Ok this drove me nuts all last night. My video card decided it wanted to die, its fine and dandy it was 2-3 years old anyways.

I buy a new one, XFX 9600 GSO 768 meg PCI E 2.0. So I check the specs, it needs a 400W power supply. So I buy a 600W. No biggie I expected that.

I get the video card and power supply, Install it all. I boot my PC and it wont boot into windows. Says blah blah/system is either missing or corrupt. So I power it off check my connections on my 320g SATA Drive all is fine. Try again.

Fuck. Sure didnt work. So I run the repair tool. Try to do Check disk, it tells me I have no active partitions.

So my question is, why the hell would replacing my video card or power supply cause my hard drive to drop its partitions?

P.S. I already reformatted it and shit so I just want to know why.

o.o that's weird. outside of not loading drivers first (you didn't indicate whether you did or not so I assume you didn't), there doesn't sound like anything physically wrong with your setup other than the failed graphics card.

i can't say why your windows crapped out like that.

had you not already formatted, i would have suggested plugging this hard drive into another computer as a slave and seeing if it was browseable.

I also ran the FIXMBR on the windows repair tool which is what enevitably fucked me into formating completely.

EDIT: Also I did the DISKPART or w/e command it is to check the partitions and it only Showed my C: as 131 gigs as far as I can remember I only had 30 gigs allocated to C: . I had 3 other partitions on there that didnt even show up.

Drivers would not matter on a pre Windows area. That is all if the System board sees the HDD. If you could get into BIOS and see it says there is a 320 GB hdd then that isn't a problem. If FDISK does not show a partition then whatever killed the video and power supply killed the partitions.

Was it a power surge or something?

The video card got burnt out cause the fan stopped working. My PS was fine I had to get a new one to meet the specs of the video card. The hard drive was seen as 320 in the bios.
