Video Games" playlist on my iPod.

I back up on Turion here too. I love Mitsuda's and Shimomura's works.

I advise to listen to Hiroki Kikuta too. He has done the wonderful Soukaigi OST and Secret of Mana 2

I like Yasunori Mitsuda a lot, too. He's got a different style from Uematsu, but both of them are very good at what they do.

I'm kinda surprised it took this long for him to make his exit. He hasn't even done of full soundtrack since FFIX. I really do feel he hit his peak with FFVI, though that's not to say later soundtracks weren't good. (Although X's soundtrack really didn't impress me. In game it's okay, but as a stand-alone soundtrack it's not as good as earlier music, or XI for that matter)
Best of luck in your future endeavors.

And speaking of Mitsuda-san, has anyone heard from him lately? I haven't seen a soundtrack from him since Xenosaga 1.
