Official Ps3 Pricing Info!

While i agree with pretty much all you said kotsu i disagree with two parts. The first is that people are willing to pay that price. Frankly for the cost of a PS3 i could get a WII and a 360 (hell maybe even a few accessories too). Also they would have to do somethinf quite spectacular to make the 360's graphics look bad, so therefore people will probably buy the wii and the 360, then you have your cool little console and your beefy graphics machine.

Also from what i understand sony does little in the way of showing how much better their console is and more claiming its better.

My money is on the WII as a dark horse, because of its originality and some clever ploys to get people to buy consoles. The main one being complete backwards compatability. I'm sure you could find plenty of people who would pay for a box which will let them play mario kart, perfect dark, goldeneye or super mario 3 (i believe it was recently voted the best game of all time). So when you throw an interesting controller, internet gaming and innovative games into the mix...

Although i will be honest i will probably get the PS3 just for FF...bastards.

FF, MGS, Resistance, VF5, among other games will be reasons why I'm getting a ps3, and personally I thought it'd end up more, also the fact Sony is still losing a shitload of money even at that cost of the consoles, I'm suprised the premium isn't more than 599 :P I'll get a Wii just for Zelda, since that's the only game I still buy Nintendo consoles for, as for 360, doubt I'll ever pick 1 up.

I hear a rumor that only the $599 version will have a HDMI port.

Edit: This is the price I thought it was going to be. My money is already saved. :D

I'd seen the same thing mentioned elsewhere, FWIW.

That should help whomever needs to be educated.

Simple fact is, the technology in the PS3 is more advanced than anything that's ever come out for Gaming Consoles. It, in turn, costs more.

...

...you have time to get a part-time job.

$600 is too much for a game console, period. I've been playing video games for probably 25 of my 29 years at this point and I can't justify spending what works out to be half a month's mortgage payment on one game console with nothing else.

They're artifically building themselves a platform for Blu-Ray media content, knowing that people will want to play the games and will buy the game console no matter what. That then translates to their pitch to get media owners to release their movies and what have you on Blu-Ray and pay Sony alone the licensing fee, rather than the consortia effort behind HD-DVD.

If they just built a dedicated game machine, instead of something approaching an all-encompassing media machine, that price would not be as high. I'm sure it'll be a great Blu-Ray player when it comes out - just know that's what you're buying.

I own 360, and plan to buy both PS3 and Wii. I mean, I gotta be honest. At some point people will break down and buy the PS3. I know everyone here at my office either has reserved one or plans to pick one up already.

Heh Tauro, you know you're gonna be gettin a PS3 anyways, it has MGS4 and you can't stay away, now not necessarily at launch, but you'll get 1 one way or another :P As for 600 being too much, no it isn't, I was contemplating spending 800 if need be for future FF's among other games I'd be interested in, and I'm glad I won't have too. Sure I'll be saving up the 6months up until launch, but that's only 100 a month I'm saving, that isn't that bad.

It's still a toy no matter which way you look at it. You guys are freakin out about a $599 price point, I'm probably looking closer to $700-$800 canadian. That's just stupid.

And I also consider an upgraded pc a toy, I've considered buying a newer 1, but if I did it'd be more than 600, and considering I'm not a big pc person, I'd rather spend the money on a ps3, since it'd get more use from me than a newer pc would.

You may consider a PC a toy, I use it as a tool to work and fun on the side. Fact is a PC has more than 1 purpose, a PS3 ultimately is for gaming. $700-$800 price point is just stupid.

Pricing

Already been saving up and plan on getting more than one (one for ebay). That way i can at least get some of my money back.

The way I look at it is like this.

