Official Halo 3 Thread - Halo > You

Has anyone had a chance to play infection yet? I've really wanted to try it, but everyone is always in matchmaking and not custom games. Unless its in matchmaking too?

Also, lol to how easy it is to level up in this game. I went over to a friends house last night and we got to 40 in lone wolves. Never lost a match, and never placed below second pretty much.

Still don't have all the achievements either. Steppin' razor is a bitch.

I haven't seen infection in matchmaking, but I have however had the chance to play it in a custom game. It wasn't really that amazing or fun at all =(

You could take me, and my massive slayer skill of 11 (i think, maybe 9) and rape the shit out of some people, hahaha. Just let me get warmed up. Seriously...

I think if youre lower than the other people in your group by several levels it gimps your leveling up. I could be wrong, but the dude me and osiris were playing with only got 3 level where we both got 9 today. And he was always 3-4 levels behind us.

Oh yeah it does, but it puts it against people lower than you so its an easier win. When you don't actually need the easier win it doesn't really do any good. It also has to do with how well you do in a givin game. The lead scorer on the winning team will get more points to level up in the skill than the lowest scorer on the winning team.

 @ infection being not so fun. Was it just a bad level or people? I had really high hopes for this game since they made it.

I thought infection was kinda fun when i played it on highground with like 10 people. Also, i still have yet to play with anyone who i would call "1337" except one group me and osiris played today EVO || or something. They were both like 46 or something like that and beat us 50-28 or something. One other guy we played pretty much raped us up too on shotty snipers. Otherwise upto mid 30s no one has been that hot. Halo 3 is ridiculously easy to rank on, i was never above 25 on halo 2 but in a week im already 32 on halo 3.

The one thing that does piss me off though is the shoot and beat with the shotgun where it makes it a one hit kill. Maybe i just havent gotten my timing down right yet but i always get raped by that.

I've about figured out this number rankin' has nothing to do with individual skill, especially in Team games. It isn't a "skill" rank at all, not even close. It's how much you play. I've been 16 in Lone Wolves despite dominating for the last 2 weeks in Slayer matches and kill/death wise in objective types. My last few games last night I went 25K/8D, 21K/9D, 24K/9D, and 20K/11D (2nd place though on the last one). My USMC tag skipped from Gunnery Sargent rank 2 to Lieutenant grade one and over half way to grade 2. I was still 16 when I went to bed after only after a handful of matches. I woke up and booted Halo 3 up to go into theater but accidentally went into Matchmaking and noticed I went down to 15... The way I see it, number = matches played decently, badge = hey you did some good kid have a badge. I don't think the number means shit because I've played people in the high twenties and they were no better and badge wise, I've played people who had LT grade 2 back when I was still a wee lil' Sargent and they weren't special. So, as far as actually rankin' people, I think Halo 3 fails. These numbers and badges are just an individual goal to work for that adds longevity to the multiplayer, I say. It's like Lost Planet's level system, you don't have to be good to get to 99 you just have to play... a lot. I guess in a sense Bungie could think they are right to rank people's "skill" like this but in essence it's Bungie thinking, "oh, they've played a lot of matches, they have to be better than the guy with only X amount under his belt" for the most part. That's no way to rank people properly. They should go ahead and admit it's just a fun little side deal to multiplayer. It's not like they don't know the majority of the community knows it's, by far, not ranking people properly enough to be an actual skill rating count.

If you're running in for the beat don't worry about the shoot + beat combo. Just rush in to beating range and shoot. One shot is much easier to time :D

The skill is what level you are in a particular matchmade playlist. Your first post is kind of confusing, you are a 16 in lone wolves and playing slayar, that won't make your lone wolves rank go up. Why you went down is kind of puzzling though.

The rank however, *is* how much you play. You get expierence for every match you win where you do better than someone of a higher rank (as i understand it) and you get a perma -1xp for each matchmade game you quit. Also depending on your rank and your highes skill level, you can skip whole rank grades entirely.

The game is still new, ranks havent balanced out, dont believe me. look at the matchmaking options next time you have a list loaded up and check by level, its high spikes in the twenties and almost non existant in the 40s, which is where all me and my friends are and it takes forever to get a match.
it will take a couple more weeks for level to balance out, but it is based on skill.
The medals, are based on time played since you can only lose XP by leaving a match early, and you can only gain by winning one.at around the level 45 TS playes, its pretty evenly matched, ocassionally get someone who we stomp but around our level our skills are evenly matched, And as long as the stats balance out and bungie doesnt go on a rank reset soon, it should be the same on all levels.

Yeah, I get how it works I just don't think it does justice as a -skill- rank process. It's pretty much, like I said, an experience ranker. How much have you played the game. More than a skill test, it's also a fun little additive to give people to work toward something aside from achievements. I guess with the amount of time I play, I'll probably be doomed to the late teens early twenties my whole time playing.

