Obligation to reimburse player for AH overpayment?

I've overpaid, and been overpaid, on a few occasions, though never anything remotely resembling this.

(For the record, news of this epic mishap reached the far-off server of Sylph...)

When I received the extra cash, I went to somewhat extraordinary lengths to track the individual down, and ultimately found out that he was apparently a JP player who was quitting the game and who had decided to disperse his gil by overpaying for random items on the AH. Initially I started by searching for him every day in game at least once, but came up blank. Then I searched for him on various sites for a while until I found other people who had received the same random overpayment, then followed those threads a bit further until it finally came out what was going on.

I'm a bit compulsive about doing the right thing, at times.

I've never taken extra change from the cashier either.

When I was the one overpaying, and the one time that it was a significant overpayment, I made the effort of tracking down the guy who had done the selling, but ultimately came up blank. I was somewhat disappointed, as it was one of those really, really obvious incidents of paying too much for the wrong item, but frankly some people have no particular moral compass and that's just the way the world is.

Short answer: You'd want the money back if it happened to you (and don't lie and say otherwise), so frankly anyone posting that they'd keep the money is a bloody hypocrite.

Gosh Raes, I wish I had your talent with the written word =D you put it best cant add to anything here.

I don't think it's hypocritical. Hypocritical would be not giving the money back and then if you overspend, expecting someone to give the money back. I would keep the money, and while I would want my overspent money back, I would not expect it back and would just call it a loss. You're confusing being a hypocrite with just being a jerk.

I, too, give the change back to cashiers at stores if they give me too much.

Video game values do not equal real life values for most people. Yes, there are real people on the other side of my screen, but I really don't give a crap about them unless I'm in the same guild or have known them for a while. Why is that? Because most other people don't care, so I don't care either. :) The jerks will be one step ahead.

No, I'm not. You would want the money back, and BE HONEST, you'd be upset if you couldn't get it back.

Ergo, you're a hypocrite if you screw over an anonymous stranger in the name of making a quick, unethical "buck".

Anyone that says "Oh I'd just call it a loss", particularly when we're talking about this quantity of gil (or more importantly, the time investment that it represents), is a liar.

I hate it when a good conversation turns into point-by-point rebuttals and then one half can't hack it and just vacates.

Got me all excited for nothing.

never mind ^^

So you're not gonna like, rebutt anything Reau said? He spent a long time writing that I bet, you could at least give him a real response instead of passive-aggressivity.

I've overpaid for a few things myself and I considered it an "idiot tax" on myself.

When I was working on my relic, I was running through sky of all places and saw Willian up there. I checked his bazaar--he had 4 stacks of bynes up for 4k a pop (this was obviously a good while ago lol >.>) and a 100 byne, up for 4k. You bet your mom I bought that guy!

I zoned into Shrine, laughing on my LS about the error and my good fortune, and Willian sent me a tell with just "oh shit x.x". He never asked for it back but basically beat himself up in my tell log for a few minutes. Given that I knew good and well the guy was richer than Croesus, I let him sweat, then zoned back out and traded it back to him. He gave me 50k, which I then put back into his pocket by buying some of the singles. I had a good laugh about it, but in the end my conscience ruled ;P I think most of us would do the "right" thing.

Now if it had been a gilseller or something, sure, I would've ripped him off, but it was someone I knew very casually. I don't really know Zer, but I'd return the money, too.

I feel the same way Rae. I have to make it a point to repay people back if overpayed. To me though t just feels like common courtesy to return such an amount. just me though. :)

I disagree. It doesn't matter what medium the decision or act takes place in. Everyone has a personal set of ethics. What is wrong and dishonest to one person, can be accepted and fine with another. This is true whether you are playing a game, at work, at the store, amongst friends or whatever your cirumstance may be. For me if I want to feel I am being honest, I will make an attempt to right the wrong. And yes this did happen to me recently where I got 600k for an earth staff. I finally found the player after 2 weeks. He was JP and through the in game translator I was able to make him a Terra's staff for his overpayment.