The premium 360 was $400. Let's try to get it to do the things that the PS3 can do... Add to it the ability to play HD-DVD's. You are going to have to buy a usb add on and you're fooling yourself if you think the addon will be under $150. So that alone pushes the price to at least $550 plus you miss out on the wifi and the HDMI outputs. (hdmi isn't of concern to most since many people don't have 1080p capable televisions and most game will not run at a resolution of 1080p) Hell most games will not take advantage of the storage capacity of Bluray simply because games will be developed for the "lowest" media format because the majority of games will be ported. So while Bluray might have 50GB of storage don't expect things to get bigger than what a dual layered DVD can store. Only the system exclusive titles might utilize the extra storage.

Now the difference between the $499 and the $599 PS3 isn't just the 40GB of extra hard drive space. It also includes Wifi, HDMI connectivity, and the ability to use memory sticks and such. The PS3 makes sense to me because I am an early adopter of technology. A stand alone Bluray player will run $800-1000 when they are first released. A PS3 will run me less, and play games. Win win. Now I could take a risk and buy a stand alone player at a higher cost and then the media format bombs and I'm stuck with a player that has no movies. Or I can buy a PS3 and if the media fails I'll still have a kickass videogame system. Luckily I am a person that is debt free, has a decent paying job, and just has basic bills. While this price point might not be the best for the majority of gamers (time will tell if there are plenty of units left dusty on the selves or not) it is fine with me.

I'll be grabbing a Wii as well. Nothing can replace my need for Metroid, Zelda, and Mario Kart.

I do think it's pretty weak that they stole Nintendo's controller functionality. It seems it was just slapped on last minute and probably won't work as well as Nintendos.

From nintendos E3 it looks like the controller stealing might come back and bite them in the ass.

Nintendo have managed to have a motion sensor and rumble feature whereas sony has only managed the motion sensor (and i would give good odds that it won't work well).

I really want a freaking Wii!

I will probably buy a PS3 when it lowers to like $300 or something. Just for FF.

$600 is going to be cheap for a blue ray player too. Same thing that happened when ps2 started as a dvd player. A ps2 was a cheaper dvd player than most on the market. Most blue ray players will be $1,000+ at release. You can't buy a gaming pc that will have graphics like the ps3 for $600 (although I wish I could). Looks like the consoles are going completly different directioins. Ps3 for the hardcore gamers, wii for the casual, and xbox360 for the inbetween.

That comes to one bazgillion dollars in Canadian btw. ;)
Actually our dollar's been pretty pimp lately (92¢ last I heard), so that actually only comes to one zillion dollars. SWEET!

I thought HDMI was being enforced by copyright protection affiliates, and all future consoles / devices were mandated to have HDMI by design. Is this true?

For those who are wondering why the PS3 is costing so much, thank IBM and the Cell processor. Their fab plants for Cell have been having high failure rates, which heavily raises the cost of manufacturing and as such the cost to their customers (such as Sony).

Then again, thank Sony for being the numbnuts who decided to use Cell. I'll admit it's got huge potential and could be an excellent investment, but leading edge = bleeding edge and Sony may be shooting themselves fiercely with that decision.

Wii won't be above $200. They are aiming for $100.

there's no way it'll be THAT cheap. I'd expect more around $300 (still cheaper than the others). But if they do make it lower, good for them. I'm more excited what they announced for the PSP where you can play PSOne games on it soon :3

I giggled like a schoolgirl when I read the PS3's price. No way I'm picking that thing up at launch. I'll wait and wait and wait, although I'm sure I'll buy one eventually. Wii is being bought at launch.

They implement that for the PSP in a way that doesn't totally suck and i would consider using it again. <3 FFVIII!

screw FFVIII!!! D: :P Metal Gear Solid wheeeee :3 maybe I'll finally finish FF9 too during a class XD

Does anyone know how they are being implemented? as some of those FF games are pretty large and i can't see them being downloaded over the PSP (hell connecting to google is a mission).

One thing that I am hopeful for is that with the extra storage on the disks, and the fact that all games are supposedly going to be region free that Japanese developers start adding english subtitles to games (I don't need english voice acting) and I could get games 6 months to a year earlier that way. :D