Also, Chas. The only reason I'll disagree with you on medals being time played is because my medal ranking has been progressing rather quickly and I -don't- play a lot. Hell, I went from Gunnery Sargent grade 1 to Gunnery Sargent grade 2 then skipped grade 3 and 4 to put me -nearly- at LT grade 2 yesterday. I played 14 matches all day long. I think it has to do with how much of a beast you are. I skipped all of those grades as I was easily tearing up the other people gettin' 20+ kills with the next highest up usually around 9 or 11 (with one exception). That was only about 4 or 5 matches and I lost one of them to a Ghost camper by 4.

Don't get me wrong though fellas. I think it's hella fun to climb the medal ladder but in no way do I think either of them are -true skill- rankings as much as time played and how big of a killer you are -some of the time-.

Anyway, now that I've spent more time with it and realized little to none of the easy mode is turned on, like in Halo 2 (so I don't feel shamed playin' an easy game), I gotta say this game is an A+ and it'll stay in my collection long after UT3 hits the shelves, probably.

Im a grade 1 captain, about to hit 40 in double team and team slayer. Will that jump my medal grade any?

Anyone else notice how you don't have to lead your target with the snipe if they're running? That's awesome. The only other game that I know that precise is F.E.A.R. with the ASP and Particle Rifle.

most people, based on how well they play, skip all grade 3's and 4's, i have yet to see a grade 3 or 4 myself. ive skipped many ranks also based on how well i played. i believe i have a career positive of over 600 which is a 1.2 in ranked games,
and a 1600 positive in social for a 1.7. ive skipped many ranks, i went straight from major to commander, no grade 2. and im doing the same from commander to brigaider once i reach level 40.
but as for XP, a 20 kill spread earns you 2 EXP based on skill and what the levels of people your playing are, an average game will only earn you one xp and thats only on victory, so the more games you play and the better you play them the faster youll rank, but on average getting that 2 XP hike is rare, and its usually only 1 youl get.

i love how sniper is more about accuracy now than latency, and no more auto-aim to screw me up when im aiming at someone and another person runs by. took a little bit to adjust and rid myself of the habit of sweep sniping, but im loving that sniper rifle now. i got a triple on some guys at the very beginning of a match. My main tool of destruction in socials is my near 700 sniper kills. but only 200 in ranked as i get more serious there and prefer not to snipe, instead im mostly beat downs, AR and shotty.
Halo 3 is a much different skill ballpark than halo 2, i have to admit. you actually need some skill now, and im glad i have the team mates i do...because ive played with some horrible players.

Dont you feel like a sally playing noobs in social? <,<

I mean...I tried one game of social slayer because I had some new friends that have never played. And I went 41-1. Thats when I stopped playing social lol.

On a side note: ding 39 in team slayer and 40 in double team.

i got friends who are not ranked as high as me, or do not like the stress of ranked matches sometimes.
we just goof around in social matches alot, besides, you get exp there too so i dont mind!

Last time I played a social match I opened up with a Triple Kill with the Sniper on Zhong Mai, Zhong Mai (2), Zhong Mai (3). I would have at least thought SOMEBODY in the room would have said, "HAI GUYZ WATCH SNIPEZ LULZ!" I haven't played social games since I got used to everything, I'd love to go back now XD

You can still sweep snipe, I do it all the time paired with a quick scope. I'm not sure how it worked in Halo 2 but normal FPS sweep sniping works and does the usual "trick the game into helpin' you" quick scope.

As far as finding good, steady teammates... It's a challenge for me. I don't have many RL friends with a 360 (mostly all PC FPS gamers and party people). So the next best thing is people I've met over Xbox and FFXI. I play with Dragoth and he's pretty good but me and him can't hold a win down if everyone else is flyin' off the hatch dyin' to stupid shit like post death nades, runnin' straight onto the other team frontside, etc. We've been lucky here lately with finding two others to team up with us after a match or so but man, I'd kill for a steady team that plays and practices together solidly. Normally after we get our two pick up players we go on a streak then everything starts goin' to shit after about an hour and a half or two hours. The two usually end up running their own agenda like they've just gotten comfortable with us and said, "fuck it."

Strid add me too your friends list. I need a steady group also. Ive been playin with a guy I met about a week ago, we pretty much win any double team match. But if we get you and one other, we could do team slayer to 50.

Lol Im 40 in Lone wolf can't wait to see some pros in high 40's

I'll do it as soon as I get comfortable with the game again in a few days. I upped my sensitivity pretty high, 1 to 7, and it's goin' to take a bit to get used to. I only did so-so today and I wont be able to play much tomorrow but by Monday I'm hopin' to be used to it.

i was at a 9 but my controller F'd up and wont work with my mic now, so i had to down to a 5 just because the controller im using now is kinda new and the joy sticks have not worked down to the smoothness i like yet
