Ok i know there are wind insturments, and there are string insturments and wind insturments whats the difference?
I finally unlocked bard and am like .... flute :/ harp :/ fuck it ill get both.
So if someone can explain to me a lil bit about bards and stuff when starting out that would be great ^^
kthxby

A. harps have longer range.
B. flutes have shorter range. but compliment the skills more i believe.
C. ..... the instruments add to skills, get them. its a big help. i have every instrument.

Flik is right on the range, but I never noticed the difference in Strength of the spells besides the one with +1 or +2 to the song.

Using an instrument doubles the power of a song, as you add your instrument skill with your singing skill as opposed to just singing. Harps - long range Flutes - short range. GET ALL THE +1 INSTRUMENTS! AND DON'T BE CHEAP! GET THE HQs! Seriously, they help a ton and aren't expensive at all.

Best of luck.

Instruments do not double the power of songs. That would be way overpowered.

Yes they do technically, at least this can easily be proved on simple buffs anyway(not things like ballad) Try singing for example valor minuet. Lets say for example's sake it gives +20 attack without an instrument. With an instrument it's a combination of your singing with string or wind to get +40 and maybe a tiny bit more with the proper HQ instrument.

So instead of applying just 50 singing skill toward your song, you're actually applying 50 singing and 50 string or wind leading to a total of 100 before the stats if the stats of the instument.

Why use both string and wind? It really doesn't matter much. But for most songs there is a corresponding instrument that enhances that song. However that instrument will either be wind or string, but never both. For most songs, the instrument that improves it is a wind type. But there are a few songs in which the instrument that can improve them farther with stats are strings. Two such examples are etudes(great for blms on MBs for example), and magic finale(dispel).

If you lack the proper instrument that would improve the given song, as long as you're playing that song with a capped or nearly capped instrument, you'll do fine. There's really not much effort or gil required to be a decent bard. You have to be a freaking moron to screw this job up.

Since you won't exactly be spamming etudes much, I found a decent way to keep the string skill in shape is to PL it to 90ish in qufim, and from there always use a stringed instrument for finale. It helps keep the string skill caught up with the wind, and I mention this because a lot of bards neglate string a bit. I did up until 40ish when I PL'd it to 100ish and then did my own advice. Or you could always do skillups higher up. Even far from capped string skill, finale still lands 99.99999999999999999999999999% of the time low-mid game-lower high game np, so that's not a problem.

Sorry, that 'never both' thing bugged me.

Lullaby and Threnody are exceptions to your never rule:

Mary's Horn - Lullaby+1
Nursemaid's Harp - Lullaby+2

Piccolo - Threnody+1/2 (HQ or NQ)
Sorrowful Harp - Threnody+3

The +skill to a song will enhance the effect of the song and also lenghten the duration of the song. For every +1 to a skill, the song will last an extra 8 seconds (the time it takes to cast 1 song). So be aware of that when using +1 and +2 instruments when planning party buffs and what order to play them in so you get the right buffs on the right people.

You'd be surprised to see how many bad bards there are. And it's also very difficult to be an excellent bard. Being a mediocre bard that just plays whatever they want wherever and whenever they want is easy.

My advice is to head to alla and browse the bard forums and read what other bards have to say about the job. After you read about what other people do, the best way to become a good bard is try many different things in parties and find out what is best for yourself.

I've had the same problem with my string it's level was so much lower then my wind... What I did was equip my harp and made this macro..

/ma "Army Paeon" <me>
/wait 12
/ma "Army Paeon II" <me>
/wait 12
/ma "Mages Ballad" <me>

You can pick any songs really that's just the ones I use and I just spamed it over and over again it took me a while but I finally got caught up...

Passions, in my experience you're going to be using wind inst. more often than not, so you will find that this skill is capped. Take the time to keep string capped, since if you aspire to get to 35ish and get the Military Harp, you'll want the sting skill capped as well.

I don't have all the +1 instruments, only the ones for the songs that I use often. To say that the +1 or +2 doubles the "whatever" of the song is an overstatement. If you're getting, for example, +10 attack with one song, and sing the same song with the +1 version of the instrument, you will not get +20 attack, or have the song last twice as long. I agree with the person who said get +1 instruments, I like to offer the best songs to my party, because my exp is tied to it too. They may not know the difference during the fight, but they sure will be asking why they are missing so much, or "why the exp now sucks" when you leave. ;)

Best of luck!

Coming from a 68 bard, best way to cap stringed: spam threnodies between your regular casts. Works wonders.

/slap, my bad. I completely forgot about the horn and harp example, and should've known better.

I still stand by my statement though that only an idiot can screw this job up.

Doesn't take a talent person to etude the blm before the MB, keep up with the melee/mage songs, and select songs to fit the situation. For example using blade magridal(acc) in a place where it's not currently needed. Selecting more unusual songs for missions is also an easy process.

It's simply not the job to select to apply skill to, nothing to it. This isn't to say I don't enjoy myself on bard, it's just easy as hell when compared to my ninja and any other job out there that I've played. Even when I have to deviate from standard bard practices used in xp do to a mission/quest, it's still cake and a matter of simple judgement. I have seen people screw the job up, they're just a bunch of really dumb people.
