This pretty much sums up my position on hate crimes.. except for the whole believeing in god thing.

I haven't really thought about it like that, and I have to say I agree.

His defense of white people deserving hate crime protection from black people has one major flaw that I can see, and not it's ludicrous conception. It's a defense for white people, and everyone knows that's one double standard that won't be broken.

I have never understood the validity of punishing motive over the crime that was committed. Sounds like emotion over justice to me.

Not gonna get much argument from me on this one, I've argued that hate crime legislation is outright unConstitutional for years.

Motivation matters little.

Did someone commit a crime?
Yes -> Punish them.
No -> Let them go about their day.

Does it make it any different if the crime was committed against a Gay Tran-sexual Mexican with no legs? No, it doesn't. A crime is a crime. I'm not sure why this is difficult for lawmakers to understand.

It's early in the morning, I'm not comprehending this.

All I can say is that you don't see hate crime convictions against whites, even though it happens. I imagine if anyone went Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton on these so called "hate crimes" they'd be called racists, white supremacists, etc.

Double standards are rampant in America right now :\

Not really going to argue to much about it. I think hate crime laws have a place in making sure justice is served when local law enforcement turns a blind eye to a crime based on the victim's race or other attributes.

Having said that, if you're going to protect people from hate crimes based on their religion -- which they choose -- then you can protect people based on their sexuality, which, like race, they don't. Do away with all hate crime laws and I won't protest, but I want us to be covered by them as long as they're on the books.

Sorry, but this isn't a subject I'm particularly passionate about.

For someone who wasn't comprehending what I posted, you sure did a good job reiterating my post for me.

Oh good, I was hoping that was gist of things.

change the title Deja :>

There's still time for an argument to break out, since Obama's signing the hate crimes expansion into law today.

hate crimes are just retarded. its just as easy for a minority/gay/lesbian person to commit such a crime on a white/straight person.
crimes should be seen as what they are. crimes. a judge looking over the case folder of a murder doesnt see color. just facts. but the minorities will totally outrage if it isnt prosecuted with hateful intention. personally, i think the some of the minorities are the ones that are prejudice.

There changed the title for you

Given the racial disparities in sentencing in our criminal justice system, I seriously hope you don't actually believe that's true.

im saying that reading the facts that are in a case folder, a judge or anyone for that matter, doesnt see color. just words. unless they seek information on each party involved.

unless of course, it says "jo schmo, a black american vs. whatshis nuts, a white middle class american"
which, i know it doesnt say that in a case file. problem is, the judge looks over each party and investigates each person before the start of a case to see their background. race shouldnt even be put into consideration when it comes to a case.
but, unfortunately it is.