Others have already said this but the golden rule applies whether it is in game or not. "Do unto others as you would like done unto you".

No I'm not..... Have a good night Al. ^^

Try to be in the other person's shoes and imagine how it would feel they returned the excess gil to you. I betcha it would feel great!

* "Do not to your neighbor what you would take ill from him." – Pittacus[7]
* "Avoid doing what you would blame others for doing." – Thales[8]
* "What you wish your neighbors to be to you, such be also to them." – Sextus the Pythagorean[9]
* "Do not do to others what would anger you if done to you by others." – Isocrates[10]
* "What thou avoidest suffering thyself seek not to impose on others." – Epictetus[11]
* "It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and well and justly (agreeing 'neither to harm nor be harmed'[12]), and it is impossible to live wisely and well and justly without living a pleasant life." – Epicurus[13]
* "One should never do wrong in return, nor mistreat any man, no matter how one has been mistreated by him." - Plato's Socrates (Crito, 49c)

Golden Rule

My take on the whole thing :)

*shrugs* I had been rushed a couple wks ago to play my drk37 (which had NO gear at the time) to be a sync in east ronfaure (s) party and accidently paid 21k for a Grip that was 1k cuz another item I had been looking at was 21k, personally I just shrugged it off cuz it was a mistake but my mistake and therefore my fault in the loss. was surprised when in the ronfaure s party I get a tell from some guy (excuse me...) (do you speake english?) and it was the owner of the mule that I had bought the grip from, questioning my 21k purchase. I said it was a mistake cuz I was in a rush, he sent me the gil.
While this rarety is nice, and ethical in ways, they werent required to send the extra back. we all have made a mistake in one way or another, its really what that seller wants to do or the way they see things. Luckily I encountered a person who saw mine as an error and gave me extra back. but we cant expect this always to be the case

heh thats why I always sold on mules. your mistake, your problem.

i dont even know how people these HUGE mistakes with gil. If you work that hard for it, then be fucking careful with it.

I've been overcharged in the past...and did not have the kindness of being refunded what I overpayed. Yet I'd make it my duty to return any mistakes. Liek it has been said, it would be based off a person's own personal morals though, and sad as it is, not everybody will be as kind as to return it. As it goes, people who show acts of kindness will have it returned to them one way or another, yet those who choose to look out for only themselves, will also get what they have coming. Karma can be your best friend, but at the same time, it can be one hell of a bitch as well.

That's exactly how Raes was defining hypocritical - a person who would take the overspent gil on their item, but be greatly upset and try to get the money back from their overspent purchase.

Let's say this incident happened, although it may be unlikely, but let's say for example you saved up for a few years and earned yourself 12 mil. Then you bid on a purchase that's worth 1.2 mil but you accidently over bid an extra 0 digit and end up bidding your entire 12 mil savings.

Can you honestly say you won't be upset losing that entire 12 mil and be back down to 0, or would you just consider it a loss and not even bother to track that money down and get it back?

Everybody is wrong, nobody is right.
The end.

assuming karma exists....which imo it doesn't seem to. I know plenty of people who are quite nice always helping out irl and in games, and have been scammed/hacked, had items stolen or ninjad from them.

sure, maybe something good will happen to them eventually, but thats simply probability, not karma. The same goes both ways, plenty of assholes who steal/cheat/etc... and roll highest on the best drops/get everything easily, without any consequences.

I would like to believe karma exists the same way I would like to believe there is some sort of an existence after we die, but honestly...no way of knowing haha.

Like you said naue, it's usually eventually. I try to stay on the god end of the spectrum there, and I've noticed bad shit usually prevails after I'd do something good, out of my way, w/e. WHat i notie happens, is it usually comes in waves. For instance. I lost my job last year right before my birthday, have been broke since, etc, but now, things are really [picking up, and going a lot better now, all this good stuff is happening. Theres no definate proof it exists, yes,but I'd like to think it does :3
