You talk to Luto in Upper Jeuno for this quest. You have to be at least rank 4 to begin it. Mostly you talk to acouple of people regarding how your NPC will come out like, and it's charecteristics. There are 2 fights:
A skeleton in which your NPC helps out in Eldieme Necropolis, which is a lvl 40 mob. The second mob u fight is a Dragon in the hut in Ghelsba Outpost, and it's a lvl 30-35 dragon, lvl 40 cap battlefield. Be sure to have the right equipment and if your a mage careful when soloing it will be hard. Up to 1-3 people can enter the battlefield. At about when the dragon reaches 75% HP, there will be another cutscene with your NPC, and now your NPC will help fight the dragon. Once you kill the dragon go talk to luto again in upper jeuno, zone and talk to luto again. Rendouvouz points are in Ru' lude gardens, Winduurst Waters, Northern San' doria, and Port Bastok, at a target called "Rendouvouz Point". At these points you can switch your NPC's job, and you can tell him to give you signals for Low HP, low Mp, and when he has enough tp for a weaponskill. You can also chat with him.
After 3 summonings of your NPC you will be able to switch it's job, between "Attacker" which he will fight as a DD, "Defender" which means he will Provoke the mob at the beginning of battles, while dealing small damage and taking damage, and "Healer" in which he will cast buffs on himself and you, while also curing.
After 6 summons you are able to switch his weapon. I don't have much info on here, what lvl weapons and what type of weapons they accept, but I know for a fact that after 6 summons you can trade a weapon to luto and your NPC will equip it.
